Diploma of business – where can it get you?

Stay smart. Stay keen. Stay focused. Get a diploma of business and challenge yourself to achieve more. This month we are talking about success. What it is that makes someone successful? And how do we become successful in our chosen fields?

In our last post we touched on personality traits and how our attitude and work ethic in particular can determine the level of our success. But I wanted to take a closer look at the world of business and how to succeed in this ever changing/competitive sector.

If you’re looking at studying a diploma of business, but are still weighing up your options, this may resonate with you. Below are three basic steps to give you a head start in whichever field of business you choose.

Step 1 Stay Smart:

You need to remain current in the market. Educate yourself, read business journals (such as BRW or Financial Review) and keep yourself up to date with trends and changes within the industry. Look into the digital changes that are occurring and learn the technology and terminology you need to be using. The more you know the more chance you have of succeeding. Remember knowledge is power. A great starting point is to complete a diploma of business and set yourself up with foundational skills in:

  1. • Critical thinking
  2. • Data analysis
  3. • Communication
  4. • Administration
  5. • Market research

Each of these skills is seen as a valuable asset to any future employer.

Step 2 Stay keen:

To give yourself a competitive edge you need to make yourself indispensable. If it’s a new job you are starting, study the position. Come early and leave late. Take extra training if you need to. Become an expert in the company’s soft ware. Do whatever it takes to stand out. Business is not for the faint hearted. In the early years you need to put in the time and effort to reap the rewards. But again if you can see the bigger picture and remain optimistic, you’re more likely to enjoy what you do and succeed.

Step Stay focused:

The biggest pitfall people face when entering the business industry is failure. People are afraid to fail, which limits their potential to achieve greatness. Failure is ok. No one wants to fail, but it happens. It’s how you recover from failure that counts. Take Richard Branson for example.

Richard Branson has experience many failures, several of them being very public companies that never made it off the ground. But he never let them define him. He is renowned for saying “do not be embarrassed by your failures, learn from them and start again.” The fear of failure can cripple us. We need to have an attitude of winners! Challenge yourself and work hard for what you want. And so what if you don’t secure your dream position first go? Stay focused and remember why you started in the first place.
