Athletes To Train Others

Announcement posted by Spherion 04 Apr 2001

At a time where some athletes are struggling to find work after the Sydney 2000 Olympic Games, others have been able to turn their Olympic success into financial reward. Bo Hanson, triple Olympic rower and dual Olympic Bronze
medallist, is just one example of an Olympian who has harnessed his experience and used it to his advantage.

While winding down his training after successfully competing in the international event last October, Bo felt it would be a good time to look into career options in fields other than sport.

With the support of the New South Wales Institute of Sport and Spherion (formerly Interim Technology), a leading provider of IT and business education, recruitment, outsourcing and technology solutions, Bo has now joined Spherion as a corporate trainer.

As one of the first athletes to be part of the new training program, Bo said it can be difficult working full time and pursuing a sports career.
"Spherion has been fantastic because they have offered me the flexibility to work around my sports training schedule," he said.

At Spherion, Bo is currently completing his Certificate IV in Workplace Training and Assessment. This is an internationally recognised and essential qualification for corporate trainers.

Bo started as a Spherion trainer this month which involves teaching others study skills, workplace skills and employment skills. He also teaches students in self management which includes time management, goal setting, team work and communication.

"I really enjoy teaching others how to set goals and work hard to achieve them. It's very fulfilling to see students get something out of this type of training and enhance their own performance," he said.

Mr Mike Clugston, Managing Director of Education, Spherion, said this new initiative has proved to be a win-win arrangement. "Throughout our long standing partnership with NSWIS, Spherion has recognised how highly
dedicated and motivated the athletes really are. So we are now very pleased to extend our support by not only providing these athletes with additional skills but inviting them to join our company as trainers which is proving to
be successful for both the athletes and our students," he said.

"For the athletes, they can tap into all the great skills they have developed through their sports training including goal setting, team building and time management skills, all very important when training others," Mr Clugston said.

"For our students, having NSWIS athletes as trainers has created a very positive experience. Our students can hear and learn first hand how these elite athletes have gained their skills from both their sports training and through their association with Spherion," he concluded.

Mr Michael Scott, Director of NSWIS, said the Institute was very pleased with its ongoing relationship with Spherion. "We are committed to opening up opportunities for our athletes in areas other than sport. Our experience
in supporting elite athletes has shown that athletes who have something else in their lives besides their sport actually perform better. This is the NSWIS philosophy, which is supported by Spherion," he said.

Other NSWIS athletes who have trained with Spherion include Tom Laurich, Jason Day, Peter Hardcastle, Danielle Lindsay, Alyson Annan and Jane Jamieson.
