IT’S VINE O’CLOCK: TIME FOR A SIX SECOND SHORT FILM

Announcement posted by Tropfest 01 Jul 2015

Tropfest and Twitter present #TROPVINE [ultra] short filmmaking competition

Dachshunds. Weekends. Tyrion Lannister. Three things that are short, but awesome. Joining them is #TROPVINE: the short filmmaking competition where films can be no more than six seconds long. #TROPVINE is the lovechild of TropfestAustralia and Twitter’s short video app, Vine, and entrants from around the globe are invited to submit their Vine films now!

Entrants need to make an original Vine film, using this year’s TSI (Tropfest Signature Item) ‘CARD’, and Tweet it to @TROPFESTusing the competition hashtags #tropvine and #card. The winner will take home acash prize of $5,000 AUD, a Nikon 1 V3 Kit with a 10-30mm lens, one year of Spotify premium PLUS a VIP trip to Sydney for Tropfest Australia 2015 this December, including Qantas flights to Sydney and accommodation at hip designer hotel QT Sydney.

Last year’s winner, Tee Ken Ng (@teekenng) says winning #TROPVINE 2014 created opportunities in the filmmaking industry that would have otherwise been impossible. “My winning #TROPVINE entry, Mirror Copy, went on to be nominated for a Shorty Award, up against Michelle Obama’s, for ‘Vine of the Year’ in New York. Flying over to attend the ceremony was an invaluable opportunity to finally meet in person many talented video creators who I knew through the platform. Whilst there I also met with the people at Vine HQ and was invited into Mashable for a fun Vine duel!”

Ken (@teekenng) offers up these three tips for entrants:

1. Check out what other people are doing on there and get inspired

2. Don’t be daunted if you spend hours making a single Vine!

3. Get a simple tripod if you’re planning to do stop-motion

Michael Laverty, Tropfest Managing Director said “Tropfest and Twitter have partnered to create #TROPVINE - championing creative short filmmaking across the globe. It’s fun and creative filmmaking and we love seeing how the Tropfest Signature Item is interpreted in ultra-short form!”

Jennie Sager, Music, Entertainment, and Events Partnerships Manager Twitter Australia said"Vine creators are a community of some of the most creative minds in the world, and we wanted to create an opportunity to showcase their talents. In line with the Twitter ethos that constraint inspires creativity, we thought it would be amazing to partner with Tropfest, the world's largest short film festival, to create an even shorter film festival and #TROPVINE was born. We were blown away by the quality of the entries we received during the inaugural #TROPVINE in 2014 and we can't wait to see what Vine creators in Australia and around the world wow us with this year”

The 2015 finalists will be screened live at the #TROPVINE Festival Night at The X Studio in Sydney on 12 August, with the winner announced at the end of the night. Finalists will be able to mingle with social-media mega-dude Jason Mante, Head of User Experience for Vine. That’s a pretty big deal.

About Tropfest

Tropfest is Australia’s most prestigious short film festival and one of its most iconic cultural events. It is also the largest short film festival in the world. Founded in 1993 by film director John Polson as a small screening for family and friends at Sydney’s Tropicana Café, the Festival now attracts a national event audience of around 150,000 people. The event is hosted in Sydney with a live national broadcast on SBS 2. The short film competition is unique in that every film must be made specifically for Tropfest, will premiere at Tropfest Australia and include the Tropfest Signature Item (TSI), which changes each year. 16 Finalists are selected from an average 650 entries. Tropfest has expanded internationally to include festivals in North America, (New York), the Middle East, New Zealand and South East Asia.
