Mushrooms provide 100% daily vitamin D according to new data published by Food Standards ANZ
Food Standards Australia New Zealand (FSANZ) has published new data around vitamin D levels in food, on the government website:
http://www.foodstandards.gov.au/science/monitoringnutrients/nutrientables/Pages/Data-provided-by-food-companies-and-organisations.aspx
The new data published by FSANZ show Mushrooms, like people, absorb vitamin d and we can achieve our daily intake just by eating them. In fact, they are the ONLY food to provide 100 per cent of the vitamin D you need in just one serve (three mushrooms + 1hr of sunlight).
"As we approach the middle of winter, now is the time to be increasing vitamin D rich foods. These findings are extremely timely as one in two Aussies will be deciecient in vitamin D by the end of next month," says Acredited Practicing Dietitian, Glenn Carwell.
APD Glenn Cardwell is available for interview, to discuss:
- The new figures from the National Measurement Institute
- One serve of store-bought mushrooms can provide 20 per cent of an adult’s daily vitamin D needs
- One serve of mushrooms left in the sun for an hour, as well as ‘vitamin D’ labelled mushrooms, will provide more than 100 per cent of your daily vitamin D needs
- More than four in five (84%) Australians don’t know they can achieve vitamin D through food they eat and many aren’t aware of the health risks associated with low vitamin D levels
- Who is most as risk of a dificiency: Women, 18-34 year olds, those who live in southern parts of Australia, city dwellers
