GetUp members welcome taxation rule book tidy up

Announcement posted by GetUp! 24 Jul 2015

GetUp’s acting national director Paul Oosting said Labor’s announcement supporting a ’Buffett Rule’ to close loopholes for the wealthiest one per cent would start to bring fairplay back into Australia’s tax system.

“Bringing in the same rule book for all Australians is a good first step to evening out the playing field,” he said.

“Tax loopholes have been used as an unfair advantage for a select few unscrupulous members of the wealthiest one per cent. Now, it looks like they might have to start playing the same version of the game as everyone else.”

“By getting the one per cent to start playing properly, we’ll have revenue to invest in our schools, hospitals and universities and create future opportunities for all.”

“For GetUp members, this announcement signals a big win in the ongoing campaign to tidy up the taxation rule book. In the last week alone, seven thousand GetUp members contacted their Labor MPs asking them to back a Buffett Rule whilst attending the ALP National Conference. Meanwhile a petition started earlier this year that calls for a Buffett Rule has gained 64,000 signatures.”

“A policy report by GetUp released earlier this year with The Australia Institute found that closing tax loopholes for the wealthiest one per cent who earn over $300,000 per annum could generate $2.5 billion a year in revenue.”
