Creating Incredible Little Communicators

An 8 week program for parents designed by a Speech Pathologist

With parents’ hectic lives these days, there is a constant challenge to be a “good parent” or to do all the “right things” for their children. A foundational skill for children is communication, however parents (and society in general) just don’t have the training or know-how to be able to improve their child’s speech and language skills. This is where The SpeeL’s latest program – Incredible Little Communicators – is meeting this gap. It is an eight week program developed by a Speech Pathologist and tailored to the environment and needs of the family to create parents who are equipped with useful strategies to give their child the opportunities to develop their communication skills.

With these startling statistics regularly coming through in Speech Pathology Research, it is easy to see why we need to give parents the knowledge and the tools to be able to improve their child’s speech and language skills at home. This, coupled with extremely long waiting lists for Speech Pathology, results in anxious parents, worried teachers, and children who find communication frustrating!

At the beginning of the program, parents will complete a comprehensive survey to provide information about their home environment and family lifestyle. This will enable the Speech Pathologist to tailor the five activities for the week. There are so many outcomes to the program, but here are the four key outcomes:

·       Parents are taught 27 strategies and skills regularly used by Speech Pathologists with kids

·       Children work on a total of 35 skills within 40 activities

·       Children feel safe and supported in their communication skills

·       Concerns are identified early
