Viticultural Society of Victoria - the Legacy Lives on

Announcement posted by Wingara Wine Group 30 Sep 2015

Seville Estate winemaker awarded.

The Viticultural Society of Victoria (The Society) was founded in 1905 as the leading Wine Advocacy Organisation in Victoria. Over a considerable period of time, the Society has contributed significantly to the Victorian Wine Industry and more recently, to the Wine Show program.  As part of its ongoing commitment to the wine industry, The Society has instigated a Legacy Project, to ensure its contribution continues in a sustainable and practical manner.

As part of the Legacy Project, The Society today announces its annual sponsorship of an Associate Judge at the Victorian Wine Show, which was first held in 1981.  The purpose of this sponsorship is to continue promoting the Victorian Wine Industry and to assist with the professional development of future Wine Show judges.

The inaugural beneficiary of this sponsorship is Dylan McMahon, winemaker for Seville Estate in Victoria’s Yarra Valley and grandson of the late Dr. Peter McMahon, who founded Seville Estate and was also a long term member of The Society.

The Sponsorship will include the following benefits:

1.      *A cash component to cover Dylan’s travel, meals and accommodation during his tenure as Associate Judge from 26-28 October 2015,

2.      *Invitations to monthly meetings of The Society, which include an extensive tasting of rare and cellared wine and

3.      *Mentoring from Grape Growers, Winemakers and Wine marketers who are members of The Society.

Victorian Wines Show director Robert Paul congratulates The Society on this initiative and welcomes Dylan to the 2015 judging panel. “Besides having a significant family pedigree, Dylan has quickly established a reputation as an outstanding Victorian winemaker and I am sure both he and the wine show will benefit from his appointment” said Mr Paul.

Dylan McMahon said of his award, “It is a great honour to be sponsored by such a long-standing and highly recognised organisation that is the Victorian Viticultural Society of which my grandfather was a member. I look forward to opportunity to expand my knowledge from the experience of some of the industry’s leading members.”

The Sponsorship commences from the Victorian Wine Show in October 2015 and continues for twelve-months.

About Dylan McMahon.

Dylan McMahon was on track to become an electrical engineer until he decided to follow his heritage and destiny… and make wine instead. His grandfather Dr. Peter McMahon planted the first vines at Seville Estate in Victoria’s Yarra Valley in 1970. Dylan spent his first 5 years working under  previous winemakers Alistair Butt and Iain Riggs and stepped up to the role of Seville Estate winemaker in 2004.   Dylan feels fortunate to have travelled in his early career to work 2002 vintage at Hugel & Fils and 2003 at Domaine Paul Blanck in France’s Alsace region.

Dylan graduated from Charles Sturt in Wagga with a bachelor of Wine Science in 2006.  In 2012, he was a finalist in the Wine Society’s “Young Gun Winemaker” award.

Peter McMahon has undoubtedly been a major influence on Dylan’s chosen career, “My grandfather retired in 1996. I’ve learnt from him that while concentration is important in wine, elegance and finesse are the keys.”
