Sydney, October 1, 2015 – CarAdvice.com.au, Australia’s leading independent publisher of automotive content, is celebrating October 2 as ‘National Name Your Car Day’ after a recent survey showed that 94% of Australians have named their favourite car.

Already a date on the US calendar, Name Your Car day has been growing in popularity over the past 15 years and is a four-wheeled nod to the centuries-old tradition of naming ships and boats.

Made more famous by pop-culture icons Herbie the Love Bug and Bumblebee the transforming Camaro, Name Your Car Day is a fun celebration of cars and car-culture.

CarAdvice conducted a local survey to reveal Aussies’ relationship with their car and, with cars in the spotlight more than ever before, the findings show it’s a resounding love affair.

Whether there is a strong emotional connection to the car or just an amusing nickname born from its number plate, naming our cars is an integral part of Australian car culture.

Brand name, colour and power were three main sources of inspiration with monikers such as ‘White Lightning’ and ‘Red Rocket’ featuring heavily. Outright favourite name honours falls to ‘Beast’, a name made more famous by Australian actor Eric Bana and his red 1974 XB Ford Falcon coupe, and the documentary “Love the Beast”.

Beyond the obvious alliteration and rhymes (Rhonda the Honda, Terry the Territory), is a trend of light-hearted humour stemming from celebrity names and pop-culture references with 15% of Aussies naming their car after a celebrity, notably Taylor Swift, Tom the Cruze, Ron the burgundy Commodore and Neil Patrick Yaris.

Another 5% named their car after the registration plate, but 40% of Aussies choose more personalised names for their cars, ranging from their childhood sweetheart to a personality trait of the car.

The CarAdvice survey also found we spend more time and care on our cars than we do our mobile phone, siblings, and pets – in that order.
Name your Car Day celebrates our love affair with our cars and this year CarAdvice is encouraging people to Tweet or Instagram their funny car names and pictures with the hashtags #NameYourCarDay and #CarAdvice for the chance to win fuel vouchers.

“We wanted to celebrate our four-wheeled companions and acknowledge the role they play in Australian culture. For many people, cars are almost a member of the family, and they’re definitely an extension of our personality – and that personality needs a name,” said James Ward, Associate Publisher, CarAdvice.

This year on October 2, we’re celebrating Name Your Car day in Australia to recognise the vehicles that connect our world and our lives. Not least given there’s now a long weekend in most states and territories when people typically jump in the car and head out of town. We invite people to send a picture of their car and tell us the story of how they named it.”

To enter:
1. Upload a photo of your car to Twitter or Instagram
2. Tell us the name of your car
3. Make sure you include the hashtags #NameYourCarDay and  #CarAdvice
The two favourite entries voted by the CarAdvice team will each win a $500 petrol voucher. Visit nameyourcarday.com.au for more information and to see other entries.
