Victorian Government’s new energy efficiency targets mean new savings for homeowners this summer

Announcement posted by Energy Makeovers 11 Nov 2015

Melbourne, 11 November 2015: The Victorian Government's decision to increase the Victorian Energy Efficiency Target, currently being passed through State Parliament, means there’s never been a better time for Victorians to take advantage of the various schemes underwritten by the government, and to save money on their power and lighting bills.

The Victorian Energy Efficiency Target (VEET) scheme now before parliament for amendment to increase targets encourages investment in energy-efficient technology. One such technology is LED lights, and Energy Makeovers continues to upgrade households in metropolitan Melbourne at the rate of over 100 per day.

According to Energy Makeovers Managing Director Bryn Dellar, “The upside for Victorians is huge, and this decision by the government continues their clear leadership in sustainable technology.”

The company is now expanding its LED upgrade program for the summer.

“For homeowners in Victoria, it’s great news, and the summer is a perfect time to upgrade. You can get solar panels on your roof to save on power bills during the day, and upgrade your heat-generating halogens to efficient LED lights to save energy and keep your house cooler at night.

“There are about two million households in Victoria, and we have upgraded the LEDs in about 14,500 of them. Those homeowners who have made the switch see reductions in their lighting bills of up to 85%, and the upgrade itself is free, underwritten by the government’s VEET scheme.

“This new legislation creates certainty for Victorians. Householders know they can plan to upgrade at no cost, and reap the benefits of more-efficient lighting that runs cooler than halogens and lasts much longer. It’s a win for householders, the government and the environment.”

Energy Makeovers is a strong ambassador for sustainable energy alternatives that deliver real cost-saving to consumers. The company was an advocate against proposals under the previous Napthine-led Coalition to axe the VEET scheme if re-elected in 2014, and has consistently supported the continuation of the VEET scheme until 2029 to create benchmarks for sustainable alternatives that are meaningful and affordable to consumers without political ideology.

Mark Wakeham, CEO of Environment Victoria, said, “Like Environment Victoria, Energy Makeovers has championed the Victorian Energy Efficiency Target for over six years. In that time they have been one of the most active providers of a range of products and services, helping nearly 300,000 households and businesses reduce their carbon footprints. Through educating their customers and providing easy access to energy-saving improvements like replacing energy guzzling halogen lamps, they have reduced carbon emissions by over 2.5 million tonnes and saved Victorians millions of dollars in power bills. We’re very happy to partner with Energy Makeovers to provide our 72,000 supporters with another action they can take to go zero emissions.”
