Fremantle Door & Window Company Reminds Perth: “If You Don’t Have a Bushfire Plan, Create One Now.”

Announcement posted by Fremantle Door And Window 16 Nov 2015

Creator and installer of custom built doors and windows in Perth reveals why it is so important to have a bushfire plan.
Perth, WA, 16 November 2015 - Recently, a poll conducted in Perth and the South West Land Division of WA by the Department of Fire and Emergency Services (DFES) indicated that less than half of the people polled knew what they should do if a bushfire happens in their area. A shocking 74% admitted that they do not have an emergency or evacuation plan in case of a bushfire. 61% of those knew they were at risk and still didn’t have a plan.

According to Steve Fewster, who is the DFES Deputy Commissioner, “Western Australia is one of the most bushfire prone areas in the world.” Mr Fewster encourages all WA residents who don’t have a bushfire emergency plan to form one immediately.

Tish Thompson is the office administrator for Fremantle Door & Window Company. She and everyone at Fremantle Door & Window are concerned that so many people would be without a plan in the face of the possibility of dire consequences. According to Ms Thompson:

“We know how devastating bushfires can be and we want everyone to be safe. We decided to use our blog as a public reminder for those who don’t yet have a bushfire plan. We know that a lot of people think they can stay home and protect their property, but one water hose against the fury of nature is never a fair fight. That is why we have made this issue personal.”

The DFES has recommendations for crafting a bushfire emergency plan. The first recommendation is to have a plan. Those who don’t have a plan are encouraged to write one down immediately and learn it with their families. It is suggested that the plan also includes firm “triggers” for when it is time to evacuate.

While staying home to fight the fire is never recommended, DFES does have recommendations for making one’s property unfriendly to bushfires. This includes making sure all trees are pruned back and long grass is cut short. Roof gutters should be clear of debris and all garbage or debris should be removed from the yard.

An emergency kit is a crucial part of a bushfire survival strategy. The kit should include a first aid kit, non-perishable food, water, a woolen blanket, a torch and a battery operated radio. When evacuating, DFES reminds residents to remember their mobile phone and charger, important documents, car keys and house keys.

They recommend closing all doors and windows during a bushfire and turning off the air conditioning. It is helpful to leave a small amount of water running through the pipes to keep them from conducting excess heat and causing the inside of the home to catch fire.

Ms Thompson concludes: “You can replace your home and your belongings, but you can’t replace you or your family if you are killed in a bushfire. Create a bushfire evacuation plan and stick to it.”
