Choosing Colour For Your Home At Any Age

Announcement posted by Sherwin-Williams 17 Nov 2015

As you grow and mature over time, your personal style and wardrobe choices change —shouldn’t the same hold true for your home décor? The colours you choose for your home in your twenties may vary from those you choose in your forties and fifties, but the basics behind creating a harmonious look do not. The colour experts at Sherwin-Williams, one of the world’s leading paint brands, know this. That’s why Sherwin-Williams’ curated ‘Home Colour Collections’ make choosing colours that work together easy at any stage of your life.

Each of the 16 colour collections takes inspiration from current trends forecasted by the experts at Sherwin-Williams and has been assembled to appeal to a variety of tastes, whether you are a decorating your first home or the home in which you’re planning to retire. Even more, the colour collections each contain a palette of 20 colours, designed to work perfectly throughout the home, providing a fool-proof approach to colour selection.

Making bold colour work:

The Fashion Forward colour collection takes its cues from couture—an animal print chair, a funky pair of shoes or your favourite accessories. This head-turning look is cosmopolitan, glamorous and daring, perfect for younger adults who want a pop of their favourite colour splashed across their walls.  Clean whites complement cooler neutrals and daring colours like Organic Green SWAU 1263 and Hibiscus SWAU 6851 for a fun, youthful look.

For a mature homeowner with an established style that wants to add bold colour to their home in a more sophisticated way, the Colour Pizzazz collection adds spice with neutrals and warmer colours like Emberglow SWAU 1104. The palette has a slightly Latin edge to it, perhaps reminiscent of an exotic adventure you once had, and gives off a worldly energy that’s inviting and liveable.

Creating a harmonious interior:

Colours match perfectly when you achieve visual harmony—the balance between colour, materials, furnishings and décor that merge together to create a beautiful interior space. Susan Wadden, Colour Marketing & Design Manager, Sherwin-Williams Diversified Brands, gives her top tips for creating a harmony in the home:

  • The inspiration piece:  Sources of inspiration, like a patterned throw pillow, favourite scarf and even a magazine photo, are a great place to start and can influence the look of an entire room.  Once a source of inspiration is identified, start to pull colours and other design elements, like texture and pattern, from these pieces to develop a cohesive look around them.
  • Theme: Often designers set a thematic design plan for a room—for example a collection of vinyl records could contribute to a vintage-themed living room. Serene, exotic, comfortable, contemporary are just a few descriptors that can be used to define a room. A specific mood is created with choice in colors, furniture, accessories and the amount of texture and pattern you choose to incorporate.
  • Colour cues:  Colour should always support the theme you choose for your space. Whatever the inspiration or theme, an odd number of colours typically creates the most eye-pleasing aesthetic.  It’s best to choose three colours for a room:  a dominant colour used for walls, a secondary colour, found throughout the room in fabrics and accessories and an accent colour, used to give pops of energy and excitement to the space.  To create a cohesive look that flows from room to room throughout the home, choose five to seven colours from any of the 16 Sherwin-Williams colour collections.
