In a major win for the Australian startup community, Melbourne-based healthtech startup, CareMonkey, won the grand prize of €650,000 in the Slush 2015 Pitching competition. The near $1 million AUD, which was sponsored by Evli Bank, FiBAN business angels and private investors, is the largest prize offered at a startup pitching competition, globally. The prize was awarded in Helsinki on the main stage of the sold-out 15,000 person Slush 2015 event. The judges agreed that the “Facebook of health and safety” had the easiest to understand value proposition, beating out 1000 global competitors to take home the prize money.

Founded in 2011, CareMonkey has created a health, safety and productivity solution for families, schools, clubs, businesses, community service organisations and other groups with a duty of care, namely CareMonkey’s replacement of paper-based permission and care-giving forms. CareMonkey has over 100,000 users and counts the NRL, Touch Football Australia and Basketball Victoria amongst its  enterprise customers. The company is also making inroads into schools with 25% of Victorian Catholic Schools using the service.

Troy Westley, CareMonkey CEO, states: “We are absolutely thrilled to have won! This prize is a validation for the whole team that we are working on a product that has real potential to grow, and help many more organisations better manage their duty of care.”

Martin Howell, CareMonkey CTO: “Winning at Slush is a great recognition of the hard work the team has put in over the last four years. We’ve got so many stories of teachers who have used our app during life-threatening incidents to care better for their students, and we will definitely use this award to scale up our operations so that more organisations can adopt CareMonkey. We look forward to taking this to other markets.”

The win tops off a fantastic year for CareMonkey. Apart from winning at Slush, the startup was also recently named the winner of the Talent Unleashed award,  judged by Richard Branson of Virgin, and Steve Wozniak, co-founder of Apple. Branson commented that the company “is certainly one to watch” and Wozniak stated that “the more this is the standard, the better.” The prize includes a trip to Branson’s Necker Island.

About CareMonkey

CareMonkey is a health and safety system that automatically keeps medical and emergency details up to date for any organisation with a duty of care. It makes the details instantly available to authorised carers on their mobile devices in an emergency, so they know who to call, what to do, or what to tell an ambulance paramedic. The process of collecting the information is automated and has automated reminders, making CareMonkey both a productivity solution that saves organisations time as well as a health and safety solution saving time and reducing the chances of medical errors in an emergency.
