The popularity of the Star Wars: The Force Awakens BB-8 from Sphero brings with it a whole new product category to explore.
SYDNEY, AUSTRALIA – November 25, 2015 - MacGear Group, the distributor of choice for mobile accessories, wearables, speaker and connected device brands, has announced another record year with further growth for the company.  Following on from the addition of Sphero, ClamCase , Sonix and Twelve South, the company has seen high demand for its brands allowing for the addition of a new Brand Manager to its staff.

The latest swell of growth has been partially attributed to the increased popularity of the Sphero brand following the release of the Star Wars: The Force Awakens BB-8 toy and the effect it has had on the traditional toy market.

“There has been a shift in the traditional toy category and where they are being sold.” said Simon Cuff, Managing Director at MacGear Group. “Connected devices such as the Sphero BB-8, and in fact the whole interactive Sphero range, open up a new market and opportunity for retailers.”

This is not the first time that MacGear have been able to recognise a change in the market and seize it to grow the company.  Building on the popularity of Apple & Microsoft devices, the company first started in Apple accessories which continue to be its strong foundation with brands like Moshi, UAG, Catalyst and Twelve South. However, it has recently made a large play in Microsoft Surface accessories.

As devices have become more connected, the company has introduced Braven, Adonit and Swiss Mobility, amongst others, to take advantage of the market possibilities.  Now with the radical change in the toy market, it is poised to once again see growth thanks to the inclusion of Sphero in its brand roster.

As a result, MacGear Group is pleased to announce David Vanderkley as its newly appointed Brand Manager.

David brings over 16 years’ experience in consumer retail to MacGear and was previously working for the past year at Gecko Gear as their General Manager and previously as the Accessories Product & Sales Manager at Powermove for 7 years.  David’s experience and relationships with retailers will be a huge asset to the company.

“I am thrilled to be a part of a young, fast growing and dynamic distributor” said David Vanderkley. “Connected toys and devices such as Sphero are a strong growth category for our retailers, together with drones and robotics, and it will be interesting to see how this segment evolves in the coming years”.
