Why I am Happy to Make Money from Domestic Violence

Announcement posted by AKA Virtual PA 04 Jan 2016

Corporates talk money and by meeting them where they are means that we can see real solutions and real lasting change when it comes to domestic violence.

Domestic Violence expert and survivor Lisa McAdams says that it is time to stop being so emotional when it comes to dealing with domestic violence workplace solutions.

“When dealing with issues like domestic violence, the most caring thing to do is leave the emotion aside when looking for workplace solutions to domestic violence.” said Lisa McAdams.

“Domestic violence is costing business millions in lost productivity alone.” she said.

“Domestic violence does not discriminate, key employees in the workplace are effected.”

“It is no longer enough for businesses to tick boxes and play lip service to this issue.”

“Technological Abuse means businesses have to be prepared, the potential impact to them, is real.”

“Businesses who are early adopters of not only policies but training will be ahead of the curve and this is PR gold.”

Ms McAdams said that as far as domestic violence is concerned Pandora’s Box is open and now is the time for businesses to:

  • Look at ways to roll out training for all employees that is non-biased, judgement free and objective.
  • See the competitive advantage of being an early adopter of implementing domestic violence workplace polices and training.
  • Realise that not dealing with the serious issue of domestic violence it is costing them not only in productivity but also company culture.
  • That this is just another policy and training for the suite of social policies. This is not reinventing the wheel.
  • Corporate Australia has an opportunity here to truly make a difference to this issue.

According to the National Council to Reduce Violence Against Women and Their Children, The Cost of Violence Against Women and Their Children (2009). Human Rights Commission

  • In the 2008/09 financial year, the cost of intimate partner violence to the Australian economy overall was estimated to be $13.6 billion.
  • If no preventative action is taken, this cost is projected to rise to $15.6 billion annually by 2021/22.
  • $456 million of this $15.6 billion will be borne by employers and $609 million will be borne in productivity losses.

Ms McAdams said that it is important that this window of opportunity where real a lasting change is possible is not wasted and that business has a huge opportunity to improve their own productivity whilst improving the domestic violence outcomes for many.
