Fremantle Door & Window Implores Australians: Have a Bushfire Plan for Your Family

Announcement posted by Fremantle Door And Window 29 Jan 2016

Creator of custom built doors and windows reveals why it is so important for every family to have a bushfire emergency plan.
Perth, WA, 29 January 2016 - Fremantle Door & Window Company is a firm that creates custom built doors and windows for clients in the Perth area. Once every year, at the beginning of bushfire season, they devote a section of their company blog to the subject of bushfire safety. More specifically, they encourage everyone to make sure they have a bushfire emergency plan.

Bushfire season has seemingly become more and more dangerous with each passing year. Bushfires destroy millions of dollars worth of property and cause too many unnecessary deaths each year. Tish Thompson, Office Administrator of Fremantle Door & Window, stands behind her company’s commitment to keeping their friends, neighbours and clients safe.

According to Ms Thompson: “We cannot stress strongly enough how important it is to have a bushfire emergency plan. We all like to think disaster always strikes somewhere else, but it is important to make sure you have a firm plan in case there is a bushfire in your area. It only takes one evening for a family to get together, make a firm emergency plan and make sure everyone knows what to do. That one evening of work could save lives.”

Elements of a Bushfire Emergency Plan

The first element is to know each bushfire danger rating level and what each one means. A family should have its own action plan for each stage of a bushfire. This includes a firm decision on when it is time to leave.

When leaving one’s home is the only reasonable option, the following should be done: close all doors and windows, fill all sinks with water and turn off the gas supply. It also important to inform contacts about the situation and to wear protective clothing against radiant heat.

While on the road, there are two things that can be done to minimise exposure to radiant heat: park somewhere that has no trees and debris, or stay behind a solid structure.

However, there is one very important reminder Ms Thompson wants to emphasise: “We understand that you want to defend your home, but please keep in mind that your life, as well as the lives of your family members, are more important than your home and possessions. When in doubt, leave your home. But if you choose to stay, make sure to have a home defense plan.”
