Rebel business owner sets out to turn this figure on its head in 2016
WITH Adelaide known as one of the toughest places in the world to start a business, international business owner and author Ian Marsh will begin his national book tour in the city on February 11 to prove a business can be successful in any environment.

The head of Streetsmart Marketing International, whose wife Jenny was born in Adelaide, has written a book called The Inconvenient Truth About Business Success in an effort to turn this statistic on its head.

“It’s shocking that only 7% of businesses ever reach $1 million in turnover,” Mr Marsh said.

“If people are willing to face the inconvenient truth about business success, we would turn this figure on its head. In my environment, that’s exactly what happens.

“We have been teaching these principles at our business workshops since 2000 to over 2500 businesses from all over Australia, New Zealand, Belgium, the UK and US.

“We have helped them face the inconvenient truth about business success and this statistic simply does not apply to our students.”

The four main principles of business success for business owners are having absolute clarity on their goals; accepting full responsibility for the situation they are in and having the courage to turn the situation from where they are currently to where they want to be with a clear plan; taking action on that plan and having a good mentor who is at least five times more successful than they are in the area they are wanting to improve.

Mr Marsh has been in business for 25 years. He mastered sales and marketing early on and built one of the largest air conditioning companies in Australia.

“Because I didn’t know the inconvenient truths about business success in my first large company, I allowed certain staff to have the ability to steal from me without my knowledge, which caused me to go bankrupt in 2006,” he said.

“Although I didn’t realise it at the time, this was the best thing that could have happened to me, because it revealed to me the inconvenient truths about business success and why most business owners do not become millionaires. One of the hardest things I had to do was look my wife in the eye and explain why I could not even put food on the table for my family. By the way, when I lost everything, the only person who ever rang me was my mother.”

Not one to give up (one of the most important  inconvenient truths), in late 2006 he went on to build Marsh Air Marketing, Air Con Direct, Tradesman Profits and Streetsmart Business School.

He currently owns and runs Streetsmart Marketing International and Streetsmart Business School, which turns over about $4 million per annum.
One company he has worked with in Adelaide is Grant Sheds. After acting on Mr Marsh’s advice, the company grew by over 700%. The business now runs itself and the owners, Ali and Danny Halupka, have fantastic work life balance, which they never had before.

“I believe everybody has the ability to become a millionaire if they are willing to face the inconvenient truth about business success,” he said.

“The reason most people are not millionaires is because they fear success and they don’t even realise it.

“Deep down, most people think that real financial success is for other people and that they are not worthy. I’d like to see business owners first take time out to know what is truly possible for them, determine what they actually want in life and take the right actions to make it happen.”

The Inconvenient Truth About Business Success workshop will be held at the Hilton Hotel Adelaide, 233 Victoria Square, from 8.30am to 5pm.
