Perth, WA, 19 February 2016 - Fremantle Door & Window Company has developed a great reputation for creating fine custom doors and windows in the Perth area. They are also building a great reputation for their commitment to using only ethically sourced timber that has been certified by the Malaysian Timber Certification Council (MTCC).

Carbon Footprint and Responsible Forestry

It is certainly not new to anyone who has lived in Australia during this millennium that the Australian climate is changing rapidly. Every summer seems to be hotter and hotter with more and more severe weather events.

Global warming is caused by the release of what are called “greenhouse gases” into the environment. CO2 is one of the best examples of a greenhouse gas, leading to its use as the accepted measurement of how much a process contributes to global warming.

The amount of carbon released into the environment in a process is called the “carbon footprint.” When building materials such as aluminium are created, the process leaves a huge carbon footprint. It uses a lot of energy, which is fueled by non-sustainable power, which leaves a large carbon footprint and affect our environment.

Transport of raw materials to a manufacturing plant also uses a lot of petrol, whose waste is turned into greenhouse gases.

Trees are the only building material that have a negative carbon footprint. Trees actually “breathe” CO2 from the environment and separate it into carbon and oxygen. The carbon becomes timber and the oxygen is dispersed back into the environment. Thus, trees store carbon in large amounts, turning a greenhouse gas into life-affirming oxygen.

When a forest is responsibly harvested, trees are only cut when they are mature and their process of storing carbon has slowed down. The trees are then replanted, begin to grow and start the carbon storage cycle all over again.

Instead of deforesting public land or harvesting from non-compliant plantations, timber suppliers certified by the MTCC are required to harvest their timber from plantations that are certified as using responsible forestry techniques. The MTCC certification ensures that any timber that carries its seal of approval has been cut while mature and replanted to keep storing carbon and help stop the acceleration of global warming.
