Remember the 1200@1200

Announcement posted by Altus Traffic 05 May 2016

As part of Yellow Ribbon National Road Safety Week, Australians are being asked to pause at noon this Thursday 5 May 2016 to remember the 1209 people who were killed on our roads last year.

Mr Michael Bradley, Chief Executive, AAA noted “An 11 per cent spike in the road toll over the past 12 months shows that every Australian, including our governments, must do more to make our roads safer. With 1,200 Australians killed and more than 30,000 seriously injured annually, road safety must be a national priority.”

Mr Peter Frazer, SARAH President added “Despite the statistics, road injury and death remains mostly hidden from the community. Unfortunately the figures tell us nothing about the personal stories of those involved, of our emergency services personnel who become traumatised by what they see, of the parents and partners left to identify their loved ones, and of the sad legacy faced by family and friends for the rest of their lives.”

Mr Terry Birss, CEO Road Safety Education Ltd went on to say “Often all you hear after a road tragedy is that some anonymous person has been killed, and that traffic is banked up, delaying commuters from getting home. But speak with emergency service workers about what they face, and with families and friends about what they endure after the death of a loved one, it is impossible not to be moved.”

Mr Jeff Doyle, CEO Altus Traffic Australia said “We believe that our Community wants to show that they stand ‘shoulder to shoulder’ with those whose lives have been shattered. Indeed in his 2016 Road Safety Statement, Governor-General, Sir Peter Cosgrove has asked all Australians to display a yellow ribbon and to support the 1200@1200 remembrance event.”

“So at midday this Thursday we are asking that all Australians stop for a moment to remember the 1200 killed on our roads last year, and to also show their support for those families and friends.

“Then show that you stand in solidarity with them by pledging to “DRIVE So Others Survive” and by wearing a yellow ribbon, or flying one from your vehicle! You will be making a real difference.” Peter Frazer said.
