Taking a collaborative approach to helping businesses get “Fit4Change” during QLD Small Business Week

23 May 2016 Brisbane, QLD: A group of Brisbane businesses has taken a unique approach to improve the lives of their clients - banding together to create a unique multidisciplinary hub to help build a good business and have a positive impact on those connected to it. The Goods - made up of 5 companies from a range of areas including purpose building, workplace culture, branding and identity, business process improvement, and accounting / business advisory - have chosen to collaborate - rather than compete - to truly help business owners.

Adam Dierselhuis, co-founder of The Goods and director of The Goods crew member O'Connells OBM says that collaboration is key when it comes to adding value to your clients.

"When it comes to collaboration - one plus one equals three – so who you can connect with to better help others" Dierselhuis said.

"That's why we created The Goods, because we know we can't do it all – and by creating a collective of businesses with aligned values – we’re taking the notion of customer-centricity to a new level.”

The five companies have worked together to develop a free online business assessment that can be used to identify immediate areas of improvement in a business. It's been designed to not only provide a quick status check on key business areas - but also to prompt those taking it to think about their business in ways they might not usually consider.

"We've designed the questions around key qualities and characteristics we’ve seen over the last 20 years of working with clients that underpin a thriving business," Mr Dierselhuis said. "It's not your usual business health check - it's a unique 360 degree view of critical business areas in an engaging and meaningful format.

It's proving to be a valuable resource for business owners.

"The Goods assessment truly showed our strengths and weaknesses in what we thought to be a stable and successful business," says Dean Whalley of Newman Mechanical in Geebung, on Brisbane's North.

"It's helped us strengthen behind the scenes to keep us moving forward," Mr Whalley said.

The Goods "crew" have just finished travelling around the state as a part of QLD Small Business Week - taking businesses through the assessment and running workshops on the theme “fit4change”.

"It's been fantastic hearing what so many small businesses are doing - really taking the challenge of small business head on to innovate and do things differently," Mr Dierselhuis said.

"It is hard work, so just remember to take a moment, each day, to appreciate what's around you - and if you find yourself against a wall - you use it to bounce forward, and that really is what small business is doing now."

"It's our hope that this assessment will act as a diagnostic tool to guide businesses across Australia - we are looking forward to seeing what themes and similarities emerge so that we can really hone in and help address some of those key pains business is feeling."
