Melbourne, 28 August 2002 - NCR Australia launched its NCR FastLane self-checkout system, the technology that allows shoppers to scan, bag and pay for their own merchandise, at the Retail Business Technology 2002 Exhibition in Melbourne.
"NCR FastLane allows shoppers to bypass the 'manned' lanes and scan, bag and select their preferred method of payment on screen, using cash, EFTPOS or a credit card," said Mr Jason Jarvis, Program Director, NCR FastLane, Retail Solutions Division SAPC.
"The systems can be configured to accommodate shoppers buying just a few items or those with a trolley-load."
The NCR system, already popular among U.S. and European consumers, is likely to become operational in some of the larger retail and discount department stores in Australia by early 2003, according to Jarvis.
In its June 2002 report, Changing Lanes: Self-Checkout Systems Rev Up the Adoption Curve, retail information technology analyst IDC said: "Self-checkout systems have finally reached a crucial stage in the adoption curve where accelerated growth seems to be on the horizon."
Mr Jarvis adds that NCR FastLane is already in use throughout Kmart and other US retailers, including Albertson's, Publix and Shaw's grocery stores. European retailers are also embracing the technology, with installations in the Netherlands, Italy and Turkey.
Recent consumer surveys in the UK indicated that more than 55 per cent of the respondents said they were likely to use self-checkout counters if they were installed at their local supermarkets.

"It's all about making shopping more convenient for the consumer, as it gives them the option of avoiding queues, as well as more control over their transactions and privacy," Mr Jarvis said. "We believe consumers in Australia and New Zealand will show the same enthusiasm about self-checkout as their counterparts in other parts of the world."
Mr Jarvis said that NCR is committed to the self-checkout market and to meeting all the needs of the point of service - an area that is critical to retailers building lasting relationships with their customers.
Other leading edge solutions demonstrated at the show include NCR RealPrice electronic shelf labels, NCR EasyPoint web kiosk solutions, the NCR RealPOS 7456 point of sale terminal and 7167 thermal printer, and the NCR RealScan 7872 bi-optic scanner.
NCR RealPrice electronic shelf labels ensure the price in the aisle is the same as the price at the point of sale. It allows quick and accurate pricing of items and reduced costs and improved operational efficiencies. A wide range of text and price messages can be programmed in advance.
The NCR EasyPoint self-service kiosks use Web-based technology to help consumers quickly obtain information to make purchase decisions. NCR's RealPOS is more than just a POS device, as it also supports features such as consumer advertising, stock location and inventory queries, and computer-based training for store associates.
