News: New Vehicle Sales At Record Half-Year Highs, June Sales Boom Belies Drawn-Out Election Campaigning

Announcement posted by CarAdvice 07 Jul 2016

~ YTD sales up 3.4 per cent, on track for all-time record, Toyota, Mazda and Hyundai topping charts ~
Sydney, Australia – July 7, 2016 – New vehicle sales in Australia are higher than they have ever been as we pass the half-way point of 2016, according to the latest VFACTS data.

CarAdvice.com, Australia’s fastest-growing automotive publisher, has outlined the country’s automotive trends for the first six months of the year, and notes that record sales have come largely off the back of a booming business fleet market, as well as increased private SUV sales.

Year-to-date (YTD) sales sit at 598,140 units, up 3.4 per cent, putting the market on track to push 1.2 million by the end of December. A number of leading brands including Mazda, Subaru and Kia (to name just a few) all posted record tallies.

“That YTD sales are at record highs comes as little surprise, considering market pressures demand constant growth. Australia is the world’s most competitive new car market, and it shows,” said CarAdvice.com Senior Editor Mike Costello.

“At the end of the day, the consumer is the winner, because it’s easier than ever to find a factory backed discount on your new car, as well as a compelling cut-rate finance deal and guaranteed aftersales care extensions.”

The leading brands are Toyota (up 0.6 per cent to 102,344, albeit to a reduced market share of 17.1 per cent), followed by Mazda (up around 8 per cent to 60,973), Hyundai (up 8.5 per cent to 54,350), Holden (down 7 per cent to 48,010) and a resurgent Ford (up a very healthy 16 per cent to 40,383).

Ford’s growth is particularly notable, with its resurgence put down to the dominant Australian-engineered Ranger ute, plus high-profile new models such as the Mustang sports car and Everest off-roader.

Positions 5-10 are occupied by Mitsubishi, Nissan, Volkswagen, Subaru and Kia — the last of which is up a massive 28 per cent this year thanks to a strong marketing push and its much-touted industry-topping warranty.

Other notable fast-growing brands (up more than 20 per cent) include BMW, Jaguar, Lamborghini, Land Rover, LDV, Porsche and Volvo. The biggest losers are Fiat Chrysler’s passenger and SUV brands, led by Jeep (down 51 per cent, outsold by Land Rover), Peugeot/Citroen, and Chinese brand Foton Light.

Volume brands Holden and Volkswagen have also lost out this year, having sold 3737 and 2211 units fewer over the course of 2016 than in the same period last year. Volkswagen’s sales drop is down to numerous factors beyond the ‘Dieselgate’ issue.

Meanwhile, in June alone — traditionally the biggest month — sales grew by 2.2 per cent to 128,569, breaking the previous record on the back of industry-wide factory discounting, and in spite of any federal election-related uncertainties.

For the fourth successive month, the heavily discounted Hyundai i30 was the most popular new vehicle in June. The 6432 registered sales last month was the highest individual tally for any new vehicle in many years.

“The June all-time record figure was certainly more interesting, because sales belied any uncertainties that we speculated could be caused by the interminable election campaign. Can the market maintain its momentum? We will see,” Costello said.
