Lucky Penny’ blends renowned talents of Vince Frost and Henrik Kubel

SYDNEY - Vince Frost has designed an art installation for Sydney’s newest creative hub located at 16 Eveleigh Street, Redfern. Using an adaptation of Danish typographer and designer Henrik Kubel’s font called India, Vince Frost’s ‘Lucky Penny’ artwork is a three dimensional, typographic celebration of a time that once was.

The work connects the narrative of luck to the building’s history when it was tenanted by Sheldon Leather Goods, a luxury women’s handbag company, circa 1950. As a sign of good luck, Sheldon Leather Goods would place a copper penny in the pocket of each handbag, a brand gesture that came to be affectionately known as the ‘Lucky Penny’.

“There have been many tenants in this wonderful building over the years and with our studio’s recent move to 16 Eveleigh Street, the idea of “luck” struck me as paramount,” Vince Frost explains.

The artwork’s lyricism is borne out by using copper pipe reminiscent of the pennies of the day. The piece is constructed using 20mm plumbing pipe manufactured by Chunk Design who worked with the artwork with exact specifications to electronically cut out a template for each individual piece.

“As a designer I’m drawn to the collaborative process, so it was a pleasure to be able to work with Chunk Design and my own design team to create this work. It reflects an important historical story of the building and heralds a new chapter for Redfern as Sydney’s newest creative precinct,” Frost says.

“Some might call it a coincidence, some may say it’s a fluke,” continues Frost, “but we feel we have a ‘lucky’ theme going on here. The building address is number 16, Redfern’s post code is 2016 and the building was refurbished in 2016. The gestures inherent in the ‘Lucky Penny’ artwork pretty much sum it up.”

16 Eveleigh Street is a landmark building that has been revitalised by architect Andy Carson to house a mix of creative tenants.
