Cranky & Irritable? Big Wet Water Could Be The Answer

Announcement posted by Big Wet 19 Jul 2016

Healthy skin, digestion, weight loss – the list of physical reasons why we need to drink water is lengthy and well documented. But research is now honing in on how water can affect our moods and cognitive behaviour.

A recent study published in The Journal of Nutrition, focusing on physically active women, showed that “mid-levels of dehydration resulted in adverse changes in key mood states.”

When the subjects became dehydrated they showed a significant decrease in vigour, but an increase in fatigue, headaches and difficulty concentrating.

Evidence in various studies has shown that fluid is drawn out of the brain cells during dehydration and there is evidence that the brain has to work harder because of this.

Professor Andrew Scholey, director of the Centre for Human Psychopharmacology at Melbourne’s Swinburne University, says lack of water can definitely affect alertness and cause irritability. To ensure you aren’t dehydrated he suggests looking for darker-coloured urine, a reduction in alertness and a reduced reaction time.

The good news is that nothing is permanent and re-hydrating essentially reverses any ill effects on the brain so moods and energy levels will eventually return to normal.

At Big Wet Natural Spring Water they are happy to drink to that! Established in 1994, Big Wet’s natural spring water is sourced from a granite spring in the heart of Victoria’s Spa Country and is available delivered to homes and offices in both 11 litre and 15 litre bottles. Delivery is available in Melbourne and surrounding areas.
