Builder in Perth: “Don’t Make These DIY Home Renovations Mistakes”

Announcement posted by Next Level Extensions 28 Jul 2016

Home renovations builder in Perth reveals the biggest mistakes usually made by DIY home renovators.
Perth, WA, 28 July 2016 - One look at a cable TV schedule or a drive through almost any neighbourhood is enough to convince most people that home renovations are popular in Perth and across Australia. However, there can be a dark side to popularity: a lot of people attempt home renovations, only to find out they are in over their heads.

According to Craig Johns, Director of Next Level Extensions, a firm with 70 years’ combined experience performing home renovations in the Perth area, the results aren’t always pretty:

“Sometimes the TV shows make home renovations look too easy. Unfortunately, a lot of people end up making big mistakes because they are inexperienced. Some, as well-meaning as they may be, just don’t have the ability or wherewithal to perform home renovations and make them look professional enough to live in.”

Recently, on the company blog, Mr Johns published an article about DIY home renovation mistakes that can cost homeowners more than it would to have someone else do it right for them the first time. There are some DIY errors that are common and avoidable.

Substandard Materials

Many well-meaning DIY home renovators think they can save a lot of money on materials. Unfortunately, those who buy “cheap materials” usually end up getting exactly what they paid for. Those who renovate their homes so they can live in them longer will be spending years with their renovations. The money saved by purchasing cheap materials usually isn’t worth having to live with the result for the next ten to twenty years.

Inexact Measurements

Professional builders make exact measurements because they know how important it is. Measurements have to be perfect or the angles of a home renovation are “thrown off.” This can make the entire renovation look bad and it can severely compromise structural elements.

Lack of Preparation

There is a lot of “prep work” to any home renovation. It can be tempting for a DIY renovator to skip the preparation but it can damage the result in the long run.

The Never-Ending Downward Spiral

Some homeowners start what looks to be a simple home renovation and end up tearing an entire room down. Professionals can look at a home and tell what is going to need changing. From wiring to structural elements, sometimes a simple renovation turns into a long trip down the rabbit hole.

Some Home Renovations Require a Professional

While Mr Johns acknowledges and admires those who wish to do their own home renovations, he cautions against taking on too large or complicated a job if one is not a professional builder. According to Mr Johns:

“If you need to paint a room or maybe repair a wall or two, it’s usually OK. But any major home renovations should be left to the professionals. We spend a lot of time repairing work that was done by well-meaning homeowners. When it’s all said and done, they usually wish they had hired a professional from the beginning.”
