Young and old ‘live in the moment’ and share a special inter-generational experience

Announcement posted by Reconnect PR 12 Aug 2016

Story Time at Group Homes Australia helps residents feel settled, content and purposeful.
A number of children have been taken on regular visits to Group Homes Australia, a new model of dementia and aged care.

Group Homes Australia provides accommodation and care for older Australians and for those living beyond a diagnosis of dementia. Each home is beautifully and safely renovated. There are six to ten residents per home. Each Group Homes Australia home looks, smells and feels just like a regular home. The homes blend into the suburbs and communities that they are situated in.

The program involves Family Day Care children along with their educator, Michelle Klass, visiting the residents living beyond a diagnosis of dementia for up to forty minutes per session. This is part of an inter-generational initiative in partnership with Group Homes Australia, where the aged and young benefit from their shared experiences.

The residents and children read their favourite stories, sing nursery rhymes and enjoy conversation together.

Michelle is a Family Day Care educator registered with Ku-ring-gai Family Day Care Scheme. She was approached by Group Homes Australia, CEO and Founder, Tamar Krebs to participate in the program.

Homemakers (carers) at the home noted how animated, settled & content the residents are during the children's visit and how happy they are long after the children have gone.

Every time that Michelle attends story time with her four children, all aged between 1-3 years old, her passion for teaching is reignited.

Michelle says: “The beautiful connection between the young and old and how they support each other in different ways is just too precious. There is a common appreciation for each other. For a brief period of time, the dementia residents actually feel needed and appreciated. For the children, it is an opportunity for them to have a surrogate grandparent. It is all about living in the moment, with no expectations on either side.”

CEO and Founder of Group Homes Australia, Tamar Krebs, says: “For our residents, for a moment in time they feel needed again, they have a purpose to read to the children and engage in something meaningful.”
