Monthly Drone | MEASURE AUSTRALIA

Announcement posted by Measure Australia 06 Sep 2016

-TV and talkback worthy drone news from around the world -
From planning road-rules for the skies to gifting solar-powered drones to the Pope, drones are not disappearing from news headlines anytime soon.

This was a quirky month for drones worldwide, with Domino’s successfully completing its first drone pizza delivery, British prisons intercepting illegal deliveries of their own and Zuckerberg gifting Pope Francis a solar-powered drone.

However, the more serious undertone of drone regulations also took centre stage on a global scale. The U.S. made a bold move to allow commercial drones to fly without needing a special waiver. Additionally, it is evident that we can forecast some busy skies in the coming years with NASA presenting a drone traffic plan to America’s Federal Aviation Administration by the end of 2019.

With the U.S. planning for a drone centric future it begs the question, are Australian regulators planning for our drone-filled future? The Australian helicopter industry has recently expressed its concern on the matter claiming mid-air collisions are only a matter of time. Furthermore, concern is growing that no drone zones are being ignored by hobbyists. Only last week, a drone collided with a car on the Harbour Bridge bringing these fears to fruition.

Aonghus Stevens, Chief Technology Officer of Australia’s leading drone service provider; Measure Australia, states: “Drones are rapidly entering the mainstream and while regulators here and abroad are working hard to keep up there is still a lot of work to be done to avoid potentially catastrophic collisions.”
