Headache Australia and the Brain Foundation* are calling on the seven million Australians who suffer from debilitating migraines and chronic headaches to join the National Headache Register.

Joining is simple and free. All you need to do is visit the website and enter your first name and email address.

“This gives you access to the latest credible studies on headaches and migraine management and the opportunity to be involved in cutting edge research”, says Gerald Edmunds, Secretary General of the Brain Foundation.

“Dr Google may be readily accessible, but does not always point the sufferer in the right direction towards accurate diagnosis and effective pain management,” says Edmunds.

According to the World Health Organisation, migraine, tension-type headache and medication-overuse headache are of public health importance since they are responsible for high population levels of disability and ill health.**

And according to Newcastle based neurologist, Dr David Williams, medication overuse headache is common, affecting at least 1% of the population and is responsible for the majority of recurrent daily headaches and the majority of referrals to headache specialists.***

“There needs to be greater understanding about how far reaching the consequences are for sufferers and their families,” says Edmunds.

“In recent correspondence our members have told us how migraine impacts them in daily life:

·      “Migraine totally debilitates me for 24 hours. It’s like a day I don’t exist.”

·      “I feel like I’ve been cranky for 22 years.”

·      “My life feels small and very, very restricted”

·      “My work is impacted and I can’t be counted on for any social events”

“These latest responses are consistent with the picture of extreme impact on sufferers that we have built up since establishing the Brain Foundation in 1970.”

“We hear many comments from patients and their carers about migraine causing great disruption to their lives. The reality is that the current treatments all have a place but sadly many patients and their clinicians are not always aware of the options available right now. Each year we see more approaches both in drug and drug-free therapies. Joining the National Headache Register is a good first step to increasing awareness and improving their quality of life.”

CEFALY sponsors Headache and Migraine Week

Cefaly is a clinically proven and drug-free device for the treatment and prevention of Migraine and Tension Headache.

Most headaches and migraines involve the trigeminal nerve. Its superior branch ends at the exit of the eye socket, underneath the skin of the forehead.

The Cefaly headband positions an adhesive electrode to the forehead and this generates precise micro-impulses that stimulate the nerve endings of the trigeminal nerve.

When applied for 20 minutes a day, Cefaly relaxes the trigeminal nerve and the nervous system via two principal mechanisms:

1. Endorphin producing migraine relief (prevention)

2. Targeted relief of migraines (neurostimulation effect fighting headache pain)

Cefaly reduces the frequency and intensity of migraines:

·      87% of users describe a definitive improvement*

·      65% reduction in head pain sensitivity*

Cefaly reduces acute anti-migraine drug intake by 75%*. It is effective, safe, well tolerated and easy to use.
