Supplier of Pumps in Australia: “Don’t Take Shortcuts.”

Announcement posted by Pump Solutions Australasia 15 Sep 2016

Importer of pumps in Australia reveals how shortcuts in planning and “price-point” mentality can cost businesses thousands of dollars.
Perth, WA, 15 September 2016 - Pump Solutions Australasia imports the finest pumps from around the world. They import from manufacturers based in Italy, Turkey, Japan, Germany and other countries. They insist upon only the highest quality pumps for all applications. According to owner Mike Hurlbatt:

“We learned long ago that you never save money when you buy cheap pumps. Even pumps of reasonable quality can malfunction. We provide pumps for a lot of larger operations where they are crucial to the bottom line. Downtime and repair can cost some of these companies thousands of dollars, depending upon how large their operations are. That is why we have left no stone unturned to find the finest pump manufacturers in the world. Nothing is too good for our customers.”

In New Zealand, engineers at a geothermal power station experienced the consequences of shortcuts in quality and design. They used four large pumps with a capacity of 170,000 litres per minute. One of the four pumps developed excessive noise and vibration and they had to remove it within seven weeks of installation.

When engineers did a root-cause analysis on the failed pump, they found that a number of shortcuts had been taken in design and in settling for inferior materials. The pumps were found to have sustained numerous points of damage due to inferior design. It was found that the manufacturer had never actually used that pump for the application is was being used for.

In addition, the materials and workmanship were inferior, adding to the deterioration and degradation of important parts of the pump. The engineers determined that the pump should have undergone computational fluid dynamics (CFD) analysis. Between poor quality and design shortcuts, they were lucky things didn’t go a lot worse.

They had to remove the damaged pump, replace it and alter the fluid dynamics via a series of expensive “fixes.” In the end, the project cost a lot more than it would have if they had not taken shortcuts and had bought better quality pumps.
