A MOB OF KANGAROOS MAKES A SPECIAL VISIT TO HEART OF SYDNEY, THANKS TO COLORBOND® STEEL

Announcement posted by COLORBOND(R) steel 20 Oct 2016

A mob of kangaroos is about to invade Sydney’s CBD!   Created from COLORBOND® steel to commemorate the much loved Australian brand’s 50th anniversary, 22 kangaroos have been designed and produced by award-winning sculptor Louis Pratt.

The COLORBOND® steel mob is made up of full size male and female kangaroos, along with a handful of joeys with the largest being 160cm high.

The mob will be exhibited at Hickson Road Reserve from 25 October 2016 to 27 October 2016 and the 22 roos are made from all 22 colours in the current COLORBOND® steel range.  There is no charge to visit the exhibition.  Each day between 12 noon and 2pm, the COLORBOND® steel roos will be joined by some real life joeys from Featherdale Wildlife Park.

Sculptor Louis Pratt is renowned for his work – he won the prestigious $100,000 Mt Buller Sculpture Prize in 2013 - and created the mob over six weeks.  Together they weigh over 700 kilograms.

“This was a fun job.  Drawing, designing and producing the mob by hand took some work but I enlisted the services of some great fellow artists to lend me a hand,” said Louis.   “I’m thrilled with the result and the location for the pop-up exhibition is terrific – grass, water, views – I think they’ll be very happy here!”

After the exhibition three of the kangaroos, Ned, Matilda and Banjo (pictured), will be auctioned off and proceeds will go to the Australian Council of State Emergency Services.  Those who visit the kangaroos in Sydney also have the chance to win one to take home.

Since 1966 COLORBOND® steel has become an integral part of Australian life – from the garden shed to some of the biggest and most beautiful pieces of architecture in the country, and now the iconic kangaroo.

“We think Louis Pratt’s work is really interesting and unique and we are really proud he has created this wonderful mob of kangaroos for us to help celebrate our 50thanniversary,” said Lisa Dent, Manager Marketing & Market Development - Sales & Marketing, BlueScope.

Like Australia itself, the story of COLORBOND® steel is built on decades of innovation and improvement, which has earned the brand its position as one of the world’s toughest, most advanced building materials.

“Australia’s widely diverse environmental conditions demand a product that is specifically tested and developed for Australia. Our research and innovation teams have been conducting real-world outdoor exposure testing and accelerated laboratory testing to thousands of panels of COLORBOND® steel for almost fifty years to ensure COLORBOND® steel is an ideal building material for Australian conditions so whether the roos reside in the heat of the Northern Territory or much cooler climate of Tasmania they’ll sure feel at home,” said Lisa.

For decades COLORBOND® steel has been a popular choice from roofs to fences, sheds, garages, public buildings and even art.  It is much-loved by world-leading architects creating award-winning commercial buildings and residential homes, as well as farmers needing a strong and durable material suited to Australia’s tough conditions and now Australian wildlife.
