VIDEO & IMAGE RELEASE - A MOB OF KANGAROOS MAKES A SPECIAL VISIT TO HEART OF SYDNEY

Announcement posted by COLORBOND(R) steel 25 Oct 2016

A mob of kangaroos has invaded Sydney’s CBD!   Created from COLORBOND® steel to commemorate the much loved Australian brand’s 50th anniversary, 22 kangaroos have been designed and produced by award-winning sculptor Louis Pratt.

The COLORBOND® steel mob is made up of full size male and female kangaroos, along with a handful of joeys with the largest kangaroo being 160cm high.

The mob will be exhibited at Hickson Road Reserve from 25 October 2016 to 27 October 2016 and the 22 roos are made from all 22 colours in the current COLORBOND® steel range.  There is no charge to visit the exhibition.  Each day between 12 noon and 2pm, the COLORBOND® steel roos will be joined by some real life joeys from Featherdale Wildlife Park.

Mark Vassella, chief executive, BlueScope Australia and New Zealand was on hand to open the “hop up” exhibition.

“I’m fairly sure that when the first coil of COLORBOND® steel rolled off the paint line at Port Kembla back in 1966, no one imagined how successful it would be,” he said.

“Over the last fifty years COLORBOND® steel became a firm favourite with builders because it was the perfect building product for Australia’s harsh climates: non-combustible and resists the progress of fire*; good in the extreme heat of the desert; tough in tropical storms and strong enough to withstand fierce winds.

“We are extremely proud to be producing such an iconic Australian building material, now exported to 17 countries around the world, and now incorporating industry leading coating technologies developed right here in Australia.  This couldn’t have been achieved without our 6,000 people across the country making sure this product continues to go to strength to strength,” he added.

Sculptor Louis Pratt is renowned for his work – he won the prestigious $100,000 Mt Buller Sculpture Prize in 2013 - and created the mob over six weeks.  Together, the 22 roos weigh over 700 kilograms.

“This was a fun job.  Drawing, designing and producing the mob by hand took some work but I enlisted the services of some great fellow artists to lend me a hand,” said Louis.   “I’m thrilled with the result and the location for the pop-up exhibition is terrific – grass, water, views – I think they’ll be very happy here!”

After the exhibition three of the kangaroos, Ned, Matilda and Banjo, will be auctioned off and proceeds will go to the Australian Council of State Emergency Services (ACSES).  Those who visit the kangaroos in Sydney also have the chance to win one to take home.

ACSES Chair and Acting NSW SES Commissioner Greg Newton thanked BlueScope for its support.

“ACSES is proud to receive the proceeds from the auction on behalf of all State Emergency Services across Australia. There are 40,000 SES volunteers nationally who will benefit from BlueScope’s generosity,” he said.

Since 1966 COLORBOND® steel has become an integral part of Australian life – from the garden shed to some of the biggest and most beautiful pieces of architecture in the country, and now the iconic kangaroo.
