Vertel wins major global award for network implementation

Australian telco carrier beats international competition to win 2016 MEF Excellence Award for Enterprise Application of the Year – Education
Sydney, Australia – 15 November 2016 – Australian Telecommunications carrier Vertel has won a prestigious award at the MEF 2016 Excellence Awards in Baltimore, North America.
Vertel won the global award for Enterprise Application of the Year in the Education category for delivering carrier grade Wide Area Network (WAN), connecting 89 schools across 5 major regions covering Broken Bay, Lismore, Maitland-Newcastle, Canberra and Goulburn, and Wollongong. The WAN network provided critical connectivity to the schools in regional and remote locations using Vertel’s innovative hybrid fibre and wireless service architecture delivered over our independent and redundant MPLS core.
The MEF Excellence Awards recognise service, application, technology, professional excellence and innovation in the global Third Network community. This prestigious global awards program focuses on advanced Carrier Ethernet (CE) services and emerging Third Network services powered by CE 2.0, LSO (Lifecycle Service Orchestration), NFV, and SDN networking technologies.

The judging panel for the MEF 2016 Excellence Awards was comprised of global and regional senior analysts from ATLANTIC-ACM, Current Analysis, Frost & Sullivan, IHS Markit, Metanoia, Ovum, SDxCentral, and Vertical Systems, in addition to independent judges.
Vertel implemented a highly innovative carrier grade WAN service for an education customer spread across a large geographical area connecting regional and remote school sites. A high capacity, carrier grade microwave access service was commissioned at each education site. This access service was then integrated back into the redundant MPLS core to provide an end to end CE 2.0 certified Layer 2 network service for the customer. Vertel overcame the traditional issues of high cost and long delivery times for fibre based services to these locations and delighted the customer in their responsiveness, professionalism and commercial flexibility.

Features of the network:
- Cost Savings: In regional and remote Australia, fibre is incredibly expensive to build. Vertel’s ability to use carrier grade Microwave meant that the Education Network and each school made significant cost savings without sacrificing the quality or capacity of the service delivered to each school site.
- Productivity Gains: High availability services with strict SLAs meant that each school was able to increase productivity by increasing its ability to connect with the Education Network and increasing the speed with which it could upload and download data.
- Agility: Vertel was able to offer rapid deployment of services that exceed all of the Education Network’s technical and performance requirements. The entire network was designed and deployed in a matter of months.
- Performance: A MEF 2.0 certified service by its very nature out performs lower grade ‘best effort’ services. For many schools previously operating on a copper service the performance differences were significant.
- Quality of Service (QoS): Vertel was unique in its ability to provide CE2.0 certified Ethernet services in regional and remote school locations.
