Diabetes NSW&ACT supports CSIRO Total Wellbeing Diet to help manage diabetes

Announcement posted by Filtered Media | telling your story, brilliantly 17 Nov 2016

Becomes first weight loss program recognised by Diabetes Qualified
Sydney, 17 November 2016 – The CSIRO’s Total Wellbeing Diet has become the first weight loss program to be recognised as “diabetes friendly” by health education organisation, Diabetes Qualified, a newly formed division of Diabetes NSW & ACT.

Diabetes Qualified is committed to delivering solutions that make lasting positive impacts on the lives of people living with diabetes, and the recognition is an important step in directing the community to a clear set of dietary guidelines that have been scientifically substantiated by the CSIRO, and can cater to their specific needs.

Sturt Eastwood, CEO of Diabetes NSW & ACT welcomes the announcement. “Type 2 diabetes represents 85-90 per cent of diabetes cases nationwide, and affects over 1 million people across Australia. It’s a diagnosis that is largely manageable through exercise and healthy eating, and the Total Wellbeing Diet is a proven and valuable tool in assisting our community with weight loss and maintaining a healthy lifestyle,” he said.

CSIRO Research Director for Nutrition and Health, and the co-author of the CSIRO Total Wellbeing Diet, Professor Manny Noakes, echoed Mr Eastwood’s statements.
“One in four Australian adults now has either diabetes or impaired glucose intolerance, yet weight loss of just seven per cent or the equivalent of five kilograms of weight of the average Australian can reduce the risk of type 2 diabetes by 58 percent, as well as improving their health and wellbeing,” she said.

Total Wellbeing Diet for Diabetes includes:
  • 12 week CSIRO Total Wellbeing Diet program
  • Exclusive weight loss starter’s guide for people with pre-diabetes or type 2 diabetes
  • Higher protein, low GI menu plans that are carbohydrate controlled and have a lower glycaemic load
  • An exercise plan
  • Options to receive support with an accredited practising dietician
