Kenelm Tonkin leads petition to President-Elect Trump's new Education Secretary, Betsy DeVos

Entrepreneurship and financial literacy a must in schools
Kenelm Tonkin, CEO of Tonkin Corporation (www.tonkin.co), is leading a petition to have entrepreneurship and financial literacy taught in schools.

According to the United States Bureau of Labor Statistics, the number of new companies formed less than one year old has dropped from 4.1 million in 1994 to 3.0 million in 2015. Regardless of overall entrepreneurial confidence, the Bureau's long-awaited study reveals only 50% of new businesses succeed to the fifth year.

"21 years of suppressed entrepreneurship is a slow poison for the economy. We can all feel the prolonged economic malaise and the lagging figures now prove it. That's bad enough. But the extended length of this trend means an entire generation has never seen a vibrant entrepreneurial culture. That's not good for America", Kenelm Tonkin said.

"We need to instill entrepreneurial thinking and teach children how to identify opportunities to serve others. Service is the key to entrepreneurial success but our education system is not adapting fast enough to empower our children with the skills and practice necessary to seize future opportunities. I'm afraid our children are being trained narrowly for jobs which are disappearing rather than being taught how to identify and serve the needs of others."

Kenelm Tonkin's campaign calls on Education Secretary nominee Betsy DeVos to include entrepreneurship and financial literacy in school curricula.

"It's a start", said Mr Tonkin, a 17 year entrepreneurial veteran. "If we can just let children taste the possibilities of entrepreneurship early, they'll be a feast for everyone in years to come."
