Trend Micro launches Home Network Security, the new product for Australian home internet users

Trend Micro Home Network Security protects all connected devices at home and helps kids stay safe online

SYDNEY, 6 December 2016 – Trend Micro today launches its new product for Australian consumers, Trend Micro Home Network Security, providing protection against network intrusions, web threats and identity theft for every device connected to the internet at home. Trend Micro Home Network Security includes parental control features that provide a safer internet for children and the ability to manage family internet usage.

It is currently estimated that Australian households have an average of 11 connected devices, with this figure expected to grow to 29 connected devices in 2020[i].  Most of these devices are not protected from network attacks, web threats and other risks and provide cybercriminals with new avenues to attack consumers.

Trend Micro Home Network Security offers a new and additional layer of protection for the home network and internet connected devices like game consoles, smart TVs, smartphones and tablets, and smart home gadgets. With no security software installation required, Trend Micro Home Network Security simply plugs into the wireless router to protect the home network and all devices connected to the internet from an easy to use app.

More than a third (33%) of Australian home internet users are concerned that viruses and other threats could infect the devices in their household, according to the Trend Micro Global Security Report[ii]. The report found that 51% of Australian respondents have all their digital devices connected via one central wireless router, with 60% viewing financial information online, 41% accessing credit card information and 44% uploading and downloading pictures.

Tim Falinski, consumer director for Trend Micro in APAC, believes these findings highlight the growing need for strong security across all devices accessing the internet at home.

“The rise in popularity of connected devices is seeing homes being more connected than ever before,” said Falinski. “Families are using all types of gadgets to access the internet at home including smartphones, tablets, game consoles and smart TVs, which is seeing kids today connected to the internet for longer periods of time. While traditional devices such as laptops and home PCs are usually protected by security software, these new smart devices are often forgotten and can be a huge security risk for families.”

Trend Micro Home Network Security comes with an easy-to-use smartphone app that lets the user manage the security of the devices connected to the internet at home, set parental controls and time limits for game consoles and social media apps, and alerts users to any important security events that occur within the home network.

In the lead up to Christmas, Trend Micro has released the IoT buyer’s guide for smart parents and guardians as part of its Internet Safety for Kids and Families initiative. This is a simple test that parents can take to know what security factors they should look out for when buying a particular smart toy or kid-friendly smart device. It also outlines practical tips on what parents should do to help better secure their children.

Availability and price

Trend Micro Home Network Security is available in Australia Wednesday 7 December, online and at Harvey Norman. RRP $399, price includes Home Network Security station and two year subscription.

Trend Micro recommends that Home Network Security should be used in conjunction with Trend Micro Maximum Security for all devices.
