~ inaugural gathering of technologists in Canberra prioritises importance of flexibility, security and cost within IT infrastructure ~
SYDNEY, AUSTRALIA, December 7 2016 - Senior technologists have called out 2017 as the year that OpenStack becomes mainstream in the Government at a recent conference focusing on Open Source cloud technology, the inaugural OpenStack Australia Day: Government, in Canberra.

Citing flexibility, security and cost as the main drivers behind Open Source adoption in government, more than 150 users from the public and private sector attended to discuss the importance of Open Source software within Government. The event also attracted vendors and solution providers who actively support Government organisations, such as HPE and Oracle, as well as founder of the OpenStack community in Australia, Aptira.

“All IT enterprises need to have flexibility in their infrastructure, and OpenStack provides this flexibility. Government often has more stringent requirements so can be slower to adopt technology, however, it’s clear that OpenStack is helping Government close the gap,” said Roland Chan, Chief Operating Officer at Aptira.

“One of the reasons why Open Source software tends to be popular is because of cost. While three quarters of organisations say cost is a reason to adopt OpenStack, most technologists consider the agility and innovation that OpenStack allows to be of equal importance,” said the OpenStack Foundation’s Community Manager, Tom Fifield.

Vault System’s CEO Rupert Taylor-Price said “Security is of paramount important to the public sector, with many varying classifications, something OpenStack can handle via a single API. We believe OpenStack is the future for the Australian Federal government, which we anticipate pushing down into state government as well to the benefit of the taxpayer.”

OpenStack Australia Day: Government was held after strong interest from the public sector at the first OpenStack Australia Day held in May 2016. Notably, Sydney will host the high profile OpenStack Summit which attracts thousands of global OpenStack experts and professionals for the first time over three days commencing November 6 2017.
