Compuware launches OptimalJ 3.0 to accelerate J2EE development across the entire development team

Announcement posted by Bass PR 23 Jul 2003

Version 3.0 increases developer productivity and flexibility, produces better quality Java code
Compuware Asia-Pacific today announced the availability of Compuware OptimalJ 3.0, the latest version of its enterprise application development environment that helps organisations adopting J2EE standards to increase developer productivity and Java application quality.
With version 3.0, Compuware OptimalJ now includes tools for the entire application development team, as well as expanded plug-ins to industry-leading Integrated Development Environments (IDE). In addition, Compuware extended OptimalJ's integration capabilities to address the needs of application development projects that involve legacy integration.
Compuware OptimalJ accelerates the development, integration and maintenance of enterprise Java applications, enabling organisations to rapidly respond to business change. It is a model-driven, pattern-based development environment that dramatically reduces the time; cost, risk and complexity associated with delivering and maintaining Java applications. OptimalJ also implements the Object Management Group's (OMG) Model Driven Architecture (MDA) in its entirety, which enables IT departments to design software more quickly while also improving the quality and reusability of the code.
"Some 75 percent of most large-scale Java projects fail by missing both time and budget projections, which means there is a clear business need for increasing developer productivity, flexibility and consistency," said Mark Driver, Vice President and Research Director, Gartner. "Tools that abstract and simplify the foundations of J2EE while providing consistent quality through models and design patterns will be critical to the success of larger Java projects."
"OptimalJ is an innovative solution for development teams who need to reduce the risks, costs and complexity of building applications for the J2EE architecture," said John Debrincat, Vice President Compuware Asia Pacific. "This announcement continues our commitment to deliver developer productivity tools for the entire application development lifecycle".
Compuware OptimalJ 3.0 includes:
OptimalJ Developer Edition: To complete OptimalJ's solution portfolio for the entire development team, version 3.0 adds a developer-focused edition to the existing Architecture and Professional Editions. OptimalJ Developer Edition enables developers to focus on code customisation, debugging, tuning and testing, while protecting the code generated from the business models. As a result, architects, designers and developers can work together on a common application in an iterative development process, each with their own specialised edition of OptimalJ. Developer Edition includes code-visualisation capabilities and an application structure analysis tool, enabling developers to analyse the structure of existing applications, understand the dependencies and recommend changes to fix defective code.
New plug-ins supporting integration with all industry-leading IDEs: Additional IDE plug-ins extend OptimalJ's IDE support to include IBM WebSphere Studio Application Developer and SunONE Studio. Recognising that most companies have committed to an IDE, Compuware will continue to support the leading IDEs to ensure that companies can leverage their existing investments while benefiting from the power of Compuware OptimalJ. In addition, OptimalJ includes its own IDE and supports all leading application servers, databases and modeling tools.
Legacy integration: Compuware OptimalJ 3.0 adds support for IMS/TM to the product's existing CICS/COBOL integration capabilities. This is important since many application development projects involve legacy integration. Compuware OptimalJ is one of the only development environments that exposes the functionality--as opposed to just the data--of legacy programs for the successful integration of mainframe applications into distributed environments.
As one of the strategic initiatives Compuware has established to help customers quickly and confidently put applications into action, the latest updates to Compuware OptimalJ provide businesses with real solutions to overcome the most prevalent development challenges.
Compuware also today announced an application development case study conducted by the Middleware Company and titled Model Driven Development for J2EE Utilising a Model Driven Architecture (MDA) Approach. This case study demonstrated that an MDA development approach can yield productivity gains of up to 35 percent over traditional, code-centric development environments [Editors: see separate release today "Compuware: Landmark Study Reveals 35 Percent Productivity Gains for Businesses Using Model-Driven Architecture"].
