D-Link Announces Chassis-Based Media Converters

Announcement posted by D-Link Australia 30 May 2002

DMC-1000 saves space and keeps cabling neat and tidy
D-Link, a designer and manufacturer of networking, data communications, broadband and digital electronic technologies, has launched a chassis-based media converter. The D-Link DMC-1000 allows installation of multiple media converters in an equipment rack, together with the network devices for media conversion. The chassis-based media converter saves space and keeps cabling neat and tidy.
Media converters adapt signals capable of transmission on one type of cable to signals capable of transmission on another type of cable. This allows organisations to connect longer distance fiber cables between devices that are designed only for shorter distance cables, such as the Cat 5 twisted-pair cable.
The DMC-1000 Chassis includes a number of independent media converters and a chassis capable of housing up to 16 of these. Key features include: front power LEDs for bay and fan power status; hot swappable redundant power supplies; cooling fans on back-side (together with power supplies); and media converter power isolation for electrical isolation from each bay.
Organisations can start with a single media converter, equipped with its own housing and AC power adapter. As an organisation's requirements grow, a chassis can be mounted and media converters installed in the chassis. To install a stand-alone converter in the chassis you simply remove the metal case and slide in the PC board into the chassis slot. The chassis's own universal AC to DC power supply is then used instead of the media converters own AC to DC power adapters. An optional redundant power supply is available for installation in the chassis for maximum power availability.
"D-Links new chassis-based media converter is the ideal solution for organisations wanting to save on space and keep their cabling tidy. The DMC-1000 is designed to grow with an organisation and accommodates single or multiple media converters, " said Maurice Famularo, channel and marketing manager, D-Link Australia.
