New Release of Legato NetWorker Extends Manageability, Performance and Availability for Storage Networks

Announcement posted by Legato Systems Inc. 13 Sep 2001

NetWorker 6.1 enables dynamic drive sharing for SAN and NAS environments, expands NDMP support and availability options.
Legato Systems, Inc. (NASDAQ: LGTO), a worldwide leader in enterprise storage management software, today announced a new release of its flagship storage management software, Legato NetWorker 6.1, adding key features to improve the manageability, performance and availability of backup and restore operations in SAN (Storage Area Network) and NAS (Network-Attached Storage) environments. These new enhancements are designed to reduce the overall cost of ownership of information protection solutions for storage networks.

NetWorker 6.1 introduces a new Dynamic Drive Sharing (DDS) option that allows tape drives to be dynamically reconfigured and shared across multiple NetWorker Storage Nodes in a SAN environment. This option enhances manageability and enables optimal utilization of high performance tape libraries in a SAN while significantly reducing the overall investment and administrative expense. NetWorkers DDS option is the first to enable the sharing of tape drives between multiple Network Appliance File Servers in a NAS environment.

"Our SAN Connectable DTF-2 [Digital Tape Format] at 24-40MB/s speed and 200-518GB per tape supports many high demand applications on a variety of servers with multiple terabytes of data. Moving to NetWorker 6.1 will not only enable our customers to fully protect their environment and meet their service level commitments, but significantly reduce administrative costs as well," said, Steve Leaver, European Product Marketing Manager, Sony Broadcast & Professional, Europe. "Our customers' storage needs continue to grow rapidly and the added capabilities in NetWorker 6.1 will further increase their ability to efficiently scale and optimize their SAN performance."

NetWorker 6.1 also expands Legatos Linux support by adding NDMP (Network Data Management Protocol) support on NetWorker versions for Red Hat, Caldera, and SuSE Linux, providing Data Centers and Branch Offices with the option of using low-cost Linux servers for protecting NDMP-based Auspex, and EMC NAS file servers. To speed data recovery, NetWorker 6.1 also implements NDMPs Direct Access Restore (DAR) capabilities for the first time. Instead of scanning tapes to find needed files, DAR quickly positions tapes at the exact file location(s), delivering faster file level restores with less downtime.

Continued advancements in network-centric storage solutions demonstrate Legatos and Network Appliances commitment to providing robust data protection, said Paul Hansen, senior director of product marketing at Network Appliance. The recovery performance improvements provided by NetWorker NDMP DAR will benefit customers by delivering on fast and reliable file restore and a lower total cost of ownership.

To keep clustered NetWorker servers and e-business applications highly available, NetWorker 6.1 adds support for Legato Automated Availability Manager (formerly Legato Cluster Enterprise) on IBM AIX, HP-UX, Linux (Intel 86) and Windows 2000, as well as support for IBMs HACMP cluster software. This expands on the clustering options previously supported with NetWorker 6.0 and which are still supported in NetWorker 6.1, including Automated Availability Manager support on Solaris and Windows NT.

NetWorker 6.1 also provides support for Hewlett Packards new HP-UX 11i operating system, adding it to support for previous versions of that OS.

For Windows 2000 environments, NetWorker 6.1 adds support for Windows 2000 Change Journal (CJ), an NTFS 5.0 feature that logs all file system changes. During incremental backups, NetWorker quickly references CJ to identify changed files instead of traversing the entire file system. This is a critical enhancement for Windows environments, in order to reduce backup completion times and lower CPU consumption on application servers.

"With this announcement we are validating our commitment to bringing Legato customers the most advanced enterprise storage management software for information protection available," said David L. Beamer, executive vice president of worldwide sales and marketing, Legato Systems, Inc. "Coupling NetWorker 6.1 with our Celestra technology in a SAN provides a powerful example of how Legato optimizes storage network deployments to maximize protection and fulfill application performance demands. Legato NetWorker 6.1 provides more and better options for data center and branch office deployments, to protect and keep available business critical information while also reducing administrative overhead.
