Breaks the rules by doing away with unknown legal fees structure for divorce

LESSENING the impact of divorce on families is the focus for an innovative Gold Coast lawyer who has started her own mediation service to speed up property and custody agreements.

Fedorov Lawyers Director Marie Fedorov is the pioneer of ‘Family Mediation Station,’ a service that provides couples with the opportunity to avoid the usual costly drawn-out process and alleviate months of pain and suffering by sorting out their custody and property matters in a day.

As a family lawyer for more than 12 years, Marie has personally witnessed the emotional and financial strain of divorce and wanted to make the process less painful and less expensive.

“Divorce is always the absolute last option but a reality for 97,000 Australians each year,” she said.

“I see children stuck in the middle of the bitterness and that’s one of the many reasons why I came up with my one-day mediation and divorce program – it’s the way of the future. Family Mediation Station will save clients time, money and the emotional burden of having to go to Court. It also helps protect our most vulnerable - our children.”

Marie’s program now rivals exhaustive waiting lists at Government-funded mediation centres and at the same time provides peace of mind for clients concerned about mounting legal costs.

“Almost 50 per cent of divorces each year involve children and the average time between separation and divorce is three and a half years,” she said.

“It then takes five years or more before families can start to recover both economically and emotionally.

“We provide same day mediation and formalisation of an agreement. This is done on the spot so that clients can move on with their new life immediately.

“If an agreement is not reached, the parties have to retain lawyers and start the litigation process. It is therefore in everyone’s best interests to reach an agreement to avoid future costs and the stress as litigation can end up costing upwards of $40,000.”

In addition to providing couples with a quick and cost effective settlement, Marie’s dedication to making divorce as painless as possible will also help ease the rising costs on the tax-payer.

“I’ve done my research and the impact on communities from divorce costs the nation up to $14 billion in 2014, up from $12 billion in 2012 in government assistance payments, court costs and so on,” she said.

“I honestly believe my program should be rolled out across the country to the 97,000 Australians who divorce each year.

“It would be a fantastic legacy for me to leave behind knowing I had been able to ease the burden of divorce for Australians and their families.”
