MODE serves up innovative design for new Tennis Centre in Darwin

Announcement posted by MODE 22 May 2017

Site works began on the $16.7 million Marrara Tennis Centre last week, which will see an all-inclusive complex delivered that caters for local and international players with disability accessing the complex.

Local architecture design studio, MODE was commissioned to design this start-of-the-art tennis facility in August 2016, a project funded by the Northern Territory Government to stimulate the economy and sporting tourism in the area.

Striving for a modern design that promotes community accessibility and meets international court standards to further generate prospects for Marrara in hosting elite tournaments, was fundamental to MODE’s master planning.

MODE’s Darwin Studio Manager, Jenny Culgan said “It’s about achieving community opportunity and inclusion through design on an international scale.”

“Methodology behind our design work is about so much more than the tangible end product, but rather how the Tennis Centre can bring people together through events and ensuring that the facility can cater for large-scale attendance and players with a disability,” said Ms Culgan.

Architectural plans will complement a seamless flow of spectators and players visiting the centre, between the club house, courts and other facilities planned for the complex.

Flexibility in seating will accommodate 500 on a day-to-day basis and up to 4000 for major tournaments. This comes in addition to a 200 seated function room in the club house, significantly enhancing the limited facilities of this kind in Darwin currently.

Project managers AECOM, along with builder Halikos Group, join MODE on the project as the local team.

Minister for Tourism and Culture, Lauren Moss said “Once completed the Tennis Centre is expected to bring an economic benefit of nearly $4 million annually through new events.”

“Having an international standard tennis facility accessible to local players of all abilities will help better their skills, encourage more people to participate in the sport and attract national and international competitions to Darwin,” Ms Moss said.

Facilities will include a new club house, administration offices, function rooms, café and bar, other multi-purpose rooms, 15 international standard tennis courts, as well as, a multipurpose court and six hotshot courts for junior development.
