Grills And The Mystery

Announcement posted by Align Dentistry 29 May 2017

Grills are also known as “grillz” or “fronts”. These are decorative covers made of gold, silver or jewel-encrusted precious metals for teeth. They get snap over a person’s teeth for fashion purposes.

Some grill wearers have their teeth altered with gold crowns to permanently resemble a grill but generally, they are removable. Using a glue to attach the grill to the teeth has side effects. This method is not meant for internal use and eventually can damage the teeth and gum tissues! At present, there are no studies that show long term wear of grills is safe - but there are no studies that show that grills are harmful to the mouth, either. Grills that are made from non-precious (base) metals can cause irritation or metal allergic reactions.

If your grill is crafted improperly, it can be really harmful to the health of your teeth. Not only the quality of the material these are made of is questionable but also grills can even poison us. It has the potential to ruin our enamel and cause cavities and even cracks on our teeth.

In addition, putting a grill on your teeth might cause some misalignment of your teeth because these grills are “universal”. There are so many other problems associated with grills, such as the discoloration of teeth and developing gum diseases such as gingivitis or periodontitis.

Be careful about brushing and flossing to prevent potential problems when wearing a grill. If the food and other debris get trapped between the teeth and the grill, it will allow the bacteria to collect and produce acids. Tooth decay can be caused by the acids which can also harm gum tissue. Bacteria also contributes to stinky breath. The grills also have the potential to wear the enamel away on the opposing teeth and to irritate surrounding oral tissues.

Try and limit the amount of time wearing removable grills to prevent problems. You should always remove the grills before eating. Also, it is recommended that grills should be cleaned daily to remove bacteria and food debris. Any products that are dangerous to ingest should be avoided at all times such as jewellery cleaners.

Make absolutely sure you talk to your dentist first if you are considering getting a dental grill. Avoid creating a breeding ground for bacteria and find out exactly what materials the grill is made of. Even though the grills are trendy at the moment, but “pearl white teeth” will never go out of style.

The next time you decide to imitate the latest trend set by your favourite celebrity, stop and re-think about whether you are making the right choice or not and what could be the possible side effects.
