Equant Adds Broadband DSL Access To Its Global VPN Solutions

Announcement posted by Equant 06 Mar 2003

Four multinational corporations are already using the Equant managed DSLAccess service
Equant (NYSE: ENT) (Euronext Paris: EQU), an industry leader in global data and IP services for multinational businesses, has added managed Digital Subscriber Line (DSL) Access to its portfolio of global VPN services. Managed DSL Access enables multinational customers to bring small offices and home offices into their corporate VPNs over always-on, high-speed, cost-effective broadband connections.

DSL Access is currently available in seven countries to multinational corporations using Equants VPN solutions, Equant IP VPN and Equant LAN Access. The countries covered at launch are: Australia, Canada, Hong Kong, Italy, Singapore, U.K. and the U.S. DSL Access will be available in Germany by the end of Q1 and in France during Q2 with other countries added throughout 2003. Equants DSL Access service is the most widely available from any global managed service provider today.

Integrating small sites into data and IP VPNs is a challenge for multinational corporations, said Camille Mendler, research director with the Yankee Group. By extending DSL access into VPN services, Equant is offering a compelling solution.

Equants DSL Access service provides customer benefits, including:

Direct and secure connections between remote offices and Equants private network.
Always-on connections running at speeds of up to 1.5 Mbps.
Private network security eliminates need for complex and expensive encryption technology.
Extends managed services to small offices, such as retail outlets and service bureaus.
DSL Access is already in use by four customers at more than 300 locations. For example, a major multinational car manufacturer is piloting the service in the U.K. as a solution for connecting dealerships into its IP VPN. By providing high speed access to technical and product information for dealers, purchasers of new cars will be able to get an up-to-the-minute status on the build of their new vehicles, enabling last minute pre-production changes to their order improving customer choice, service and satisfaction.

Many of our customers have a number of small sites that require intermittent but fast access to an intranet, said Arjen Maarleveld, president of Products, Equant. Equants DSL Access was developed in direct response to customers requests for a cost-effective, managed service with always-on shared connections, through which they could increase business efficiency.

Built on industry-leading network technology from Cosine and managed Cisco customer premise routers, DSL Access provides the benefits of a managed network service environment. Equants DSL Access customers receive near-real time statistics, as well as hourly, daily, weekly and monthly reports detailing utilization of aggregated DSL traffic. These reports enable customers to plan capacity for optimum performance and to effectively manage costs. The reports are accessed online through Equants Web-based customer service portal, WebVision, along with comprehensive service quality and performance information on other Equant services.
