XBOX surges ahead

Announcement posted by Xbox 24 Oct 2003

Xbox is shaking up the Australian games industry by snapping up 32% of the next generation console market share during September, according to figures recently released by GfK Marketing Services Australia.

Sales of Xbox have grown 12% in the last financial quarter (July 1 September 30) compared to the same time last year, while Sonys Playstation 2 and Nintendos Gamecube have plunged by 8% and 15% respectively.

Xboxs explosive growth is also demonstrated in its games sales which have experienced growth far beyond their competitors in the last financial quarter. Xbox has experienced a staggering 154% increase in software sales compared to the same quarter in 2002.

Were definitely on a roll, says Xbox regional manager, David McLean. With the launch of Xbox Live, exclusive games titles, Music Mixer and the Christmas retail pack The Beast, Xbox is clearly the console of choice and will continue to be so over the holiday retail season.

Xboxs online gaming service Xbox Live has also reportedly achieved strong sales results in its first three weeks since launch with starter kits literally flying out the door, according to some retail outlets. The reaction has been strong to Live, says National Manager, Computers and Communications, Harvey Norman, Rod Orrock. Consumers have really jumped on board with this service, and its been hard to keep up with demand.

The Xbox Live service will be a key aspect in Xboxs sales drive over the next few months. As the first console based online video gaming service to hit the Australian market, Xbox Live provides a unified gaming arena, where players can compete against the rest of the world, meet with friends, talk in real-time, and choose from a huge range of games at launch 20 titles were Live-enabled with 50 expected by Christmas.

Xbox also expects this strong retail response to continue due to its diverse line up of games, with 300 games on shelf scheduled by Christmas. Consumer demand is also expected to be aided by a range of exclusive titles featuring Australian content including Project Gotham Racing 2, Top Spin and Amped 2.

Australians have really jumped on board with Xbox and increasingly, were catering to the entire family. With Live weve seen the Xbox transformed into the complete interactive home entertainment unit, so were confident this recent rise in consumer demand for Xbox is just the beginning, adds McLean.
