EMAIL Research Results Demonstrate Great Need for Corporations to Better Manage and Archive Electronic Communications

Announcement posted by Legato Systems Inc. 16 Apr 2003

More than Two-Thirds of Organisations Rely on Email for Financial Transactions, Yet Only One-Third Archive Data Despite Tightened Government Regulations
"From regulatory mandates to homeland security requirements to disaster recovery preparedness plans, businesses face enormous pressures to recover, retrieve and manage information and email in particular," said Amena Ali, vice president, Corporate Marketing, LEGATO Systems. "Combining these demands with the fact that most IT budgets remain flat, organisations are faced with a far more difficult decision on how to manage email. Customers are telling us they need a flexible, open and cost efficient email archiving and management system that will grow with their email requirements now and into the future."

The survey also demonstrated that 35 percent of those surveyed have lost emails due to a technical fault, virus or related problem and more than 50 percent of organizations have suffered monetary loss or business interruption due to email downtime. Further, 24 percent of organisations have been involved in disputes with customers or suppliers over email-based issues.

"The risks inherent in improper email management, including downtime, lost emails and potential disputes with customers should place email archiving, availability and protection right at the top of a CIO's list of priorities," said Michael Osterman, Principal & Founder, Osterman Research. "Never before have organisations been as dependent on email and electronic transactions and the need for effective email management will continue to grow as new government and industry regulations are enforced in the coming months. Beyond regulatory and other external requirements, organisations need to look at data archiving, protection
and storage as a driver for business growth and financial performance."

Randolph Kahn, Esq., co-author of Email Rules and Principal, of Kahn Consulting, an information management consulting firm, added, "The majority of businesses around the world depend on email to transact business, confirm orders, exchange information, submit regulatory filings, and more. At the same time, most do not have an effective management strategy or archiving policy in place. Before it's too late, companies need to get themselves on board with managing data for the
long term."
