Sprint Launches IP Network Services in New Zealand Company continues Asia Pacific network expansion

Announcement posted by Sprint 04 Oct 2002

Sprint (NYSE: FON) has entered the New Zealand marketplace by connecting the country to its global Internet Protocol (IP) network. This will position Sprint, one of the world's largest telecommunications companies, to offer IP services for multinational organisations, Internet Service Providers (ISPs) and carriers based in New Zealand.

Sprint Managing Director, Australia and New Zealand, David Eagle said the move is consistent with current market interest and Sprint's measured approach to international expansion.

"We've had an active interest in New Zealand for quite some time and judge it to be a vibrant market that would quickly prove a strategic location in Sprint's current Asia Pacific IP network," Mr Eagle said. "More recently,
the local market has been very receptive to the prospect of an entry by Sprint, and we're delighted to now meet this need in New Zealand.

"In addition to providing direct, high-speed access to US-based Internet content, this network expansion underscores Sprint's commitment to provide a single point of contact for our multinational customers."

Sprint's IP node was installed mid-September in Auckland. The node is strategically located in TNZ facilities in Auckland, capitalising on one of the best of local telecommunications infrastructures available.

Since embarking on a path two years ago to expand its network around the globe, Sprint has successfully deployed service nodes in key global business markets in Asia Pacific, Europe and Latin America.

The SprintLink IP service offerings in New Zealand will include:

* Internet Protocol Virtual Private Networks (IPVPNs) - Sprint's global IPVPN service allows companies to take advantage of the ubiquity of the Internet to connect with employees, customers, partners and suppliers worldwide. In supporting data, voice and video applications, it helps customers save on the high costs of traditional private networks without sacrificing quality or security.

* SprintLink CPE Routers - Sprint provides customer premise equipment (CPE) routers and will source, install, configure, repair and replace customer routers when necessary.

* Managed Network Service (MNS)- Sprint MNS, combined with SprintLink IP transport, allows customers to completely outsource the ongoing monitoring and configuration of the VPN devices comprising their network, so
they can focus on their core business instead of their networking equipment.

* Security Service - Sprint helps customers avoid network security breaches through firewall solutions, user authentication, antiviral software and Web filtering.

Sprint provides local enterprises, multinational companies, ISPs (Internet Service Providers) and carriers with a broad portfolio of voice, data and high-speed connectivity services that provide reach into most countries around the world. To meet the unprecedented demand for bandwidth and multiple network management services across the Asia-Pacific region, Sprint has recently upgraded its Asian backbone to include an STM-16 Pan-Asian Ring. Value-added services include global IPVPNs (Internet Protocol Virtual Private Networks), security solutions, multicasting and managed services.

Sprint also provides Frame Relay and ATM services and International Private Lines (IPLs) to its customers.
