Roy Morgan Research

TV2’s Big Bang Theory has topped the list of New Zealand’s most loved television programs, up from 2nd place in 2010. Big Bang Theory is closely followed by TV3’s Outrageous Fortune, ranked New Zealand’s 2nd most loved program (up from its 3rd place position last year).

According to the latest Roy Morgan Single Source data (August 2010 – July 2011), Big Bang Theory boasts the highest number of New Zealanders aged 14+ years who agree that they “really love this program”.

Big Bang Theory and Outrageous Fortune are followed by TV2’s Two and a Half Men in third place, which has been pushed out of its former #1 spot after a decrease in total number of “really love this program” fans.

One News at 6pm, Country Calendar, Top Gear and NCIS continue to be among New Zealand’s most loved TV programs, ranking 4th, 5th, 6th and 8th respectively (which is also nearly identical to their 2010 rankings).

As demonstrated in the following table, other major changes to the top 10 most loved programs in 2011 include TV2’s Shortland Street falling from its previously-held 7th place position to the number 10 spot, whilst TV2’s Grey’s Anatomy and TV3’s CSI: Crime Scene Investigation have dropped out of the top 10 altogether. These programs have been replaced by new entrants The Mentalist (TV2) and Criminal Minds (One), making their top 10 debut in the 7th and 9th positions, respectively.

Whilst Big Bang Theory is loved by both men and women (with 20% of men and 19% of women agreeing that they really love this program), it is interesting to note that the 2nd and 3rd most loved programs appear to mostly owe their rankings to either one gender or the other, particularly Two and a Half Men. In fact, apart from Big Bang Theory, One News at 6pm and Outrageous Fortune are the only other programs to appear in the top 10 ‘most loved’ TV programs for both men and women.

The following chart shows that the most loved television program among men is Big Bang Theory, closely followed by Top Gear then Two and a Half Men. Neither Top Gear nor Two and a Half Men, however, rank among the top 10 most loved programs for women.

The data also shows that New Zealand men love The Simpsons, Family Guy, 7 Days and Police Ten 7, whilst the crime/murder mystery genre (The Mentalist, Criminal Minds, Bones) and longstanding favourites such as Grey’s Anatomy, Shortland Street and Desperate Housewives are most loved by women.

The biggest mover in the last year was Big Bang Theory, which has shown the biggest increase in people who really love this program, whereas programs such as Two and a Half Men and Shortland Street showed a decrease in the number of New Zealanders who agree that they really love these programs.

Pip Elliott, Client Service Director – Roy Morgan Research says:

“In 2011 we’re seeing a reshuffle of the top three most loved TV programs, with ‘Big Bang Theory’ replacing ‘Two and a Half Men’ as New Zealand’s most loved TV show.

"Local production, ‘Outrageous Fortune’, is also a firm favourite, and in fact among New Zealand women it is the number one most loved TV show.

"Four out of the top 10 most loved TV programs in 2011 are local New Zealand productions. It’s great to see such support for home-grown product like ‘Country Calendar’ and perpetual favourite, Shortland Street.

"News programs don’t generally tend to rank highly as ‘love programs’, and yet ‘One News at 6pm’ is the exception to that rule, ranking among the top 10 most loved TV programs for both men and women.

"These results have implications for advertisers thinking beyond ratings to audience engagement, and who want to be involved with TV programs that garner loyal, engaged, committed viewers.”
