Australian visa restrictions and the need to tread lightly on financial servicesMEDIA COMMENT13 March 2013The Australian Federal Government’s proposed tightening of 457 visas could harm the nation’s financial services sector if it proceeds as it relies heavily on the flow of talent across Asia and the innovation that international workers bring to the Australian economy.Confusion abounds with the Federal Government arguing for tighter restrictions, whilst the NSW Government is urging for greater flexibility to attract more international talent into financial services - NSW’s biggest employment sector. The facts are Australia’s strict visa rules are already keeping highly skilled financial services professionals out of the country at a time when Australia needs more foreign talent to manage the increasingly global international funds management sector, for example.“Australia has the fourth largest fund management industry in the world and international expertise is vital to the growth and success of the industry” said eFinancialCareers Managing Director Asia Pacific, George McFerran.” “There is no doubt the current visa situation as it stands is restricting talent to Australia from Asia, Europe and the US, making Sydney and other capital centres less competitive. Any further restrictions would be a retrograde step, harming individual firms and the international reputation of the industry,” said Mr McFerran. “It needs to be recognised financial services is an international career and by further restricting visa classes for skilled migration, we’re hampering the flow of talent from Asia-pacific to Australia. This will make Sydney less competitive as a finance destination” added Mr McFerran. “In addition the move to tighten foreign worker employment opportunities in Australia may accelerate the shift of certain functions overseas” Mr McFerran said. Australian employers are concerned that the proposed new measures will limit their ability to select top talent from a global pool of candidates. “Restricting access to highly skilled foreign professionals, and the innovation they bring, could also prove a challenge. It will need to be managed to avoid harming productivity at the same time that the Government is trying to increase it” Mr McFerran said.“It’s odd because the Asian Century Whitepaper the Federal Government released recently was all about opening up trade and labour flow across Asia-pacific. Yet the current moves to tighten skilled migrant visas goes against this. We would urge the Government to tread lightly when it comes to financial services” said Mr McFerran.**ENDS**About eFinancialCareerseFinancialCareers, a Dice Holdings, Inc. service, is the leading global career site network for professionals working in the investment banking, asset management and securities industries. With a growing Mexico HIV population of 200,000 and in the US, the CDC estimates one in every 52 Hispanics/Latinos out 48.4 million will be diagnosed with HIV in their lifetime.
John Majewski, retired Founder & CEO of Narhex Life Sciences Limited (“NLS”), has negotiated an exclusive technology license from NLS for the territories of Mexico and the USA with the intention of registering Australia’s first New generation small molecule boosted protease inhibitor treatment for people living with HIV in those regions, through a new corporate entity, Four Guardians Life Sciences (“Four Guardians”)
John’s clear objective is one of creating a profitable company that can grow to save human life. The company’s strategy to introduce a new generation boosted small molecule protease inhibitor combination treatment, for a market that until now receives older generation antiviral treatments that are no longer the physician’s choice in the more lucrative western markets. John views this approach as possible game changer for second world counties like Mexico who need first world antiviral treatments but cannot afford western pricing.
Under John’s direction until his retirement in 2005 the Narhex Life Sciences undertook ongoing research programs for the development of this new generation protease inhibitor and successfully completed Phase I and Phase IIa clinical trials programs. The reason he has now negotiated an exclusive technology license is because of two significant milestone advances subsequently made by NLS with this new generation protease inhibitor, and the significant support he has received from his Mexican CRO partner and the Mexican Ministry of Health;
The costly & complex scale up solutions required to move from laboratory bench chemistry syntheses to producing Clinical trial drug in large commercial batch GMP manufacturing has been completed. Proving up in second Phase I clinical trials a combination of this protease inhibitor into a booster drug with significant reduced pill burden as a result of a possible 70% reduction in daily dosage amount. Mexican Ministry of Health Registration (MoH), means a far less clinical trial cost to MoH registration translating to a much shorter time to market.
By following the same path as used by the big Pharmaceutical companies (*1),, Four Guardians plan is to complete the remaining Phase IIb/III clinical trials with its appointed Mexican CRO drug registration partner, in order to register with the Mexican Health Department (MoH), a new generation “boosted” protease inhibitors requiring dosage only once or twice a day. This reduces pill burden and lesson side effects including lipid and metabolic disturbances.
The Mexican Ministry of Health reviewed the clinical data second Phase I clinical trial results in testing an improved enteric coating dosage formulation and earlier Phase I/IIa clinical trial results. Four Guardians Clinical Research Organization (CRO) has, with involvement from the Mexican health department, submitted a Phase IIb & III clinical trial program and budget plan that will combine both clinical trials into one thus shortening time to market to an estimated two and a half years.
On achieving registration in Mexico the company’s objective to grow to service around 60,000 patient’s annual treatment across the Mexican and cross boarder US markets achieving an estimated annual income in excess of US$150 million within the first few years commencing operations.
Four Guardians is seeking to raise US$8.0 million through issuing seed capital to suitable investor groups to fund completion of fast track Mexican clinical trials, drug registration and initial commercialisation.
This is compared to a cost of circa US$80 million and a time in excess of five years if the company’s strategy was to attempt securing the same drug registration with the US FDA.
Mexican and US Hispanics/Latinos HIV population – Datamonitor (US) estimates that the current generation of Protease Inhibitors (“PI”) account for 25% or US$1.5 billion of all HIV antiviral sales. Currently the available large Pill burden, however of the older 1st generation PI, has been an outstanding issue affecting the PI class. The frequency of dosage prescribed in second world countries not only affects patient quality of life and ability to adhere to their recommended regimen, but it also continually reminds them of their condition.
In the US the average annual wholesale cost of treatment for the commercially available for 1st world class protease inhibitors is in the range of US$5,000 to US$45,000 per patient. This opens up an opportunity for small Biotech companies like Four Guardians Life Sciences Limited to replace old PI’s markets with the latest boosted combo Protease Inhibitor treatment offerings that are still very profitable but more affordable.
Mexico and the USA Latin market represent an excellent opportunity to service a large and mostly forgotten anti-HIV/AIDS market. The 2008 USAID/Mexico estimated an HIV population of about 200,000 (150.000- 310,000). Then there is a larger more affluent Latin market of cross boarder patients looking for less expensive protease inhibitor booster drugs from North America and Latin America with a total HIV population of about 2.9 million.
Cross-border population mobility is also a factor in HIV/AIDS transmission in Mexico, including immigration from Central America and the influx of those returning from migrant work in the United States, has contributed to the spread of the epidemic, particularly in rural parts of the country. (USAID)
USA Hispanics/Latinos population is 48.4 million (US Census Bureau July 2009) Hispanics/Latinos are also disproportionately affected by the AIDS epidemic in America. It is estimated that 1 in every 52 = 930,000 Hispanics/Latinos will be diagnosed with HIV in their lifetime.
In New York City, where 40% of all households are made up of Latinos born outside the US, the majority of health and civil society organizations cite a lack of bilingual and culturally sensitive HIV and AIDS services as a key obstacle to dealing with the city's epidemic. HIV was the fifth leading cause of death for Hispanics/Latinos aged 35–44 and the sixth leading cause of death for Hispanics/Latinos aged 25–34 in the US in 2007. It does not require a transfer agent or bank.Senders can conveniently perform a transaction from their mobile phone at any time and require only the mobile number of the recipient in order to send money. Recipients do not need a bank account, do not need to wait for the funds to arrive or do not need to travel to or locate a transfer agent to access their funds. The Recipient can access the funds instantly and securely from their mobile wallet directly or depending upon the region may withdraw funds in cash.mHITs is one of the first mobile wallet operators in the western world to provide this service. For the first time, people living in Australia will be able to send money instantly and conveniently by mobile phone to their relatives and friends living in Nepal by having funds credited immediately to their eSewa mobile wallet account. In some developing markets, families and communities rely on money sent by relatives abroad to pay for essentials such as food, clothing and medicines. For more information on the mHITs Remit service see www.mhits.com.au/send-money.mobile international remittanceMobile technology lowers the cost of remittances as it removes the need for physical points of presence and ensures a timely and secure method of transaction. The World Bank estimates that reducing remittance commission charges by 2-5% could increase the flow of formal remittances by 50-70%. Reducing the cost of sending each individual remittance encourages the delivery of lower value remittances, at values far less than today’s average transfer of US$200.Mobile communications can also drive significant growth of the formal remittance market and has the potential to vastly improve and transform access to remittance funds for people in developing countries. The GSMA forecasts that the formal global remittance market could grow from around US$300 billion today to over US$1 trillion in five years with the help of mobile communications. For more information visit www.gsma.com.about mHITsmHITs (pronounced Em-HITS) is an Australian based developer and operator of mobile payment services. Perth, Western Australia. May 9th 2012.
GPS tracking provider, Myionu, today announced a million dollar initiative to provide subsidised GPS tracking equipment and services. The subsidy will be made available to every school and registered disabled person in Australia.
Following the successful launch of Myionu, Paul Delaney says, ‘although we already provide a cost effective GPS tracking solution, we wanted to help enable every school and disabled person to have subsidised access to this technology. The subsidy (funded by Myionu), will provide up to a 40% reduction in hardware and service fees.’
The Myionu service delivers real time location based data across a range of devices and smart phones, providing detailed location mapping (which can be viewed from any PC, tablet or smart phone) and alerts in the event of specific actions; which include duress, entry or exit of pre-set boundaries, speeding, along with a range of additional options. The alerts appear on the computer screen as well as sending an automated email to any number of recipients.
The purpose of providing these subsidies for schools will enable them to provide parents with the ability to access a secure portal to view the location of the school bus which their child is travelling on. From a security perspective, the school is able to limit access to only those parents who need to view this data. This also provides the school with live tracking and management tools to assist with their duty of care.
For the disabled, our technology could provide additional assistance by providing live locations and a range of support alerts, for example where a person leaves or enters specific areas, such as home, work, etc. or is need of help.
About Myionu.
Myionu is a division of Perth based AffinityOne Pty Ltd, who have been supplying GPS tracking and security products in Australia since 2006. The family owned business has provided GPS tracking solutions to the Corporate Sector and now has expanded their product range to include this developing requirement. A recent study from ABI Research suggests that ‘GPS personal tracking devices and applications are forecast to grow with a CAGR of 40%, with both markets breaking $1 billion in 2017.’ Myionu is positioned at the forefront of this emerging market and are looking to become Australia’s leading provider within this sector.
COMMUNITY ORGANISATIONS JOIN FIGHT AGAINST HOMOPHOBIA2012-05-07T15:02:04Zcommunity-organisations-join-fight-against-homophobiaSydney, May 8 - Several
Gay and Lesbian supporting community organisations are marking this May 17th
as International Day Against Homophobia (IDAHO) with a new campaign, targeted
at engaging members of the community to become allies to battle homophobia and
transphobia.
The new campaign, which asks members of the public to make a
‘pledge’ to speak out against prejudice, discrimination, intolerance and hate
aims to provide hope for Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, Intersex, Queer
and Questioning (LGBTIQQ) young people.
“When I heard about
the Be My Ally campaign, I
immediately knew I had to move quickly to get in touch with the organisers
(IDAHO-NSW),” said Rami Mandow, Chairman of The Community Brave Foundation – a
new Foundation which aims at reducing online bullying, homophobia, transphobia
and youth suicide. “We wanted to partner with IDAHO to deliver a community
message, but we didn’t want to be restricted to our small circles.”
“So we sent a few emails out amongst our networks and asked
a bunch of community organisations to join us,” said Mandow. “Before we knew
it, everyone loved the idea and was right on board. We’ve got the teams from It
Gets Better Australia, Sydney Gay & Lesbian Mardi Gras, Twenty10, Guide to
Gay, Star Observer and the Sydney Gay & Lesbian Business Association all
partaking in this brilliant community message. It’s so simple, yet so
effective.”
The Be My Ally
Idea is the brainchild of Stuart Garske, after having worked three years with
the community for IDAHO. The aim of the project is to continue on the
conversation about homophobia and transphobia beyond the May 17day
of recognition for IDAHO and ensure that communities, schools and workplaces
become more tolerant and accepting.
“Like many of our fellow community organisations, we have a
strong message when it comes to homophobia and transphobia. And that message is
that it will not be tolerated anywhere in society,” said Mandow. “That’s why we
want to become allies with so many people in our communities to ensure that we
are there to help provide resources, tools, information and direction if young
people are being subjected to homophobia or transphobia.”
“As all of us Community Organisations launch the campaign, I
expect to see a whole lot more come on board. Even with the few teasers that we
have released through Community Brave, we’ve had four organisations let us know
they are interested,” said Mandow. “Based on this, we are hoping that this will
trigger a chain reaction of recognition events around the nation to get people
to address homophobia and transphobia when it occurs. Self-policing if it can
be called this, both online and offline.”
IDAHO NSW is
a community based initiative made up of individuals, services and organisations
dedicated to addressing homophobia, transphobia, intersexphobia, as well as
supporting equal rights for LGBTIQQ people. Founded by Stuart Garske in 2012.
The
Community Brave Foundation is a community volunteer program which has aims to
reduce online bullying, homophobia, transphobia and youth suicide using social
media as a tool to communicate with young people providing resources,
information and referrals. Established in 2012, Community Brave has released
several videos featuring members of the public at Mardi Gras and are about to
release a series of videos featuring Australian celebrities.

Use of the mobile phone as a payment device is acknowledged as a logical payment solution for the unbanked as people in developing countries often lack the formal identity requirements that traditional banking services require such as a birth certificate, formal address or regular employment or income. The lack of bank branches, limited number of ATM’s, limited access to the Internet and the general low level of financial literacy in developing countries are contrasted by the large-scale uptake of mobile phones in these same markets. this week the
US Postal Service announced it would close more than half its mail-processing
centres in a $3bn cost-cutting drive, resulting in 28,000 job losses http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-us-canada-16037668
Docsaway is a PDF-based solution that is ideal for businesses wishing to
automate or outsource the mailing of their paper-based documents from a number
of locations throughout the world. It allows businesses to have the sincerity
and genuine nature of a letter, without the fuss of actually going to the post
office.
Traditional
post offices are often now viewed as outdated, slow and costly. Posting a
letter involves not only a financial outlay, but also the cost of personal
time. The efficiency and reliability of the postal service is no longer
guaranteed and people are looking to other methods for communication.
“It
is a shame to see such an institution as the post office clouded with doubt and
uncertainty. Docsaway bridges the gap between the need for efficiency and the
personal nature of receiving an actual letter,” Mr Harris said.
“I recognised the
potential for an affordable mail service that combined traditional mail with
the speed of the internet at a time when many of my friends were without an
internet connection,” he explained.
The
post office’s problems stems from pressure on revenue and costs. As any
computer user knows, the internet has revolutionised the way people and
businesses communicate. As a result we are sending far less conventional printed
mail.
“We’ve been sending paper-based documents via our mail services every
day since 2003. Our systems rarely miss a beat - we check our servers every five
minutes to keep our reliability promise,” Mr Harris offered as the solution.
“We
are keen to increase awareness of our services in the US market and we believe Docsaway
with its cost savings is the change US businesses are looking for,” Mr Harris said.
The
US postal service is currently running a campaign titled, “Save the U.S. Post Office:
Write A Letter”. Quite simply, the more
letters written, the more chance the post office has of surviving – and who
doesn’t like receiving a letter (as long as it’s good news)?
Docsaway does not
discourage people from writing and sending letters, but instead offers a solution
to maintain this art in an efficient way via the internet.
“Write a letter, send it
through Docsaway via our safe and secure service, and still embrace traditional
postal and mailing services,” Mr Harris urged businesses to do.
Docsaway, together
with L-Mail, operate collectively from 29 locations throughout the
world. Together, Docsaway and L-Mail form the boutique internet consultancy QiQ Communications.
L-Mail is an
HTML-based solution providing the necessary tools to help turn an email into a
letter.

Point Trading’s case against Elbit Systems and ITL to remain in the Australian Federal Court2011-11-28T00:00:00Zpoint-trading-s-case-against-elbit-systems-and-itl-to-remain-in-the-australian-federal-courtFaxtech Pty Ltd, trading as Point Trading, has successfully prevented ITL Optronics Ltd and Elbit Systems Limited
(NASDAQ: ESLT, TASE: ESLT) from staying the Court proceeding it is running against
the two companies in the Federal Court in Australia.
ITL and Elbit had attempted to stay the proceeding in
order to have part of the dispute heard in the High Court in England, however the
Court ruled that the case could and should be heard solely in Australia. Although certain aspects of the dispute could
be heard in either Australia or England, there was no doubt that the claim against
ITL and Elbit for misleading or deceptive conduct under the Australian Consumer
Law could only be heard in the Federal Court in Australia.
The Court ordered ITL and Elbit to pay Point Trading’s
costs of the application, and ITL has now discontinued the Court proceeding it
had commenced in England.
Point Trading CEO, Avner Klein said “We are very happy
with the Court’s decision and we look forward to prosecuting our case against ITL
and Elbit and protecting Australian jobs.”
Point Trading alleges that Elbit and its subsidiary ITL
have made serious misrepresentations to the Australian Department of Defence in
regard to Point Trading’s exclusive rights to supply the Mini N/SEAS night
vision monocular, N/CROS binoculars and other ITL products in Australia and New
Zealand. Point Trading claims that the
misrepresentations constitute misleading or deceptive conduct, and will ask the
Court for an injunction to stop Elbit and ITL from continuing to make
misleading statements about Point Trading’s rights.
Point Trading alleges that Elbit has attempted to
circumvent the contract ITL signed with Point Trading by signalling to the
Department of Defence to stop purchasing from Point Trading and to deal direct
with ITL. Point Trading alleges that in
doing so Elbit and ITL have not only ignored the terms of the contract ITL
signed with Point Trading in 2010, but have damaged the business and reputation
of a long standing Australian company and jeopardised highly skilled Australian
manufacturing jobs.
The Court has now set a timetable for pleadings,
discovery and evidence, with the next directions hearing on 14 February 2012.
The
judgment can be found at: http://www.austlii.edu.au/au/cases/cth/FCA/2011/1320.html.

The eBook is also suitable for every Australian family who wants to involve their children in developing environmental life skills in their own backyard.
The special edition is the brainchild of Ron Smith, a Melbourne based publicist who co-authored the eBook with Bob Winters, one of Australia's leading sustainability educators.

This led to the creation of this special edition and fundraising program in support of Alzheimer’s Australia Vic’s Younger Onset Dementia program."
