The PRWIRE Press Releaseshttp://2013-03-04T05:17:00ZREACHOUT.COM CELEBRATES 15 YEARS SUPPORTING AUSTRALIA’S YOUNG PEOPLE THROUGH DIFFICULT TIMES2013-03-04T05:17:00Zreachout-com-celebrates-15-years-supporting-australia-s-young-people-through-difficult-times Sydney, 4 March 2013: ReachOut.com, Australia’s leading online youth mental health service, has celebrated 15 years supporting young people across Australia through tough times.
The milestone was marked at an event at Paddington Town Hall in Sydney on 1 March, where young people from across Australia joined ReachOut.com CEO Jonathan Nicholas and Peter Garrett MP to celebrate the groundbreaking online support and resources offered by the service.
ReachOut.com was launched in 1998 by the Inspire Foundation, which aims to help young people be happy and well. ReachOut.com was the world’s first youth mental health service, connecting young people with support and resources in an environment that was familiar and comfortable – the online world.
75 per cent of all mental health issues start before the age of 25, and in Australia, one in four young people experiences a mental health issue, with suicide the highest cause of death among young people.
Jonathan Nicholas, CEO of Inspire Foundation, said the service continued to build on the success of the past 15 years, consistently pushing the boundaries to connect with young people on their own terms:
“In the past 15 years we’ve continued to innovate as technology and communications trends have evolved. By placing young people at the centre of everything we do, we have ensured ReachOut.com remains relevant and accessible to Australian youth through a variety of platforms, including apps, online games and discussion forums.
“The accessibility of support for youth mental health in a non-confrontational and comfortable environment is critical. In the past 12 months alone, almost 1.4 million Australians visited ReachOut.com, with 20 per cent of our visitors accessing information through mobile devices.”
The anniversary event also marked the culmination of ReachOut.com’s inaugural short film competition, where entrants aged 18-24 were challenged to create a 30-60 second video for the website that shows what young people can do to keep themselves mentally fit and healthy.
The Honourable Peter Garrett AM MP congratulated the three finalists on their short film submissions:
“I am extremely impressed by the quality of the videos submitted by young people from all across Australia. A key to ReachOut’s continued effectiveness and longevity is down to putting young people at the centre of everything they do, and this competition is just another example of this.”
21 shortlisted entrants, including the winner and two finalists, will continue to work with ReachOut.com, attending a two-day ideas generation workshop, and join the ReachOut.com Film Crew where they will be paid to develop new content for the website over the coming year.At 19 years of age, Zak Norris from Wanneroo was awarded first place with his highly praised Balloons short film. Zak submitted his video three days after hearing about the competition on ReachOut.com’s Facebook page.
“I was quite stunned, but I feel so privileged to have won. ReachOut is such an important organisation for young people, and I am just thrilled that I’ve been able to help emphasise to my peers that services like ReachOut are out there to support them,” said Zak.
Brendan Cain from Kempsey, New South Wales, gained second place while Terry Taplin from Mandurah, Western Australia, was awarded third place.
CEO Jonathan Nicholas said the young filmmakers would be making an invaluable contribution to the ongoing evolution of ReachOut.com:
“It is by connecting directly with Australia’s young people that we continue to remain relevant and engaging. The creativity shown by our young filmmakers is truly inspiring and I’m looking forward to hearing more of their ideas and ultimately seeing the powerful content they will be producing for our ReachOut.com and for young people in need across Australia.”

help from a hypnotherapists because they think that they cannot afford
their fees. Fees are rated by the number of hours spent per session in a hypnotherapy counseling. The Australian Psychological Society (APS)
has published their preferred fees per session thus the Gold Coast hypnotherapy (member of APS) has been mandated to follow the
standardized and recommended fee by the society. The fee ranges from
$122 (1-30 minutes) to $417 (up to 120 minutes). These fees are set to
regulate the amount of fee collected or billed by the hypnotherapists of
entire Australia. Some clinics accept health care insurances and
medi-care rebates for a consultation. The client can avail discounts or
rebates if they consulted to a clinic which is a member of the
Australian Psychological Society. Some government-operated or funded hypnotherapy Gold Coast services are free or low cost. For example, your
consultation may be covered if you are a victim of crime, or have been
injured in the workplace or in a traffic accident. The fee may vary from
one clinic to another, some may lower it some may have some extra
charges because they have some extra approach or maybe they just don't
follow the said recommended fees to be imposed on their clients. Psychology is a fast growing profession due to lack of supply for hypnotherapists and high demand, due to this economic condition there is a
high risk factor when it comes to clients who wants to seek a
professional psychological intervention. To lessen the said risk the
Australian government made a move to this issue; they have imposed a law
about licensing a psychologist. There are certain requirements that
must be achieved before having the tile of a psychologist; you must
finish an APAC approved four year degree sequence in psychology followed
by either: a two year master's program or two years supervised by a
registered psychologist.Endorsement within a specific area of practice
like counseling, Clinical, Neuropsychological, Organisational, Forensic,
or Educational hypnotherapy is needed. Most of the Gold Coast
psychologists are licensed by the government and are also a member of
the Australian Psychological Society making you that they are qualified
and really professional practitioners of hypnotherapy. This ensures you
quality service when you step into their clinics and seek professional
help with your problems. Even their clinics are accredited by the
government thus making you sure that any misuse or malpractice of their
profession may hold them liable for the damages caused to youFor more information visit http://www.personalsolutions.com.au/hypnotherapy.htmlIt’s World Hearing Voices Day!!2012-09-14T01:48:44Zit-s-world-hearing-voices-day14
September 2012: The Hearing Voices
Network Australia, together with INTERVOICE (International Community for
Hearing Voices), today celebrates a growing awareness that voice hearing is
part of the diversity of human experience and that people can hear voices and
be healthy.
World Hearing Voices Day has been
celebrated since 2006 to challenge negative attitudes towards people who hear
voices, de-stigmatise the experience and raise awareness of the issues facing
the estimated 4% of women and men and children who hear voices across the
world.
There is a common misperception that all voice hearing is a
symptom of medical illness, while many voice hearers are able to live with
their voices and consider them a positive (or at lease manageable) part of
their lives.
Hearing Voices Network Australia (HVNA) works to promote recovery, acceptance and
education, and provides an opportunity for people who hear voices to meet and
talk, sharing view points and strategies to support each other.
Instead of the traditional practice of ignoring
the voices, the HVNA encourages people to talk and understand voices.

FDA meeting on BRC’s Depression Treatment Test2012-07-04T01:47:35Zfda-meeting-on-brc-s-depression-treatment-test
3 July 2012
FDA meeting on BRC’s Depression Treatment Test
BRC met with the FDA (June 28) to discuss our Pre-IDE submission in regards to the
company’s test to predict optimized treatment for Depression based on our
international iSPOT study.
This was a positive meeting which addressed the issues previously raised by the
FDA. Significantly, the FDA considered a de novo pathway as a possible pathway for
our submission. The implication of this being typically less complexity and shorter
approval times as compared to a PMA submission.
As such, we continue to believe we are on track to develop and obtain FDA
marketing clearance in the United States for a personalized predictive test in
Depression.
Our next steps include filing a Pre-IDE supplement to clarify the pivotal validation
study (expected within the next two months), this laying the ground for us to begin
working on our final submission.
About iSPOT
The International Study to Predict Optimized Treatment (‘iSPOT’) is a Landmark
Personalized Medicine study that is identifying objective tests to predict treatment
response.
Depression is the leading cause of disability in the US and is one of its most costly
illnesses (15m affected, 85m clinical visits, $83bn cost and 212 million
antidepressant prescriptions in the US per annum). Current medication selection
relies on a trial and error approach. The iSPOT value proposition is to identify
objective tests that predict treatment response and more efficiently match which
antidepressant is best for a particular individual.
iSPOT is a practical trial mirroring routine clinical practice and patients are
randomized to Lexapro, Zoloft and Effexor XR (which represent around 40% of the
antidepressants currently on sale in the US). It is being conducted at 20 sites globally
and commenced in 2007.

Give Yourself a Good Night’s Sleep with SlumberTop Memory Foam Topper2012-06-21T00:32:47Zgive-yourself-a-good-night-s-sleep-with-slumbertop-memory-foam-topperYou will find a surprising percentage of
the population has problems getting a good night’s sleep. This can be for a
myriad of reasons, but unfortunately a bad night’s sleep can have an equally
myriad of negative results. Getting a good night’s sleep is as important to
your health and wellbeing as regular exercise and a healthy diet. It has been
ascertained and proved that REM or rapid eye movement sleep is the most
essential element of your sleep cycle and it can take as long as 90 minutes to
reach that part of the cycle.
Tossing and turning cuts into the amount of
REM sleep that you get every night which means that you will wake up feeling
tired as you have not recharged your body during your night’s sleep. This can
impair your mental performance and increase your stress levels, so it becomes
even more imperative that we try to assist in every way to give ourselves a
great night’s sleep.
Choosing a memory foam mattress pad
from SlumberTop may be one of the most important decisions you make for your
body and your general wellbeing, plus you never need to wake up with an aching
back again. Considering the huge benefits of a memory SlumberTop you should
make up your mind to buy one, sooner than later, so here are some important
statistics for you to make the process simpler.
Memory foam is made in various densities
and this is an important decision as a low density does not provide adequate
support whereas too high a density is often too firm and more costly.
SlumberTop is made of the best quality materials available, utilising the
latest technology coupled with quality Japanese materials, being superior and
more affordable than other brands.
Now that you have decided to purchase one
of these fantastic toppers, will you need a 50mm or a 75mm topper? Their 50mm toppers
are suitable for people who have a mattress that is too firm and need a softer
comfort layer to conform to their body shape. They are also suitable for people
who prefer to sleep on their stomach. The 75mm topper is great for side and
back sleepers. It is also recommended for people weighing over95kg and is actually
the number one choice for memory
foam mattress toppers. Butterfly Foundation is bringing to Australia Carolyn Costin, a leading expert in
eating disorders residential treatment, to help advocate for a broader range of
treatment options in Australia.
A
recent Australian review of studies has indicated that up to 15 per cent of
women will need clinical intervention for an eating disorder, at some point in
their life. Butterfly’s CEO Christine Morgan said that eating disorders can
affect people of all ages, but the peak time of onset for anorexia and bulimia
is in the teenage years.
“Eating
disorders can have a major impact not just on general health, but on young
people’s growth and development, relationships, school results and future
career prospects. They are very complex and highly individual, with different
people requiring distinct treatment models and different levels of care,” Christine
Morgan said. “It is essential that Australians have access to the full range of
best practice treatment options in order to give everyone the best chance of
recovery.”
“Eating
disorders have the highest lifetime mortality rate of any mental illness -
twelve times higher for women suffering from an eating disorder than for those unaffected.
Having access to a full continuum of care is essential to effectively treat all
cases, and will reduce the long term impacts and costs for sufferers, their
families and the wider community.”
Carolyn
Costin is the founder of the successful Monte Nido
residential eating disorder treatment centre in California. Her clinical
practice expertise is highly regarded, with 30 years of experience in
outpatient, day treatment, hospital and residential care. She has also written
a number of highly respected books on the subject, including “The Eating
Disorder Sourcebook” and “8 keys to Recovery From An Eating Disorder”.
Having
recovered from an eating disorder herself, Carolyn is keen to help promote
discussion on best-practice treatment methods. “We must make the treatments fit
the patients, rather than the other way around. For example, some patients who
could be better served at a residential treatment centre instead of a hospital
are currently unable to access that option in Australia,” she said.
Ms
Costin said residential treatment offers care that deals with both physical and
mental health needs. “The residential setting gives patients access to medical staff,
but in a home-like setting that allows us to work through some of the psychological
issues in a close-to-real-life framework.”
“Australia
currently has no residential programs for eating disorders and we hope that
Carolyn’s visit will help focus attention on this, building awareness and momentum
for a wider range of treatment options,” Christine Morgan said.
“The
Butterfly Foundation believes that an integrated continuum of care should be
publicly available to support people with eating disorders in Australia,
including community-based and outpatient care, day programs, residential
centres and inpatient services.”
Carolyn
Costin will present workshops in state capitals, offering advice and assistance
for parents, caregivers, health and community professionals. Further workshop
details are attached below.

beyondblue launches new resources to help health professionals identify and treat depression in pregnant women and new mums2012-04-23T22:33:36Zbeyondblue-launches-new-resources-to-help-health-professionals-identify-and-treat-depression-in-pregnant-women-and-new-mumsPostnatal depression affects one in seven new mothers and almost one in 10 pregnant women
experiences antenatal depression. Anxiety disorders are believed to be even more common.
Today, the Minister for Mental Health, The Hon. Mark Butler launches a new set of free
beyondblue information resources aimed at primary care health professionals, including maternal,
child and family health nurses, to help them detect and discuss depression, anxiety and other mental
health problems with pregnant women and new mothers.
The resources are based on the NHMRC-approved, Clinical Practice Guidelines beyondblue
developed in 2011 for the treatment of depression and related disorders of anxiety, bipolar
disorder and puerperal psychosis in the perinatal period.
In addition, beyondblue has undertaken research with General Practitioners, obstetricians,
midwives and maternal, child and family health nurses about their perceptions, experiences,
responses and perceived barriers to detecting, diagnosing and responding to antenatal and
postnatal depression and anxiety.
beyondblue CEO Kate Carnell AO said: “Health professionals are asking for reliable and
accessible information and training on mental health disorders during the perinatal period. There
are many health professionals in this field who are at the frontline and are in a good position to
recognise and respond to women presenting with depression and anxiety, and we rely on them to
refer these women to their GPs for treatment.”
The latest Depression Monitor survey, conducted every two years by beyondblue, shows that 20
per cent of the population believe that postnatal depression is a normal part of life, while 39 per
cent said they believed depression to be a normal part of pregnancy.
beyondblue Deputy CEO and General Manager of the Perinatal program, Dr Nicole Highet
said: “It is not normal to be depressed during pregnancy. Our research tells us that around 75 per
cent of Australians think that both pregnant women and new mothers should be checked for
signs of depression as they are currently screened for other problems that might occur, such as
diabetes or high blood pressure.
“These new resources will provide health professionals with easily accessible information about
depression, anxiety and related disorders during pregnancy and the first year following birth. We
hope that this will result in more women being checked, more symptoms being detected and more
women getting the help they need,” she said.
Ms Carnell said: “This is important not only for the women, but their families too. Research has
linked PND to higher rates of emotional, cognitive and behavioural problems in children which
can persist through their teenage years. It is imperative that women who are showing signs of
depression and anxiety are treated quickly and effectively in a non-stigmatising, caring
environment.”
The new resources complement a free, accredited online training program which is also based on the
Guidelines and which almost 2,500 health professionals are undertaking to improve their ability to
recognise, treat and manage these conditions in pregnant women and new mothers.St. Gregory Retreat Center Uses Brain Resource’s MyBrainSolutions-Clinical Tools for Addiction Recovery2012-04-09T19:51:31Zst-gregory-retreat-center-uses-brain-resource-s-mybrainsolutions-clinical-tools-for-addiction-recoverySt. Gregory Retreat Center Uses

National Close the Gap Day, Remote Area Health Corps (RAHC) is proud to
announce that it has already filled another 500 short-term health professional
placements in remote Indigenous communities across the Northern Territory (NT)
this financial year as part of the effort to Close the Gap in Indigenous health
outcomes.
RAHC was
established in late 2008 to recruit urban-based health professionals, General
Practitioners (GPs), Registered Nurses/Midwives, Oral Health and Allied Health
professionals to provide primary health care on short-term, paid placements in
remote Indigenous communities in the NT.
RAHC
Chairman, Dr Tony Austin AM says “I’m delighted to announce Dr Chris Hampshire,
a GP from inner-city Sydney with a passion for Indigenous health, is our 500th
placement this financial year bringing our total placements since our launch in
October 2008 to well over 1400”.
Dr Hampshire
is working alongside the dedicated local health centre staff at the Pintubi
Homelands Health Service in the remote community of Kintore (Walungurra) some
530 km to the west of Alice Springs.
Dr Austin
says “I would like to express my appreciation and congratulations to the many outstanding
health professionals who have been a part of this important milestone and
continue to work to help Close the Gap. I would also like to recognise the
tremendous support provided by our stakeholders such as the Department of
Health and Aboriginal Medical Services Alliance of the NT (AMSANT) and the
health services across Australia and their staff who are so generous in
supporting RAHC staff to achieve successful placements.”
Urban-based
health professionals who want to make a difference are encouraged to get
involved now and visit the RAHC website (www.rahc.com.au) to register their interest.
They are also invited to complete our free
online clinical e-learning modules in remote and Indigenous health and acquire
CPD points.RAHC supports
health professionals throughout their placements with high quality pre-deployment
cultural and clinical orientation programs and 24/7 support while on
placements.
RAHC
is funded by the Australian Government through the Office for Aboriginal and
Torres Strait Islander Health (OATSIH) under the Expanding Health Service
Delivery Initiative (EHSDI). EHSDI funding finishes June 30, 2012 and RAHC is
