The PRWIRE Press Releaseshttp://2013-05-16T01:17:00ZCompuware Extends APMaaS Platform With dynaTrace Real User Monitoring to Deliver Industry's Most Powerful User Experience Management Solution2013-05-16T01:17:00Zcompuware-extends-apmaas-platform-with-dynatrace-real-user-monitoring-to-deliver-industry-s-most-powerful-user-experience-management-solutionCompuware Corporation (Nasdaq:CPWR), the technology performance company delivering a new generation of APM, announced today the convergence of dynaTracePurePath® Technology and the Gomez Performance Network, creating the industry's most powerful User Experience Management (UEM) solution. Compuware now offers the industry's only APMaaS solution that provides a complete UEM offering, including real-user, synthetic, third-party service monitoring and business impact analysis. Compuware's APMaaS delivery model, auto-instrumentation and single-click to root cause diagnostics for both real user and synthetic transactions provides the deepest and broadest insight into application performance with the fastest time-to-value.
Compuware APMaaS is the only solution that enables organisations to optimise user experience, manage performance, availability and service levels from a unified real-user and synthetic perspective, all within a single on-demand platform for fast and easy deployment.
"EMA's extensive research on User Experience Management shows that in a growing number of IT environments, UEM needs to address not just application performance, but capacity planning and business impact, while also shortening development and testing cycles," said Dennis Drogseth, Vice President at Enterprise Management Associates. "With APMaaS, Compuware has brought together web and mobile application performance, business impact, user behaviour, and global ecosystem interdependencies into a unified, on-demand platform. This sets Compuware apart in a marketplace where fragmentation and clutter are still the norm."
Compuware APMaaS provides a single platform for managing performance, availability and service levels across web, mobile and cloud applications and sets a new bar for modern user experience management that includes:
Real User Monitoring: Complete view of application performance and actual end user experience for all users, browsers, devices and geographies. Understands and quantifies "visits" for expanded use-cases such as help desk. Automatically identifies and monitors all landing pages for better SEO and measures every transaction, including JavaScript/AJAX page actions, mobile tap and swipe, 24/7 in production.
Synthetic Monitoring: Provides an "outside-in" perspective of web, mobile and cloud application availability and service-levels. Identifies when key pages and transactions are slow or unavailable from multiple geographies around the world before customers are impacted. With PurePath® Technology, drill inline into transaction anomalies for faster problem resolution.
Third-Party Services: Measures the performance of all third-party services like CDNs, ads, social media and video and enables companies to instantly determine if a problem's root cause is internal or due to a specific service provider. Capture sessions for off-line analysis with third-party provider.
Business Impact: Quantifies the impact of application performance on real-user experience, customer satisfaction and business results. Track real-time conversions, abandonment and revenue alongside performance. Prioritise action based on business 'facts,' not IT guesswork.
"Go Daddy, the Web's top platform for small businesses, uses Compuware APM to manage the performance and availability of its most important applications," said Go Daddy Lead Performance Engineer Marcel Verkerk. "Now with Compuware APMaaS, we are able to bring next-generation real user monitoring and synthetic monitoring together into a single platform to quickly understand what, where and how, users are impacted by performance problems. It allows Go Daddy to address these issues quicker according to business impact, which ultimately leads to a better, more responsive experience for our customers every time they use our applications."
"Today more than ever, IT organisations are squeezed between mounting complexity, increased user and business demand, and the manpower and funding to keep up," said John Van Siclen, General Manager of Compuware's APM business unit. "Now, thanks to the convergence of two of our key industry-leading technologies - PurePath from dynaTrace and the Gomez Performance Network - into a single cloud-based environment, customers now have a complete, on-demand solution for application performance management from the user perspective."
Compuware APM is the leader in a new generation of application performance management. 29% of Companies That Use Customer Data When Testing Applications Put That at Risk by Passing it Unprotected to Outsourcers, According to Compuware Study2013-05-08T02:30:00Z29-of-companies-that-use-customer-data-when-testing-applications-put-that-at-risk-by-passing-it-unprotected-to-outsourcers-according-to-compuware-studyCompuware Corporation (Nasdaq: CPWR), the technology performance company, today announced the results of an Australian CIO survey on attitudes and practices relating to the use of customer data in outsourced mainframe application development and maintenance. The survey found that despite significant security risks, 29 percent of Australian companies that provide outsourcers with customer data to test and maintain their mainframe applications do not mask or protect their customer data before supplying it to outsourcers. On the other end of the spectrum, 83 percent of companies that do mask their customer data before providing it to outsourcers describe the process as being difficult; and 71 percent of those that mask claim that masking data negatively impacts the quality of their testing and QA processes. Notably, 30 percent of companies do not provide their outsourcer with customer data at all; despite the fact test data should reflect production data conditions as closely as possible.
“If applications are to be tested thoroughly, particularly in the complex world of the mainframe, test data conditions should reflect live data conditions as closely as possible or the application may not perform well in production,” said Kris Manery, Senior Vice President and General Manager, Mainframe Solutions, Compuware. “Because the mainframe is central to the functioning of many businesses, any application downtime or disruptions can be disastrous. This presents a challenge to companies working with third parties to develop and maintain such applications, as it means organisations have to hand over their customer data. Providing third parties with unprotected customer data not only increases the potential for data to be misused or stolen, but can also put companies in danger of violating data protection regulations. Either could seriously impact revenues and reputation should a breach occur.”
Data Privacy Concerns
The research highlights the fact that a number of companies are providing outsourcers with unprotected customer data to test applications. Most countries have strict data protection laws governing the use and sharing of customer data with third parties, but many companies appear unsure about the regulations in place and how they are affected by them:
· 59 percent of respondents that share customer data do not understand data protection laws and regulations; with a further 12 percent believing data protection lies outside of their responsibility
· 29 percent of companies that provide outsourcers with customer data do not mask this data before providing it to outsourcers, as they fear doing so will impact the quality of their QA processes
· 40 percent of organisations that do not mask customer data before passing it to a third party rely on Non-Disclosure Agreements (NDAs) to protect their customer’s data.
Unreliable Test Data
To avoid issues relating to data privacy, a number of organisations mask customer data or select small amounts of data rather than a full production copy, but this is a difficult process. Some go even further and do not provide any customer data to use in the testing process, forcing the need to create test data for application testing. This method, however, can be very expensive and time-consuming. These practices are impacting the quality of outsourced application development, as systems can’t be thoroughly tested unless test data reflects current production data as closely as possible:
· 30 percent of companies do not use customer data when testing their mainframe applications
· 59 percent of companies that provide outsourcers with customer data use out-of-date data to test applications
· 83 percent of companies that mask their customer data before providing it to outsourcers describe the process as being difficult
· 71 percent of respondents that mask customer data believe the security measures they have in place to keep test data secure negatively impacts the quality of testing and QA processes.
“Companies appear to feel trapped between a rock and a hard place,” said Manery. “Without the proper tools, disguising data is difficult; similarly, using a full production copy results in higher than necessary resource consumption and increases the privacy risk. Both methods impact quality, because they do not use up-to-date and accurate production data. Yet providing third parties with customer data is equally unappealing, because companies have to rely on insecure NDAs, creating a risk of a data breach. What many don’t understand is that there are methods, such as test data optimisation, that allows companies as well as outsourcers to more easily create test data that can be processed efficiently while guarding against costly data breaches.”

Compuware Global Consumer Survey Reveals Preference for Mobile Apps2013-03-15T03:02:00Zcompuware-global-consumer-survey-reveals-preference-for-mobile-appsCompuware Corporation (Nasdaq:CPWR), the technology performance company, has published the findings of a global study of consumer mobile application expectations and experiences. The survey reveals that global consumers prefer mobile apps over mobile websites.
Mobile applications are thought to make life easier by streamlining calendars and grocery lists, offering entertainment while in line and making it easy to collaborate with co-workers. Consumers now associate apps with banking, paying bills, shopping, booking hotels and travel, as well as with staying productive and connected with both home and office tasks.
When asked about the benefits of using a mobile app vs. a mobile website (a website that is specifically designed to be viewed on a mobile device), 85 percent of survey respondents preferred mobile apps over mobile websites, primarily because apps are more convenient, faster and easier to navigate. Among those who experienced a problem:
- 62 percent reported a crash, freeze or error.
- 47 percent experienced slow launch times.
- 40 percent tried an app that simply would not launch.
The survey of more than 3,500 global respondents sought to answer what consumers really need and want when it comes to mobile applications. While the answer to this question is ever changing, there are a few basics, including:
- easy access to product and store information;
- help planning and navigating their trip types; and
- the ability to communicate in real-time.
Consumers want apps that push out personalised content as well as offers and perks based on their interests, while providing the ability to share offers, news and product recommendations virally on their social networks. However, bad mobile app experiences will likely also be shared virally, which can result in poor reviews and low ratings that can impact adoption numbers. A poor mobile app experience is also likely to discourage users from using that app again.
"With consumers expecting greater experiences with mobile apps now more than ever, fulfilling those expectations doesn't just happen -- it takes a conscious effort throughout every stage of the design and development process to get it right," said Stephen Pierzchala, Technology Strategist, Compuware APM Center of Excellence. "Performance is a crucial contributor to providing a dependable mobile app user experience, so performance should be considered a key driver in the design process. Mobile applications need to focus on a core utility, and they need to be fast and reliable in order to be valuable."

Compuware Announces Business Partnership With IBM to Unlock the Power of Big Data for Changepoint Customers2013-03-13T01:42:00Zcompuware-announces-business-partnership-with-ibm-to-unlock-the-power-of-big-data-for-changepoint-customersCompuware Corporation (Nasdaq:CPWR) today announced it has partnered with IBM to deliver IBM Business Analytics within Compuware's market-leading PSA/PPM solution, Changepoint. Through Changepoint, businesses with growing, global services and IT organisations will now have access to advanced business analytics for smarter decision-making.
The technology services sector, a key market for Compuware Changepoint, has experienced significant growth over the last number of years, and according to a research report by Global Industry Analysts Inc., (GIA),(1) this sector -- driven by cloud technology and software-as-a-service adoption -- is expected to reach a value of US$1.2 trillion by 2015. As companies in this sector grow and mature, they are actively seeking to sharpen business insight, align metrics with key business objectives, and improve execution on strategy.
Every day, we create 2.5 quintillion bytes of data -- so much that 90% of the data in the world today has been created in the last two years alone (2). Because of the exponential increase of corporate big data, Compuware Changepoint selected IBM's Business Analytics solution to help its customers:
- Manage growing amounts of data. The ability to sort and manage vast quantities of data and access this information on various devices including tablets is a business necessity for executives. Changepoint and IBM Business Analytics provide robust portal, dash-boarding and visual analytic access in a real-time environment to provide increased visibility.
- Translate data into knowledge. Not only do executives need to manage and access more and more data, they need to be able to quickly interpret this data to drive real-time business decisions. The key metrics for managing a services business are revenue and margin. Traditionally, executives have had difficulty in obtaining real-time financial information from their services business. As an example, organisations with no resource visibility are not optimising allocation. Real-time access into resource skills and availability translates to increased resource utilisation. A one percent increase in utilisation for a 100-person organisation can contribute an additional US$312,000 to the bottom line (3). IBM Business Analytics provides better visibility and drill-through capabilities into data, which impacts the overall health and performance of a business.
"As Changepoint adoption grows within technology services and IT organisations and as customers broaden the deployment of Changepoint within their organisations -- in some cases to tens of thousands of users -- there's an increased volume of data collected and a need to analyse and interpret business information and turn it into powerful insight," said Lori Ellsworth, Senior Vice President and General Manager, Compuware Changepoint Business Unit. "Customers want powerful, secure reports and business analytics. After an extensive survey of the BI marketplace, we determined that IBM was the best fit for our customer base. We believe the addition of IBM Business Analytics sets us well ahead of our competitors in the market today."
By delivering a consistent, accurate view of all business information, IBM Business Analytics provides decision makers at all levels of the enterprise with ground-breaking capabilities to better manage performance. The seamless integration between IBM Business Analytics and Changepoint will provide users with robust out-of-the-box business intelligence to drive financial forecasting, operational excellence, and resource planning and customer satisfaction -- enabling improved execution on services strategy.
Additionally, IBM Business Analytics will provide executives with more powerful analytics to manage critical objectives for their professional services and IT organisations. Key capabilities of the integrated solution include:
- Real-time visibility within Changepoint through embedded dashboards and portals showcasing interactive graphical and tabular data that provides clear revenue, cost and margin type metrics providing increased visibility into operational success.
- Ability to tailor analytic information by use in real-time through IBM Business Analytics using extended grouping, filtering and drill-through capabilities.
- Comprehensive data model that respects Changepoint's security protocol to ensure organizational analytical integrity for end users.
- Ability for executives and consultants to access analytics via tablet, mobile devices and desktop providing real-time access to data.
Availability
IBM Business Analytics will be available with Compuware Changepoint in March, 2013, delivered as part of the Changepoint 2012 Service Pack 1 (SP1) release.

Compuware Unveils AJAX Edition 4, The Industry’s Most Advanced Cross-Browser Diagnostics Tool2013-03-06T06:25:00Zfree-tool-delivers-unprecedented-visibility-into-front-end-web-performance-ability-to-test-and-diagnose-performance-issues-across-all-browser-versions-of-internet-explorer-and-firefoxCompuware Corporation <http://www.compuware.com/> (Nasdaq: CPWR), the technology performance company, today announced Compuware APM AJAX Edition 4, the industry’s most advanced cross-browser diagnostics tool. This new version enables developers to test and diagnose performance issues across all recent and legacy browser versions in Internet Explorer and Firefox. To date, nearly 100,000 development and testing experts have downloaded AJAX Edition and rely on it to solve the most challenging client-side performance problems.
With more application logic sitting in the web browser than ever before, it has never been more important to measure and optimise the performance of web 2.0 pages and applications. Additionally, in a world where the competition is only a click away, highly interactive web experiences with dynamic web 2.0 pages and applications have become crucial to keeping customers loyal and attracting new ones. This often means introducing AJAX actions that do not trigger a complete page reload in order to deliver a world-class end-user experience.
AJAX Edition 4 was built to deliver root-cause analysis of performance issues that this increased complexity often creates. It empowers developers to pinpoint problems and immediately make front-end web performance improvements on their website and Asynchronous JavaScript and XML (AJAX) web applications.
New features and capabilities in Compuware APM AJAX Edition 4 include:
· Unparalleled Support for Firefox and Cross-Browser Diagnostics: AJAX Edition 4 supports the two latest versions of Firefox (17&18). This enables users to profile, debug and trace across all relevant versions of Firefox and Internet Explorer and to test browser performance where degradation is most likely to occur when running complex applications.
· Added Support for Legacy Browser Versions: Until now, there has been limited means to get insight into application performance on older browser versions. AJAX Edition 4 supports legacy Internet Explorer and Firefox versions (IE 6+ and FF3.6+) to help developers and testers get to the root of browser version specific problems.
· Tight integration with SpeedoftheWeb.com <http://www.speedoftheweb.com> : AJAX Edition 4 enables immediate performance optimisation based on test sessions that can be created from the desktop. They can be run for free using SpeedoftheWeb.com, which tests any site’s performance from locations around the world, and provides a comparison of performance across multiple locations. Developers can then import test sessions into an insistence of AJAX Edition 4 for diagnostics and to further optimise performance.
“Poor performance directly impacts loyalty, brand and sales, and the advanced action-based analytics that AJAX Edition 4 provides are great benefits for the advanced developer community,” said Steve Tack, Vice President of Product Management for Compuware’s APM business unit. “The increased complexity that comes with today’s websites necessitates a tool for developers and testers to analyse forensics on all activities within dynamic page components while they load. They also need a total view of the spectrum of moving parts triggered by user actions across all browsers. AJAX Edition 4 addresses this by providing the most advanced browser diagnostic tool in the market.”
AJAX Edition 4 captures information within the browser to analyze problems like long running JavaScript code, excessive DOM calls, slow AJAX invocations or problems with rendering. The solution helps developers and testers understand and resolve performance problems, even if they are not part of their own code but are related to complex frameworks that are otherwise a black box to developers. Ultimately, it helps them master the complexity of frameworks.

Compuware Unveils Workbench Innovations that Significantly Boost Developer Productivity2013-01-30T06:36:00Zcompuware-unveils-workbench-innovations-that-significantly-boost-developer-productivityCompuware Corporation (Nasdaq: CPWR), the technology performance company, today announced important enhancements to the Compuware Workbench <http://www.compuware.com/mainframe-solutions/workbench-mainframe-modernization.html> , a standardised point-and-click mainframe application development interface. The Workbench now features faster and more efficient file and data management capabilities -- including the ability to edit complex IMS databases -- as well as more robust debugging functionality, all designed to significantly boost developer productivity. The Workbench is designed to help companies “future proof” mainframe development by providing an environment where new and inexperienced developers can produce high quality applications that drive business success.
“Without access to a modernised development interface, new developers would be deterred by the complex and antiquated mainframe development environment, leaving companies vulnerable to application outages and other business risks when experienced developers retire and take their knowledge with them,” said Kris Manery, Senior Vice President, Mainframe Solutions <http://www.compuware.com/mainframe-solutions/> Business Unit, Compuware.
The Latest Workbench Innovations
The Workbench File-AID Data Editor now supports browsing and editing of IMS databases in addition to DB2 and other mainframe file systems. As one of the older mainframe database and transaction management systems, IMS requires highly technical and specialised knowledge to manage and support. With this new Workbench enhancement for IMS, however, developers can easily edit, browse and understand IMS data constructs from within the same intuitive, standardised editor they use for other mainframe data types. Industry watchers will note that File-AID -- the cross-platform file and data management solution first introduced 30 years ago -- revolutionised how developers access and manage mainframe data files by providing quick and convenient browse, edit and utility functions from TSO/ISPF. Three decades of innovations later, File-AID continues to lead the industry with its new graphical user interface that fits the needs of a new breed of software developers.
In addition to a more robust File-AID Data Editor, Workbench users -- without needing prior knowledge of legacy mainframe systems -- will also enjoy:
· A simplified file and data management process. The File-AID Data Editor now supports the XREF capabilities of File-AID MVS by automating the selection and usage of record layouts for files with different record types. File-AID determines the record layout to use for each record type by the value in one or more data fields.
• Additional flexibility when debugging programs. Xpediter/Eclipse now includes “Monitor/Reverse” and “Step Into, Step Over, and Step Return,” along with other enhancements that provide developers with more flexibility when navigating through source code during the application debugging process.
• Advanced internal diagnostics and component level checking. Users can now automatically display compile diagnostics, such as syntax errors and compiler warnings, enabling developers to quickly pinpoint the exact location of the errant code causing an application error.
The Workbench now supports all major environments and formats of Compuware’s developer productivity product lines <http://www.compuware.com/mainframe-solutions/mainframe-developer-productivity.html> -- Abend-AID, Hiperstation, Xpediter, Strobe and File-AID -- giving developers the tools they need to develop, test, debug and tune applications.
“Mainframe applications support billions of banking and mobile commerce transactions a day across the globe,” continued Manery. “These applications are deceivingly simple on the front end -- hit a few keys on your phone and a few days later a package arrives in the mail. The fact is that these applications are highly complex and require specialised tools to develop and maintain them. Compuware continues to make strategic investments in its mainframe solutions to help developers of all experience levels continue the important work of developing critical applications.”
About the Compuware Mainframe Solutions
Compuware’s market-leading Mainframe solutions, Abend-AID, File-AID, Xpediter, Hiperstation and Strobe, help leading organisations maximise developer productivity, minimise costs and deliver better service. The Solutions are available in the traditional TSO/ISPF environment, or within the Compuware Workbench, an open development environment that features an intuitive modern interface. The Workbench makes application development, testing and tuning faster and simpler to perform for both experienced mainframers as well those new to the mainframe, enabling companies to develop new services faster, more efficiently and with higher quality utilising existing resources.

Compuware Reveals Top Five 2013 Predictions2012-12-17T23:04:00Zcompuware-reveals-top-five-2013-predictions
Compuware Corporation <http://www.compuware.com/> (Nasdaq: CPWR), the technology performance company, today announced its top application performance management <http://www.compuware.com/application-performance-management/> (APM) predictions for 2013 and insight on why APM is becoming a new imperative for C-Suite executives. APM is the principal IT discipline enabling organisations to assure the performance, availability and value of business-critical applications.
According to Gartner, Inc., APM has become a central focus for IT operations. By the end of 2012, Gartner estimates global spending for APM software will grow to US$2.14 billion, up 9% over the US$2 billion spent in 2011.(i)
In today’s era of the digital enterprise, two primary forces are driving the evolution of the APM market:
1. A growing realisation by executives that applications are the business, and application performance impacts customer loyalty, sales and profits.
2. A new generation of APM <http://www.compuware.com/application-performance-management/> solutions has emerged that are fundamentally different from traditional APM. Modern APM isn’t just another IT “tool.” It’s an application management system that ensures enterprise-wide application performance, allowing companies to speed new releases to market, proactively eliminate issues before they impact users, reduce application management costs and increase application profitability.
APM will also play a leading role helping organisations gain value from major technologies identified by analysts and industry influencers as priorities in 2013. Compuware’s top five 2013 APM predictions are:
· Prediction 1: Complexity Will Continue to Accelerate Around Management of Business Critical Apps. IT environments continue to become more complex - at the edge of the internet, in the cloud and in the data centre - increasing the need for new generation APM with unified, real-time insight across the application delivery chain, including third-party and cloud services. This insight, coupled with deep 24/7 visibility, enables organisations to optimise application performance <http://www.compuware.com/application-performance-management/> from the user’s device, through the cloud, across all data centre tiers to a system of record and back again, preventing potential problems from having an impact on users.
· Prediction 2: Performance Analytics <http://www.outageanalyzer.com/> Will Be a Requirement For a Complete APM Strategy. Organisations now collect unprecedented volumes of data. The key to making sense of this will be systems that automate analytics and deliver actionable insight and answers, not just more data. Increasingly, new generation APM will provide a unified system for all stakeholders. Business owners will use it to obtain immediate insight needed to ensure that applications effectively support business goals and that IT has the transaction-pure detail needed to optimise application performance and assure stability and scalability.
· Prediction 3: The Mobile Surge Will Drive the Industrialization of Mobile Applications. Users now access applications from an unprecedented number of mobile devices and apps. Mobile applications are maturing to become the primary engagement model in many markets, from financial services to e-Commerce, and the sustained mobile explosion continues to fuel the ever-growing performance expectations of end users <http://www.compuware.com/application-performance-management/mobile.html> . Modern APM simplifies mobile complexity and enables optimised applications, so organisations can keep businesses competitive amidst a rapidly changing landscape.
· Prediction 4: APM Will Become a Strategic Component of Big Data. Big data is trending from experimental projects to becoming an enterprise-wide analytics platform. Expanding data volume, variety, velocity and complexity necessitates a new approach to enterprise analytics. Integrating new generation APM into big data environments <http://www.compuware.com/application-performance-management/big-data.html> will become a best practice for organisations to eliminate risks and costs associated with poor performance, availability and scalability. As early adopters are discovering, big hardware does not necessarily mean faster big data apps.
· Prediction 5: A Lifecycle Approach to APM <http://www.compuware.com/application-performance-management/unify-application-performance-lifecycle.html> Will Drive Adoption of DevOps and Agile Operations. Leading organisations are already using new generation APM to support unified management of the application lifecycle--development, testing and production. With DevOps and Agile gaining ground, more organisations will take a lifecycle approach to APM. By using a lifecycle approach, redundant, time-consuming tasks are automated, and business processes across traditional silos are dramatically improved. This means faster applications, faster time-to-market, and the elimination of issues before they become problems in production.
“2013 will be another year of accelerated change in the application management space, especially as C-level executives who care about brand, loyalty, revenue and profitability become fluent in the capabilities of new generation APM,” said John Van Siclen, General Manager of Compuware’s APM business unit. “Applications are only getting more complex, new dynamic environments like cloud and big data are going mainstream, mobile applications will be industrialised and application release cycles are shortening. As a result, moving from traditional APM tools to modern APM systems to manage and optimise application performance will be essential for businesses that want to stay ahead of the game.”
Compuware APM® <http://www.compuware.com/application-performance-management/compuware-apm.html> is the industry’s leading solution for optimising the performance of web, non-web, mobile, streaming and cloud applications. Driven by end-user experience <http://www.compuware.com/application-performance-management/end-user-experience-synthetic-monitoring.html> , Compuware APM provides the market’s only unified APM coverage across the entire application delivery chain—from the edge of the internet through the cloud to the datacentre. 63 Percent of Australian Companies Frustrated by “Hidden Costs” of Mainframe Outsourcing According to Compuware Study2012-12-13T00:34:00Z63-percent-of-australian-companies-frustrated-by-hidden-costs-of-mainframe-outsourcing-according-to-compuware-studyCompuware Corporation <http://www.compuware.com/> (Nasdaq: CPWR), the technology performance company, today announced the results of an *Australian CIO survey on attitudes and experiences with mainframe outsourcing. The survey found that reducing costs is a major business driver for outsourcing mainframe application development, maintenance and infrastructure. Yet multiple hidden associated costs are causing frustration for 63 percent of CIOs. These hidden costs result from increases in MIPS (million instructions per second) consumption, as well as higher investments in testing and troubleshooting all due to poor application quality and performance. In fact, 60 percent of respondents reported an overall dissatisfaction with the quality of new applications or services provided by their outsourcer, citing a widening in-house skills gap, difficulties with knowledge transfer and staff churn within outsourcer organisations. Compuware has published a related white paper titled, "Mainframe Outsourcing: Removing the Hidden Costs," which details the findings from the study.
“It is true that outsourcing can help companies reduce costs and gain access to technical expertise they might not have in house, particularly as experienced mainframe developers move on and take their applications knowledge with them,” said Brett Lightfoot, Technical Director ANZ and Japan, Compuware. “However, as the research shows, there is a growing frustration that outsourcers are failing to meet expectations. Because there is no means to easily transfer application knowledge to the outsourcer--and to verify code quality and performance when it is delivered--application quality suffers, thus undermining any potential savings.”
MIPS Consumption
One of the greatest expenditures relating to mainframes is MIPS consumption. Contrary to popular belief, mainframes are being used more than ever, meaning consumption is naturally on the rise. However, consumption is also escalating due to inefficient coding, adding unnecessary costs:
· MIPS costs are increasing on average by 22 percent year over year, with 43 percent of respondents claiming that consumption is getting out of control.
· 83 percent of respondents using pay structures based on CPU consumption think their outsourcer could manage their CPU costs better.
· 67 percent of all respondents believe outsourcers do not worry about the efficiency of the applications that they write.
· 73 percent of respondents believe that the increase in mobile applications, for things like mobile banking, is driving higher MIPS usage and creating additional costs.
Quality
The quality issues in the outsourced development of mainframe applications are increasing the total cost of ownership, as additional time and resources are required to complete projects, contributing to an overall picture of dissatisfaction within the end-user community
· 68 percent of companies have had to increase investment in performance testing and troubleshooting due to the poor quality of work provided by their outsourcers.
· 72 percent of respondents outsourcing their mainframe application development and maintenance believe they are having to increase their investment in their internal QA team due to the poor quality of work being delivered by outsourcers.
· Almost half of respondents (48 percent) find that the error and bug rate in application code delivered by an outsourcer is higher than with in-house developers.
· IT teams are spending an average of 21 days fixing application bugs and performance problems from outsourcers on any given project.
· 60 percent of respondents expressed that the quality of new applications or services provided by their outsourcer is not always satisfactory.
“Outsourcers and enterprises need to look at how they are working together and implement processes and tools that will lead to better outcomes,” said Lightfoot. “For example, how can they document legacy applications to address problems around knowledge transfer? Can they bring performance testing into the development cycle earlier? Using simple solutions such as these, companies can better manage their outsourcer contracts and reduce the total cost of ownership of mainframes by removing the hidden associated costs, ultimately improving the quality of service delivered to end-users.”
Knowledge Transfer
The increasing complexity of the mainframe ecosystems outlined above is creating a greater need for existing applications to be modified, as well as creating a need for new services to be developed and integrated with existing mainframe applications. However, a significant lack of in-house legacy skills and documentation creates challenges, increasing the drive towards outsourcing and impacting quality:
· 84 percent of respondents claim difficulties with knowledge transfer is impacting on the quality of outsourced projects.
· 56 percent say their in-house teams no longer have the legacy knowledge to maintain mainframe applications while 32 percent of companies state that the lack of in-house expertise is a key motivator for outsourcing.
· 76 percent of respondents claim staff churn within outsourcers’ organisations negatively impacts the quality and turnaround time of work they deliver.
*Commissioned by Compuware and conducted by independent research company Vanson Bourne, the survey consisted was administered to CIOs from large companies, covering a cross-section of vertical markets in Australia.

Australian Companies Fail to Meet End User Web and Mobile Performance Expectations2012-11-21T06:36:00Zaustralian-companies-fail-to-meet-end-user-web-and-mobile-performance-expectations
Compuware Corporation <http://www.compuware.com/> (Nasdaq: CPWR), the technology performance company, today announced the results of a new survey into the expectations and experiences of web and mobile computing in Australia. The survey revealed that although end users embrace a wide variety of devices to access the Internet, they have high performance expectations and many Australian companies are failing to meet their expectations.
The survey asked 1,000 respondents to quantify their web and mobile performance expectations. Just under half of Internet users (47 per cent) and more than half (53 per cent) of tablet users believe that a web page should load in two seconds or less. Smartphone owners are slightly are more patient, with 67 per cent expecting web pages to load in five seconds or less. Although web and mobile users expect quick, anytime transactions that work flawlessly every time, that’s not what they’re getting. Today, top Australian companies across multiple verticals have web and mobile page load times of five seconds or more.
Poor web and mobile performance prevent many companies from taking advantage of revenue generating opportunities. Unsatisfactory web and mobile experiences can negatively shape a consumer’s opinion of an organisation and can impact their online behaviour. The surveyed revealed that the top three actions taken by dissatisfied users included:
· a reduced chance of purchasing from the company;
· less likelihood of visiting the site again;
· a determination to visit the web site of another company that provides a similar service.
“Poor web and mobile performance impact customer acquisition, retention and revenues. People are quick to abandon unreliable apps and they have no time for outages, slow or unpredictable web experiences,” said Rafi Katanasho, Asia Pacific Director – Application Performance Management, Compuware Corporation. “The failure to engage and keep customers online also brings new operational and infrastructure costs as companies have to turn their attention to more expensive channels.”
The survey also found that almost half (47 per cent) use a smartphone to access the Internet. Seven in ten (69 per cent) of those use their smartphone device to access the Internet on a daily basis. The highest level of smartphone use occurs between the ages of 18 and 34, where over three quarters (76 per cent) use their device to access the Internet. Across all age groups, almost three in five (58 per cent) people report using a tablet for Internet access on a daily basis. Katanasho added, “In 20 short years we've become so used to the Internet that our expectations have soared. This study sends a clear message that companies should be treating all their channels as a single, integrated platform and that web sites must be designed and purpose built for each possible device.”
Compuware recommends the following strategies for companies seeking to optimise web and mobile performance:
1. Know how fast your mobile and web apps perform.
2. Benchmark competitor performance.
3. Compare both to end-user expectations.
4. Ensure that web and mobile apps and major business processes are optimised for all mobile devices including tablets and smartphones.
5. Recognise that there is a wide spectrum of devices and browsers to cater for, including the iPhone, iPad, Android phones and tablets, Amazon Kindle Fire and BlackBerry Playbook.
6. Focus on improving performance, particularly for mobile devices which already operate in a constrained environment due to their limited computing power and the need to deal with slow or high latency networks.
7. Consider delivering a tablet or smartphone optimised site to provide fast, quality experiences.
8. Aim for consistent, high performance under peak and non-peak traffic conditions, 24 hours a day, seven days a week.
9. Design web and mobile apps with all possible networks in mind, including cable, WiFi, 3G and 4G.
10. National borders have little role on the internet, so don't forget to cater for customers from all possible geographies.
About the survey

Compuware Unveils Outage Analyzer, a New Generation Performance Analytics Solution that Raises the Intelligence of SaaS APM2012-10-11T01:01:00Zcompuware-unveils-outage-analyzer-a-new-generation-performance-analytics-solution-that-raises-the-intelligence-of-saas-apmCompuware Corporation (NASDAQ: CPWR), the technology performance company today announced a new generation performance analytics solution that raises the intelligence of software-as-a-service (SaaS) application performance management (APM). Outage Analyzer <http://www.outageanalyzer.com/> provides real-time visualisations and alerts of outages in third-party web services that are mission critical to web, mobile and cloud applications around the globe. Compuware is providing this new service free of charge. Check out Outage Analyzer here <http://www.outageanalyzer.com/> .
Utilising cutting-edge big data technologies and a proprietary anomaly detection engine, Outage Analyzer correlates more than eight billion data points per day. This data is collected from the Compuware Gomez Performance Monitoring Network <http://www.compuware.com/application-performance-management/gomez-apm-products.html> of more than 150,000 test locations and delivers information on specific outages including the scope, duration and probable cause of the event – all visualised in real-time.
“Compuware’s new Outage Analyzer <http://www.outageanalyzer.com/> service is a primary example of the emerging industry trend toward applying big data analytics technologies to help understand and resolve application performance and availability issues in near real-time,” said Tim Grieser, Program VP, Enterprise System Management Software at IDC. “Outage Analyzer’s ability to analyse and visualise large masses of data, with automated anomaly detection, can help IT and business users better understand the sources and causes of outages in third-party web services.”
Cloud and third-party web services allow organisations to rapidly deliver a rich user experience, but also expose web and mobile sites to degraded performance - or even a total outage - should any of those components fail. Research shows that the typical website has more than ten separate hosts contributing to a single transaction, many of which come from third-party cloud services such as social media, ecommerce platforms, web analytics, ad servers and content delivery networks.
Outage Analyzer addresses this complexity with the following capabilities:
· Incident Visualisation: Issues with third-party services are automatically visualised on Outage Analyzer’s <http://www.outageanalyzer.com/> global map view. This view displays information on the current status, impact - based on severity and geography - and duration, along with the certainty and probable cause of the outage. Outage Analyzer <http://www.outageanalyzer.com/> also provides a timeline view that shows the spread and escalation of the outage. The timeline has a playback feature to replay the outage and review its impact over time.
· Incident Filtering and Searching: With Outage Analyzer <http://www.outageanalyzer.com/> , users can automatically view the most recent outages, filtered by severity of impact, or search for outages in specific IPs, IP ranges or service domains. This allows users to find the outages in services that are potentially impacting their own applications.
· Alerting: Users can sign-up to automatically receive alerts - RSS and Twitter feeds - and can specify the exact types of incidents to be alerted on such as popularity of third-party web service provider, certainty of an outage and by the geographical region impacted. Alerts contain links to the global map view and details of the outage. This provides an early-warning system to potential problems.
· Performance Analytics Big Data Platform: Utilising cutting-edge big data technologies in the cloud, including Flume and Hadoop, Outage Analyzer collects live data from the entire Gomez customer base and Gomez Benchmark tests, processing more than eight billion data points per day. The processing from raw data to visualization and alerting on an outage all happens within minutes, making the outage data timely and actionable.
· Anomaly Detection Algorithms: At the heart of Outage Analyzer’s <http://www.outageanalyzer.com/> big data platform is a proprietary anomaly detection engine that automatically identifies availability issues with third-party web services that are impacting performance of the web across the globe. Outage Analyzer <http://www.outageanalyzer.com/> then correlates the outage data, identifies the source of the problem, calculates the impact and lists the probable causes – all in real-time.
“Since Outage Analyzer has been up and running, we’ve seen an average of about 200 third-party web service outages a day,” said Steve Tack, VP Product Management, Compuware APM business unit. “Outage Analyzer is just the beginning. Our big data platform, propriety correlation and anomaly detection algorithms, and intuitive visualisations of issues with cloud and third-party web services are key building-blocks to delivering a new generation of answer-centric APM.”
Outage Analyzer <http://www.outageanalyzer.com/> harnesses the collective intelligence of the Compuware Gomez Network, the largest and most active APM SaaS platform <http://www.compuware.com/application-performance-management/gomez-apm-products.html> in the world. Now eight billion measurements a day across the global Internet can be harnessed by any organisation serious about delivering exceptional web application performance. Determining whether an application performance issue is the fault of an organisation’s code, or the fault of a third-party service has never been easier.
