Verizon to Deploy the Industry’s First Eight Terabit Platform in Its Global MPLS Backbone
Verizon to Deploy Juniper Networks PTX Series in U.S. and European Markets
SYDNEY, Australia – 13 June 2012 -- Verizon plans to deploy the Juniper Networks PTX Series in major markets in the U.S. and Europe by the end of this year, giving the company the densest multiprotocol label switching platform available in the industry, with an initial capacity of eight terabits per second. The initiative is another step in Verizon’s network evolution to deliver higher speeds, improved latency, increased capacity and enhanced performance to its customers. This deployment provides an upgrade of the Verizon global IP backbone to 100G Ethernet, supporting customer access speeds of 10G and above and enabling growth for FiOS, wireless and cloud services.“In a world where customer needs and speeds are steadily increasing, Verizon will be able to improve the scalability and efficiency of its core MPLS network by employing the industry-leading switch density of the Juniper Networks PTX,” said Ihab Tarazi, vice president of global IP and transport planning and technology for Verizon. “The PTX provides significant packet processing power, system scale and reduced power consumption – all of which will help Verizon meet its future needs.” Built for high capacity, the Juniper Networks PTX Series provides up to 16 terabits per second of capacity in a single chassis as well as industry-leading density in 10G (gigabit), 40G and 100G Ethernet interfaces. Verizon will initially deploy the PTX5000, which delivers eight terabits per second of capacity, with plans to eventually move toward higher terabit capacity. "Verizon’s reputation as a pioneer in advanced communications and entertainment services was clearly demonstrated in 2010 when the company became the first service provider to commercially deploy 100G Ethernet,” said Stefan Dyckerhoff, executive vice president and general manager for Juniper Networks Platform Systems Division. “Today, Verizon makes another landmark decision by selecting the PTX Series, the industry’s first converged packet transport switch, to advance its network core and provide future-ready scalability while dramatically simplifying its infrastructure overhead. “The PTX Series will not only help enable Verizon to provide to its customers additional service options and a superior user experience, but it will also ultimately improve network performance and efficiency,” Dyckerhoff said. This next-generation technology will support private and public IP services, including Ethernet, while offering greater capacity, reduced power consumption per gigabit, increased cost efficiency and a technology roadmap to scale in the future. “Service providers face significant operational challenges as packet data traffic volume across global wireline and broadband wireless networks is forecast to increase seven-fold by 2015, driven by significant increases in Internet, IP data, video, over-the-top traffic, content distribution networks and mobile data traffic,” said Nav Chander, research manager, enterprise telecom at IDC. “Verizon’s decision to deploy a next-generation packet optimised core transport solution helps Verizon better prepare and manage this network growth for the diverse packet data applications across its global network infrastructure and portfolio of wireless and wireline services.” Verizon and Juniper Networks teamed to leverage proven MPLS technology and create a highly scalable, simplified network architecture capable of supporting powerful cloud, video and advanced applications worldwide. “Verizon’s market leadership is founded not only on the delivery of quality services and meeting customers’ needs but through collaboration with key industry players such as Juniper Networks,” said Tarazi. Verizon worked closely with Juniper Networks to advance the Junos Express chipset to achieve lowered power requirements, increased performance and reduced cost – all of which help meet the growth challenges of Verizon’s customer base.

AUSTRALIA - January 16, 2011 - Verizon maintained its network
leadership position throughout 2011 by further deploying new wireline and
wireless technologies, expanding capabilities in network infrastructure and
advancing strategic network projects -- all supporting such high-performance
services as the award-winning FiOS and Carrier Ethernet, plus industry-leading
cloud solutions.
These
operational and technological accomplishments helped reinforce the company’s
commitment to meeting customer demand by increasing the capacity, speed,
resiliency and efficiency of Verizon’s global network, which stretches more than 670,000
route miles, including terrestrial and undersea cable, and spans six continents.
“From local
to global, Verizon’s continued investment in networks and leading-edge
technology is driving unsurpassed reliability and a superior consumer
experience” said Tony Melone, chief technology officer for Verizon.
“In addition, our world-class networks are enhancing, and even changing, business
models for industries that use these networks.
“Our network
strategy focuses on advancing technologies and expanding our network reach in a
way that energises future innovations, as we have seen in areas such as 4G LTE,
100G optical and FiOS,” he said.
100G
Technology Sets Verizon Apart
Marking two
industry firsts, Verizon deployed 100 Gbps (gigabits per second) technology on
portions of its European and U.S. networks.
The company
has the first standards-based, multivendor 100 gigabit Ethernet link on
its IP backbone on a portion of the company’s European long-haul network,
increasing capacity and performance for multinational business and government
customers.
On its U.S.
backbone network, Verizon deployed 100 Gbps technology on an ultra-long-haul optical system between New York and Chicago,
helping deliver better efficiencies and scalability.
This
advanced technology also significantly reduces latency – the time it takes for
data sent from its entry point in the network to reach its destination-- as
well as provides greater capacity per fiber and helps control costs.
What’s
After 100G?
In another
industry first, Verizon and NEC Corporation of America jointly completed a field
trial transmitting high bit-rate technologies, including 100 Gbps, 450 Gbps and 1T
(1 terabit or 1,000 Gbps), coexisting on the same fiber. The trial, which
measured the quality of the signal for all channels as well as the intensity of
the optical signal, showed these “superchannels” are able to carry higher
capacities while improving spectral efficiency without sacrificing distance.
Unmatched
Enterprise Cloud Services
Verizon acquired Terremark, which offers an unmatched
combination of global data centres, cloud solutions and IT consulting services.
World-class IT services and cloud offerings-- including
virtualisation, collocation, managed hosting, application management, storage
and cloud computing services -- will help customers operate more nimbly and
take advantage of better cost economies.
The company
also acquired CloudSwitch, an innovative provider of cloud software
technology that helps customers simplify moving to the enterprise cloud as well
as helps boost industry adoption.
As a result
of these acquisitions, Network World magazine ranked Verizon among the 10 most
powerful cloud companies in the magazine’s year-end list.
Leading
the Way with Verizon Wireless 4G LTE
As of
December 2011, Verizon Wireless has deployed its 4G LTE network in more than 190 markets across the U.S.,
covering more than 200 million people.
Verizon and SpectrumCo LLC -- a joint venture between
Comcast, Time Warner Cable and Bright House Networks -- entered into an
agreement in which Verizon Wireless will acquire 122 Advanced Wireless Services
spectrum licenses covering 259 million points of presence.
The cable
companies and Verizon Wireless also will become agents to sell one another’s
products and, eventually, the cable companies will have the option of selling
Verizon Wireless’ service on a wholesale basis. In addition, the cable
companies and Verizon Wireless have formed an innovation technology joint
venture for the development of technology to better integrate wireline and
wireless products and services. This acquisition of spectrum is an important
step toward meeting the consumer demand for additional mobile services.
FiOS
Experience is One of the Best
Verizon
conducted the first-of-its kind demonstration over its high-bandwidth
FiOS network of a full-resolution high-definition 3D transmission via a premium
TV service provider. Verizon and Panasonic -- a leader in Full HD 3D technology
-- streamed Full HD 3D, currently the highest-possible resolution of 3D video,
via Verizon’s 100 percent fiber-optic FiOS TV service.
The Federal
Communications Commission’s report on residential wireline broadband service,
“Measuring Broadband America,” confirmed that Verizon FiOS Internet delivered 114 percent of its
advertised upload and download speeds during peak periods, the highest of any
Internet service provider tested. The report also cited the company’s
impressive symmetrical FiOS Internet speeds, which exceeded promised speeds and
provided upstream speeds averaging four to six times faster than those of the
closest competitor -- an important advantage for today’s i ncreasingly
interactive Internet.
Leveraging
the strength of the Verizon FiOS network, the company also announced several
new entertainment experiences, including accessing FiOS TV on the Xbox 360
video game and entertainment system; Google Apps for Verizon; MY FiOS app; and expanded
programming for ESPN, ESPN2, ESPNU and ESPN Buzzer Beater, MTV Networks, truTV HD and BET HD. These enhancements continue to break down old
technology boundaries and free consumers to enjoy entertainment on their own
terms.
Undersea
Cables Provide Much-Needed Capacity
The
submarine cable SEA-ME-WE4 was upgraded to 40 Gbps, enabling Verizon
customers that do business in Europe, Asia-Pacific and the Middle East to take
advantage of the additional capacity, improved performance and increased
scalability.
In addition,
the $700 million Europe India Gateway cable, one of the most advanced
submarine cable systems in the world, was activated, offering additional
diversity and capacity to meet critical communications needs of multinational
companies.
International
Expansion Benefits Global Customers
Verizon
announced a new network alliance with Dialog Axiata PLC, which made
possible the expansion of Verizon’s Private IP network capabilities to Sri Lanka,
a growing global commerce centre.
The company
also completed a fiber-optic network expansion project in Singapore, greatly
increasing the company’s network coverage and doubling capacity for enterprise
customers, many of which are expanding operations in the Asia-Pacific region.
Moving to
IPv6
With the
depletion of IPv4 addresses, Verizon expanded its Internet Dedicated service in
Asia-Pacific and Europe and Private IP services globally to carry traffic using
the next-generation Internet Protocol, IPv6. As a result,
Verizon enterprise customers can exchange IPv6 traffic in multiple formats
across both the company’s global public Internet backbone and private IP
network. This transition helps Verizon’s business and government agencies
continue to experience uninterrupted Internet service.
Verizon
Network Provides Foundation for Award-Winning Solutions
With its
world-class network providing the principal foundation, Verizon received
numerous industry awards and honors recognising the strength of its networking
solutions. This year, Verizon was positioned in the Leaders quadrant by industry
analyst firm Gartner in the report, “Magic Quadrant for Global Network Service
Providers.1” And for the third consecutive year, Verizon achieved
the Metro Ethernet Forum’s highest honor of 2011 Global Service Provider of the Year for the company’s
comprehensive, international Carrier Ethernet portfolio and ongoing service
innovation.
“As we look
ahead, we’re confident we have the experience, the expertise and the strategic
vision to ensure continued leadership in the business of networks and
technology, whether it’s FiOS, cloud services, LTE or other advanced
technologies,” said Melone.

CANBERRA, Australia - 26 July 2011 – A secure Internet environment is vital for any government organisation, especially those charged with protecting national interests. So when the Australian Department of Defence needed to upgrade its communications capabilities, it chose a secure, high-speed networking solution from Verizon.

To help address this growing security threat, Verizon is enhancing its cloud-based Enterprise Identity Services to give businesses more ways to authenticate users to corporate networks while offering strong security protection.
Verizon’s next generation of Enterprise Identity Services will now support popular devices such as smartphones and tablets -- including those running on the iOS operating system as well as Android and BlackBerry devices. This process will enable users to more easily gain access to corporate networks using a two-factor authentication – a process where a dynamic code is issued to the end user that is used along with a personal identification number (PIN). In addition, Verizon’s identity services will now enable digital signing capabilities for contracts, wills and other legally binding documents.
Two-Factor Authentication Offers a High Level of Protection for Users
Using readily available mobile devices for two-factor authentication significantly strengthens the security behind each user by incorporating additional intelligence such as phone number and location to validate a user’s identity. It also eases the implementation burden for consumers and enterprises, while offering multiple ways for users to authenticate to a network in the event their “token” is lost or stolen.
Traditionally, enterprises have used a specially issued single token or key fob to gain network access, a process that requires extensive behind-the-scenes management and deployment of tokens for sometimes tens of thousands of workers, leading to a time-consuming and resource-intensive process. It also generally does not include a built-in backup plan for lost or stolen tokens.
“With the release of our newest version of Enterprise Identity Services, we are changing the game for two-factor authentication,” said Peter Tippett, Verizon vice president of industry solutions and security practices. “Our expectation is that by strengthening authentication methods, we can significantly reduce enterprise security risk and improve the security of sensitive information while easing the burden on corporate IT departments.”
Digital Signing Capabilities Enable Better Business Outcomes
The new version of Enterprise Identity Services also brings digital signing capabilities to its users. Digital signatures are used in numerous industries, most commonly in the medical and legal fields. For instance, with this service, physicians can electronically prescribe controlled substances in accordance with Drug Enforcement Administration requirements. Other enterprise uses of digital signing include signing essential corporate documents, such as W-9 forms.
In conjunction with the new digital signing capabilities, Verizon Enterprise Identity Services also offers enterprise customers a mobile application known as ID Message Center, which allows users to monitor and track their digital signature activity.
Enhanced Identity Services Platform Based on Open Standards
Verizon’s enhanced identity platform adheres to the OATH (Initiative for Open Authentication) standards, which calls for an open standards-based system that, like existing proprietary systems, requires users to provide two proofs of identity. By using an open standards-based system, enterprises can use a range of ID token devices without changing existing back-end security systems.
Delivered via the cloud, Verizon Enterprise Identity Services are aimed at helping reduce the costs and complexity traditionally associated with identity rollouts. With this solution, users do not need to purchase additional hardware or software, and if users lose a device, they can easily add a secondary device to retrieve their dynamic code for authentication.
Verizon through its Terremark subsidiary offers managed security services; governance, risk and compliance management solutions; data loss and prevention solutions; and identity management solutions, all delivered by the company’s more than 1,200 security professionals around the globe. More information is available by visiting Verizon Security Solutions. The company also provides ongoing security insight and analysis via the Verizon Security Blog.

SYDNEY, Australia, 30 June 2011 – When leading marketing services firm Epsilon wanted to further bolster the security of its global email platform, it tapped Verizon for an innovative cloud-based security solution that will help it stay a step ahead of cybercriminals.
Epsilon will be among the first enterprises to deploy a set of new Verizon security technologies, which provide a significant improvement over conventional methods of data-breach detection. The new capabilities will enable Epsilon to identify and mitigate so-called “electronic crimes in motion” in a way that has not been possible until now. (See Epsilon’s related announcement.)
To accomplish this, Epsilon tapped into Verizon’s expertise and data to establish a baseline for normal network behavior. With that baseline in place, the company now is alerted by Verizon to incidents that are not normal, and receives near real-time notification of other indicators of behaviors of an attack. With Verizon’s assistance, Epsilon now can eliminate analysing thousands of lines of log data – an extremely time-consuming and tedious task, much like looking for a needle in a haystack.
In order to offer this capability, Verizon is combining intelligence from its expansive global IP network, its database of breach statistics – one of the largest available anywhere -- and its frontline experiences with the world’s most sophisticated hackers to create a custom solution that resides within the Verizon cloud.
“Our relationship with Verizon gives us access to some of the best security tools, technologies and expertise in the world to combat cybercrime,” said Bryan Kennedy, President and CEO of Epsilon. “Epsilon has already made significant progress in enhancing security measures and remains focused on creating a more secure environment using the most sophisticated resources available to protect our clients and their customers from cyberattacks. Unfortunately, these days, data breaches are a very real, ongoing threat and that’s why partnering with the best is so critical to us.”
In addition to keeping Epsilon ahead of attacks, Verizon’s cloud-based solution, which is delivered through its Terremark subsidiary, enables Epsilon to avoid buying, maintaining and configuring hardware or software and reduces the impact on its network operations.
As part of the work that Verizon completed for Epsilon, other stronger security measures also will be deployed, including highly restrictive access to its email platform as well as enhancing user security by implementing two-factor authentication. This authentication is a security process that requires two means of identification to gain system access, adding significant additional protections to traditional strong password requirements.

Sydney, AUSTRALIA – 14 June 2011 – To
help companies meet the challenge of managing and securing their
applications on an increasing variety of mobile devices used by
employees, including their own devices, Verizon is expanding and
enhancing its managed mobility portfolio.
The new capabilities feature:• Management and security for both corporate and employee-owned iOS and Android OS (operating system)-based tablets.•
A new enterprise application portal that resides on a device and allows
mobile workers to obtain required business applications. • New anti-virus and firewall capabilities to protect intellectual assets in a mobile environment.
These capabilities
are available immediately in the U.S. and are scheduled to be introduced
in Europe next month and in Asia-Pacific and Latin America later this
year.
“An explosion of
mobile devices over the past few years has fundamentally changed the way
we work and blurred the line between our personal and professional
lives,” said Carrie Gray, enterprise mobility executive director with
Verizon. “The desire of employees to choose their device has left CIOs
and IT departments grappling with how to protect sensitive company
data. Verizon is creating an environment for enterprises to unleash
business applications, while controlling costs and securing company
assets across their mobile carrier environment.”
Management and Security for TabletsVerizon
Managed Mobility customers can now add iOS and Android OS-based tablets
to the mix of devices that can be deployed to their workforces.
Verizon delivers management and security capabilities for the tablet
devices through Afaria software from Sybase, an SAP company, providing
enterprise-to-edge security and back-office application extension
capabilities such as security policy enforcement, application delivery
and control over device management profiles.
Verizon also
introduced a new on-device portal for managing enterprise applications
that are required or recommended for specific user groups. By having
the ability to mandate or authorise applications for various groups and
individuals, companies can enable greater productivity while also
maintaining command, control and security.
Kitty Weldon,
principal analyst at Current Analysis, said, “Verizon continues to
enhance a leading portfolio of solutions that enterprise customers
should seriously consider if they are struggling with managing a range
of devices from smartphones to tablets. “The Verizon Managed
Mobility portfolio leverages the strength of Verizon’s world-class IP
and wireless networks but can be used with any carrier. The portfolio
is designed to improve an enterprise’s mobility program in four key
areas: mobile device management and security, inventory and expense
management, mobile services enablement platform, and logistics.
Enterprise Apps From the CloudSeparately,
the company announced last month an expansion of its agreement with SAP
to jointly market and sell key components of Verizon’s Managed Mobility
portfolio (Mobile Device Management and Security and Mobile Services
Enablement Platform). This will enable customers to easily access their
on-premises and cloud-based SAP applications virtually anytime,
anywhere via the Verizon business-class cloud. The updated agreement
makes Verizon the first SAP partner to provide end-to-end enterprise
cloud and mobility offerings.

Verizon Completes SAS 70 Type II Examinations of Its Data Centres Around the Globe2011-05-27T00:22:00Zverizon-completes-sas-70-type-ii-examinations-of-its-data-centres-around-the-globeVerizon Completes SAS 70 Type II Examinations of Its Data Centres Around the Globe
Sydney, AUSTRALIA, 27 May 2011 –
Verizon has successfully completed the annual SAS 70 Type II
examinations of its data centres around the globe, which support the
company’s colocation, managed hosting and application management
services. Many of these offerings underpin Verizon’s
“everything-as-a-service,” or EaaS, cloud-based delivery model.
SAS
70 is a widely recognised auditing standard performed by a certified
public accounting firm. It is conducted in accordance with the
standards set by the American Institute of Certified Public
Accountants. These reports included the examination of specific areas
such as: organisational structure, governance and administration;
physical access to facilities; logical access to systems; network
services; and operational processes and environmental safeguards. The
results of these examinations demonstrate that Verizon has the controls
and processes in place to manage and monitor its data centres and
infrastructure for enterprises around the globe.
“Verizon
provides advanced, business-class IT and hosting services to enterprise
clients spanning the globe,” said Kerry Bailey, group president –
enterprise cloud strategy and services, Verizon. “Given the nature of a
SAS 70 Type II examination, we believe our successful completion
further differentiates Verizon in the marketplace while providing
tangible proof of our commitment to delivering unsurpassed value,
performance and security.”
SAS 70 Type II examinations were recently completed for the following Verizon data centres:
• Verizon Colocation Premium Data Centres –
Fifteen of Verizon’s premium Internet data centres in North America –
including facilities in California, Georgia, New Jersey, Texas and
Virginia – completed successful examinations for the sixth consecutive
year. A facility in Irving, Texas, passed its examination for the third
year. Also successfully examined were five premium data centres in
four cities (Hong Kong, Melbourne, Singapore and Sydney); six centres in
five cities (Amsterdam, Dublin, Frankfurt, London and Milan); and two
in Canada.• Verizon Remote IP Application Management Centres –
For the sixth consecutive year, remote operations centres in San
Francisco and London, and data centres in the U.S. (California and
Texas) successfully completed the annual examination. Remote operations
centres in Germany and India were successfully examined for the second
time.• Verizon Managed Hosting Centres – This marks
the 10th consecutive year for successful examination of Verizon’s U.S.-
and U.K.-based managed hosting centres, called Smart Centres. It also
marks the third year for the company’s Smart Centres in Japan and
Germany. In addition, last month Verizon announced that it had
successfully completed the second annual SAS 70 Type II examination of
its cloud computing data centres and Computing as a Service (CaaS)
offering.

Sydney, AUSTRALIA, 25 May 2011 – Verizon
will join the Internet Society and participate in World IPv6 Day on
June 8. The event will give Verizon customers and industry leaders an
opportunity to test the new Internet addressing system, IPv6, and learn
about its future benefits.
For
24 hours, network service providers, Internet service providers,
content delivery networks, website owners, hardware and software
manufacturers and others will enable IPv6 on their main services and
test its readiness. This is the first global-scale production trial of
IPv6.
The
industry is moving from the current Internet Protocol version 4, which
has been in place since the 1980s, to Internet Protocol version 6
because the pool of IPv4 addresses is nearly depleted. The new IPv6
addressing system will expand the number of possible addresses from
approximately 4 billion with IPv4 to roughly 340 trillion trillion
trillion IPv6 addresses.
Verizon -- Early Adopter of IPv6
Verizon
is a pioneer in developing and delivering IPv6 capabilities to the
market. In the mid-1990s, Verizon developed a high-speed network called
vBNS (very high speed backbone network service) to support leading-edge
IP applications and technologies. This network, which later evolved to
vBNS+, was one of the first to carry native IPv6 traffic in 1998.
“As
a company with a deep, rich heritage in the Internet and an early
adopter of IPv6, Verizon is committed to supporting all customers who
are interested in learning about the new IPv6 protocol and the
associated benefits,” said Jean McManus, executive director of Verizon’s
Corporate Technology organisation. “Whether our customers are
residential, small-to-large business or government agencies, most will
face some kind of transition to IPv6 over the next several years, and we
want to leverage our expertise to help them make the transition as
smooth as possible.
“Many
Verizon Wireless customers are using IPv6 on the 4G LTE network, while
our Verizon enterprise customers are seeking opportunities to begin
testing their hardware and software using the new protocol. World IPv6
Day will give everyone an opportunity to participate in the testing and
learn more about the benefits and capabilities of IPv6,” McManus said.
Throughout
the 24 hours of testing, Verizon will have technical teams assigned to
identify and troubleshoot any IPv6 issues. The teams also will be
checking with others in the industry to see if any trends are
developing. In addition, ICSA Labs, an independent division of Verizon,
will participate with Verizon in World IPv6 Day and focus on security
issues.
“With
hundreds of companies and organisations from around the world
participating, World IPv6 Day is an opportunity for the Internet
industry to collaborate and test IPv6 readiness in a real production
environment,” said Leslie Daigle, Internet Society chief Internet
technology officer. “We expect the test flight to provide insight into
actual current breadth of IPv6 deployment, any issues that need
attention and to provide experience and understanding that will
accelerate IPv6 deployment.”
IPv6 -- Today and Tomorrow
Moving
to IPv6 will enable continued long-term growth for Verizon’s IP
networks and provide an opportunity for innovative wireless and wireline
IP and data services. The company also will be able to open new
frontiers for future business growth.
Verizon
currently is deploying a technology called “dual-stack” -- which allows
simultaneous support of IPv4 and IPv6 -- giving customers the option to
access key IP networks and services using either the IPv4 or IPv6
protocol. This also will give business customers flexibility to begin a
smooth transition to the new protocol while still conducting regular
daily activities.
The
most recent service enabled with the IPv6 protocol is Verizon’s
Internet Dedicated Services, which currently is available in the U.S.,
Europe and the Asia-Pacific region. The company also offers a suite of
professional consulting services to help businesses and government
agencies tailor a clear and seamless path for IPv6 adoption within their
specific operations. Other Verizon products and services in both the
consumer and enterprise business units will become IPv6-enabled over the
next few years.
(Listen to an audio podcast,
featuring Chris Kimm, vice president, Verizon network field operations
in Europe, Middle East and Asia-Pacific, to learn more about the
business opportunities associated with IPv6.)

Positioned as a Leader in Magic Quadrants for Global Network Service
Providers and Pan-European Network Service Providers
Sydney, Australia – 28 April 2011 – Gartner Inc. has positioned Verizon in the Leaders quadrant in two recently published reports: “Magic Quadrant for Global Network Service Providers”1 and “Magic Quadrant for Pan-European Network Service Providers.”2
Offerings evaluated
by Gartner included wide area network transport services, primarily
managed, such as multiprotocol label switching (MPLS); Ethernet and
Internet virtual private networks (VPNs); voice services such as SIP
Trunking; and value-added services such as cloud
(infrastructure-as-a-service), security, managed mobility,
application-fluent networking, unified communications and data centre
services.
“Our world-class
global IP network is the foundation for Verizon’s
‘everything-as-a-service’ strategy and the advanced solutions that
enable better business outcomes for our customers worldwide,” said
Farooq Muzaffar, vice president of enterprise network and communications
solutions with Verizon. “As a result, multinational corporations and
government agencies can count on Verizon to deliver advanced
capabilities such as Managed Telepresence for better visual
collaboration across the globe.”
Positioning in the Gartner Magic Quadrant is based on the ability to execute and completeness of vision.
Global Magic QuadrantGartner
examined eleven service providers for its annual global study.
According to Gartner, “Leaders have a full portfolio of voice and data
products, coupled with above-average service and support, wide global
coverage and competitive pricing. They have a strong vision that
includes adopting more information and communication technology (ICT)
capabilities, which is a strategy they articulate clearly and openly.”
Pan-European Magic QuadrantGartner
examined fifteen network service providers for its Pan-European study.
According to Gartner, “Leaders have a full portfolio of voice and data
services, including relatively new offerings in areas such as UC and
Ethernet services. These services are delivered with good quality
across a wide area of coverage at competitive prices by account teams
that are typically closer to the customer. Leaders have a strong vision
of the market and their role in it, and they will typically be able to
address a wider range of customers (in terms of size, geography and
service requirements) with their service offerings than others in this
Magic Quadrant.”

Cyber Criminals Shifting to Smaller, More Opportunistic Attacks; External Attacks, Especially Hacking, on Rise
Sydney, AUSTRALIA, 19 April 2011 –
Data loss through cyber attacks decreased sharply in 2010, but the
total number of breaches was higher than ever, according to the “2011 Verizon Data Breach Investigations Report.”
These findings continue to demonstrate that businesses and consumers
must remain vigilant in implementing and maintaining security practices.
The number of
compromised records involved in data breaches investigated by Verizon
and the U.S. Secret Service dropped from 144 million in 2009 to only 4
million in 2010, representing the lowest volume of data loss since the
report’s launch in 2008. Yet this year’s report covers approximately
760 data breaches, the largest caseload to date.
According to the
report, the seeming contradiction between the low data loss and the high
number of breaches likely stems from a significant decline in
large-scale breaches, caused by a change in tactics by cybercriminals.
They are engaging in small, opportunistic attacks rather than
large-scale, difficult attacks and are using relatively unsophisticated
methods to successfully penetrate organisations. For example, only 3
percent of breaches were considered unavoidable without extremely
difficult or expensive corrective action.
The report also
found that outsiders are responsible for 92 percent of breaches, a
significant increase from the 2010 findings. Although the percentage of
insider attacks decreased significantly over the previous year (16
percent versus 49 percent), this is largely due to the huge increase in
smaller external attacks. As a result, the total number of insider
attacks actually remained relatively constant.
Hacking (50 percent)
and malware (49 percent) were the most prominent types of attack, with
many of those attacks involving weak or stolen credentials and
passwords. For the first time, physical attacks -- such as compromising
ATMs --appeared as one of the three most common ways to steal
information, and constituted 29 percent of all cases investigated.
For the second year
in a row, the U.S. Secret Service collaborated with Verizon in preparing
the report. In addition, the National High Tech Crime Unit of the
Netherlands Policy Agency (KLPD) joined the team this year, allowing
Verizon to provide more insight into cases originating in Europe.
Approximately one-third of Verizon’s cases originated in either Europe
or the Asia-Pacific region, reflecting the global nature of data
breaches.
“Through our Data
Breach Investigations Report series, Verizon continues to provide the
industry with a first-hand look at cybercrime around the globe,” said
Peter Tippett, Verizon’s vice president of security and industry
solutions. “This year, we witnessed highly automated and prolific
external attacks, low and slow attacks, intricate internal fraud rings,
countrywide device-tampering schemes, cunning social engineering plots
and more. And yet, at the end of day, we found once again that the vast
majority of breaches can be avoided without extremely difficult,
expensive security measures.”
Tippett added: “It
is important to remember that data breaches can happen to any business
-- regardless of size or industry -- or consumer, at any place in the
world. A good offense remains the best defense. It is imperative to
implement essential security measures broadly throughout your security
infrastructure, whether that is a small home setup or an expansive
enterprise infrastructure.”
U.S. Secret Service
Assistant Director A.T. Smith said, “Americans over the past several
years have seen the significant impacts data breaches are having on our
nation’s financial infrastructure. Today cyber criminals are operating
in nearly every civilized nation in the world, exposing Americans’
personal information, either stored or transmitted, to substantial
risk.”
Smith added, “By
participating in the 2011 Verizon Data Breach Investigations Report, the
Secret Service is working closely with our private sector partners to
educate Americans about the threats of cyber criminals. With the help
of our Electronic Crimes Task Force partners, such as Verizon, we are
studying technologies and trends to prevent and mitigate attacks against
critical financial infrastructure.”The Data Breach
Investigation Report (DBIR) series now spans seven years and more than
1,700 breaches involving more than 900 million compromised records,
making it the most comprehensive study of its kind. (NOTE:

Key Findings of the 2011 Report
Data from the 2011 report shows that:
• Large-scale breaches dropped dramatically while small attacks increased.
The report notes there are several possible reasons for this trend,
including the fact that small to medium-sized businesses represent prime
attack targets for many hackers, who favor highly automated, repeatable
attacks against these more vulnerable targets, possibly because
criminals are opting to play it safe in light of recent arrests and
prosecutions of high-profile hackers.• Outsiders are responsible for most data breaches.
Ninety-two percent of data breaches were caused by external
sources. Contrary to the malicious-employee stereotype, insiders were
responsible for only 16 percent of attacks. Partner-related attacks
continued to decline, and business partners accounted for less than 1
percent of breaches.• Physical attacks are on the rise.
After doubling as a percentage of all breaches in 2009, attacks
involving physical actions doubled again in 2010, and included
manipulating common credit-card devices such as ATMs, gas pumps and
point-of-sale terminals. The data indicates that organised crime groups
are responsible for most of these card-skimming schemes.• Hacking and malware is the most popular attack method.
Malware was a factor in about half of the 2010 caseload and was
responsible for almost 80 percent of lost data. The most common kinds
of malware found in the caseload were those involving sending data to an
external entity, opening backdoors, and keylogger functionalities.• Stolen passwords and credentials are out of control.
Ineffective, weak or stolen credentials continue to wreak havoc on
enterprise security. Failure to change default credentials remains an
issue, particularly in the financial services, retail and hospitality
industries.
Recommendations for Enterprises
The 2011 report found again that the prescription for data breaches is to use simple, essential security practices such as:
• Focus on essential controls.
Many enterprises make the mistake of pursuing exceptionally high
security in certain areas while almost completely neglecting others.
Businesses are much better protected if they implement essential
controls across the entire organisation without exception.• Eliminate unnecessary data. If you do not need it, do not keep it. For data that must be kept, identify, monitor and securely store it. • Secure remote access services.
Restrict these services to specific IP addresses and networks,
minimising public access to them. Also, ensure that your enterprise is
limiting access to sensitive information within the network. •
Audit user accounts and monitor users with privileged identity. The
best approach is to trust users but monitor them through pre-employment
screening, limiting user privileges and using separation of duties.
Managers should provide direction, as well as supervise employees to
ensure they are following security policies and procedures. • Monitor and mine event logs.
Focus on the obvious issues that logs pick up, not the minutia.
Reducing the compromise-to-discovery timeframe from weeks and months to
days can pay huge dividends. • Be aware of physical security assets. Pay close attention to payment card input devices, such as ATMs and gas pumps, for tampering and manipulation.
